Wood Group receives £242m takeover offer from UAE's Sidara

Independent14-04-2025
Troubled engineering firm John Wood Group has received a fresh takeover bid from Dubai-based suitor Sidara.
Aberdeen-headquartered Wood Group said Sidara – a privately held network of engineering and design companies run from the United Arab Emirates – has now put forward a non-binding conditional offer of 35p per share to buy Wood.
The offer, which would also include a potential 450 million dollar (£342 million) cash injection into Wood, would value the company at around £242 million.
It comes almost a year after talks around a previous £1.56 billion takeover approach from Sidara collapsed.
However, the firm's share value has tumbled in the months since, particularly after recent updates highlighted potential governance failings and need for Wood to restate its accounts.
The Scottish firm's bosses said they would 'be minded to recommend' the latest takeover deal.
Wood said it has continued to assess other potential refinancing options alongside holding talks with Sidara regarding the potential takeover.
In February, Wood confirmed it had restarted takeover talks with its UAE-based rival, before extending discussions last month.
On Monday, the company said: 'The board of Wood believes that the company needs to have a more sustainable capital structure, and this requires substantial new capital in order to diversify Wood's financing sources and reduce its indebtedness over time.
' Work continues on a range of alternative refinancing options.
'However, having carefully considered the viability of these options together with its financial advisers, the board of Wood currently believes that the possible offer represents the better option for Wood's shareholders, creditors and other stakeholders.'

Cycle specialist from Newmains shortlisted for industry's top mechanic award

Connor Mooney has been at the forefront of a number of community cycling initiatives A bike repair specialist from Wishaw has been shortlisted for an industry award. ‌ Connor Mooney, who runs Cairney Cycles in Newmains, has been at the forefront of a number of community cycling initiatives in North Lanarkshire over the last few years. ‌ He launched his own bike repair business in 2020 after being told there was a three-month wait at Halfords, where he had previously worked. ‌ Connor, 32, is now looking forward to the BikeBiz finals ceremony in Birmingham later this year, where he is in the running for the Bike Mechanic of the Year Award. BikeBiz delivers trade information to the entire cycle industry and has been running for over 25 years. BikeBiz offers a Daily Newsletter, delivering breaking news direct to readers' inboxes and is the dominant site for trade readers and those with a professional interest in the cycling industry. ‌ They cover everything from product updates to marketing messages and serious industry issues. The Lanarkshire man will be joined in the finals by fellow Scottish entrants – FEL, a Scottish environmental charity, based in Forth Valley has been shortlisted for their cycle advocacy award, the winner will be decided by judges vote only, and Pedal Power in West Calder who are in for the Independent Bike Dealer of the Year Award. ‌ Connor runs cycling repair programmes, teaching young people how to repair and maintain bikes. His ambitions for a dedicated facility in the local area haven't yet been fulfilled due to a shortfall in funding required to get it off the ground, but he's hopeful that will happen in the future. ‌ He said: 'I'm self-employed and I work in partnership with Newmains Community Trust but we don't have a facility there. 'If we're training young kids then there needs to be somewhere for them to work at. 'It is difficult, getting volunteers and people to support what we're trying to do, longer term. You've got to have a passion for it. But we're getting there. ‌ 'Things are going really well, all the work we're doing with the schools is really good. I do really like what I do.' He hopes that his customers from over the years he's been in business will cast their votes for him. ‌ 'I had to put in a submission for the awards. It's exciting to be in the top six, on the shortlist. I'll be going down to Birmingham for the awards in October. It will be good for networking on the industry side of things. 'I'm trying to promote the Scottish entries in the awardsas well, a shout out to Pedal Power for being shortlisted in the Independent Bike Dealer of the Year award category, and FEL Scotland who are shortlisted for the Cycle Advocacy Award.' *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. The Cooper's Rest at 295 Easter Road, closed its doors in 2015, but now there are now plans to reopen the pub in early 2026 under new owners. The project will be a joint venture between co-owners of Newbarns, Gordon McKenzie and Emma McIntosh, and The Palmerston co-owners Lloyd Morse and James Snowdon and will offer a modern take on classic comfort dishes using the best local and seasonal produce available. James Snowdon said: 'The seed for the pub was planted way back in 2022. Through getting to know Gordon and the team at Newbarns, we realised we're all gagging for Edinburgh to have a proper pub which serves proper pub food. 'Edinburgh is a city full of great pubs, but every 'gastropub' in the city is really a restaurant - you can't go into them and sit at the bar all afternoon drinking pints. During the last few years we've discovered we have similar ideas of what we love in a pub and want to bring that to Edinburgh: exceptional food, quality drinks and a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike'. So often those friendships, and those tables, have included the brilliant people from The Palmerston so this collaboration at The Cooper's Rest just feels right. 'We can't wait to share our passion for exceptional food, great beer, and truly good company, bringing everyone together under one roof.'

Political opinion: Poynton backs Heathrow expansion: 'Now is the time to face down the blockers'

Scottish Labour MP Gregor Poynton has today backed plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport, describing the project as a key test of the Labour Government's drive to deliver growth across the UK and tackle years of 'dither and delay'. Writing in LabourList, the Livingston constituency MP says that unlocking Heathrow's potential will support Scottish exporters, including the country's world-leading whisky industry, and is part of Labour's wider strategy to get Britain building again. 'Expanding Heathrow not only represents this Government's ambition to remove barriers to new infrastructure. It will underpin Britain's international competitiveness, unlocking new trade routes, attracting investment, and enabling British businesses, including Scotland's world class scotch whisky industry, to trade around the world.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Poynton argues the project reflects a wider shift in Labour's approach to delivering for working people: 'Now is the time to face down the blockers, go further for growth, and deliver national prosperity for working people. It is why our Labour Government has greenlit and announced a multi-billion investment in Sizewell C in Suffolk, which will create 10,000 new jobs and apprenticeships, while the SNP Government has failed Scottish workers by refusing to back nuclear energy.' Gregor Poynton MP is backing the expansion of Heathrow. He adds: 'Labour is ending the cycle of dither and delay. We are getting Britain building. And we are determined to ensure people, businesses and communities across the country both see and feel the benefits of growth.' The Labour Government is expected to bring forward new legislation later this year to streamline planning and fast-track major infrastructure projects.
