
Cassava exports from Laos surge as railway boosts trade efficiency
VIENTIANE (Laotian Times): Cassava exports from Laos have grown significantly in early 2025, thanks to increased shipments along the Laos-China Railway.
In the first five months this year, the railway transported 5,750 containers of cassava (about 156,000 tonnes), marking a 43 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Laos-China Railway Company Limited.
During the same period, the railway also carried 172,410 tons of Lao agricultural goods, a 40.18 percent increase from last year.
This success came as the railway now follows a 'prioritizing approval and prioritizing transportation' policy, ensuring that goods like cassava are moved quickly, regardless of volume, making cassava the leading agricultural export being transported via the railway.
Strong Demand, But Supply Still Falls Short
Driven by strong market demand, many Lao farmers have shifted to cassava cultivation.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Linkham Douangsavanh mentioned during a March meeting in Pakse, Champassak Province, that cassava farming is expanding across the country. However, Laos is currently facing a production gap.
The country's 22 tapioca factories can only process around 1 million tonnes of cassava annually – far short of the 3.7 million tonnes needed to meet domestic demand.
In 2024, Laos produced about 7.4 million tonnes of cassava and exported over 2.4 million tonnes, earning more than USD 440 million. Major growing areas include Champasack, Vientiane, Xayaboury, Sekong, Salavan, and Bolikhamxay provinces.
Cassava was Laos' top export in January 2024, bringing in US$94 million of the total US$561 million in exports.
This rose slightly to US$95 million in February. Despite this growth, the country still faced a trade deficit of US$40 million in early 2024, largely due to reliance on imports, especially from Thailand.
Railway Strengthens Trade Links with China
Despite the challenges, the Laos-China Railway still serves as a crucial route for moving agricultural products quickly and efficiently.
The railway also offers several advantages for exporters, such as lower costs, faster delivery, and easier access to key markets in China, including Kunming, Chongqing, and Guangzhou. In response to rising demand, the railway has improved scheduling, increased the number of daily train services, and streamlined customs clearance with both Lao and Chinese authorities.
Since its launch in 2021 to March this year, the Laos-China Railway transported over 54 million tonnes of goods and carried more than 48.6 million passengers. It has also enabled time-sensitive exports, such as bananas and coffee beans, to reach international markets more efficiently. - Laotian Times

Ringgit strengthens as investor sentiment shifts towards emerging market currencies
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved sentiment towards emerging market currencies amid a weaker greenback. At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.1995/2005 versus the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2060/2130. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the US dollar's status as a default safe-haven currency is increasingly being reassessed, prompting investors to explore opportunities in regional currencies such as the ringgit. 'The current low-volatility environment is encouraging greater risk appetite, particularly for emerging market currencies. 'Notably, the ringgit, often considered a regional laggard, is breaking through key technical resistance levels despite Malaysia offering comparatively lower yields than some other emerging market peers,' he told Bernama. In our region, the Korean won, Thai baht and ringgit were among the top performers, he added. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9351/9389 from 2.9156/9206, eased versus the British pound to 5.7797/7866 from 5.7597/7693, and fell against the euro to 4.9566/9625 from 4.9290/9372 yesterday. The local note was traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.9/259.4 from 259.0/259.5 and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.45/7.46 from 7.46/7.48 previously. Auto industry poised for subdued growth
PETALING JAYA: The automotive sector appears set for a more subdued 2025, with total industry volume (TIV) projected to normalise after last year's record high. Analysts expected a mixed outlook, shaped by softening consumer sentiment, rising competition, and policy uncertainty, but supported in part by new model launches and ongoing infrastructure development. BIMB Research revised its 2025 TIV forecast downwards to 790,000 units, a 2.5% cut from its earlier estimate of 810,000 units. It noted that the adjustment was prompted by weaker-than-expected momentum in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25), attributed to soft consumer sentiment and lingering uncertainty over the timing of RON95 subsidy rationalisation. However, BIMB Research pointed to a potential sequential recovery in the second half of the year, underpinned by promotional activities, longer working days, and stable loan approval rates. Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) projected a sharper decline, expecting TIV to fall to 750,000 units in 2025, down 8.2% year-on-year, compared to the Malaysian Automotive Association's (MAA) forecast of 780,000 units. HLIB Research remarked that current order backlogs have further dwindled in 2Q25 and this is expected to continue softening in subsequent quarters as consumer sentiment weakens in tandem with a slower economic outlook as well as petrol subsidy rationalisation in the second half of 2025 (2H25). The sector's performance in 1H25 reflected these trends. According to MAA, TIV in May 2025 rose 12.4% month-on-month to 68,000 units, driven by normalised working days after the April festive holidays. However, on a year-on-year basis, sales fell 3.2%, contributing to a 5% decline in year-to-date volume to 316,700 units. This was largely attributed to easing consumer sentiment following the record 816,700 units achieved in 2024. BIMB Research said it saw structural support for the sector from 'new model launches, rising electric vehicle (EV) popularity, and infrastructure buildout'. Key launches expected in the second half included Perodua's eMO battery electric vehicle, Proton's facelifted X50 and new Saga, and Honda's refreshed Civic. Chinese brands were also stepping up, with Chery's iCAUR electric sports utility vehicles set for an Asean debut in the third quarter and TQ Wuling planning a mass-market electric vehicle (EV) below RM100,000 by year-end. BIMB Research noted: 'This strong pipeline across ICE and EV segments is expected to drive demand and refresh the competitive landscape.' Both BIMB Research and HLIB Research maintained a 'neutral' stance on the sector. BIMB Research cautioned that the sector's recovery is expected to be uneven due to elevated borrowing costs, fragile supply chains, and pricing pressure from Chinese manufacturers. Similarly, HLIB Research said earnings were likely to fall in 2025 on the back of lower sales volume and higher operating costs (aggressive sales campaigns), but partially cushioned by the strengthening of the ringgit. On the EV front, BIMB Research highlighted that 'EV adoption will continue to expand structurally, particularly as the current completely built units import tax exemption is set to expire at the end of 2025'. It forecasts EV market share could reach up to 4% by year-end, driven by broader model offerings and stronger national brand participation. Still, achieving the government's 10,000 public charger target by end-2025 remained challenging, with monthly installations needing to average 730 units. The looming revision of the open market value-based excise duty for completely knocked down vehicles in January 2026 could spur frontloaded purchases in late 2025. BIMB Research noted that any delay or adjustment in the policy could 'further sustain demand momentum in 2H25'.

Global investors double down on Chinese assets
China's resilient economy, robust growth potential and improving corporate profitability are fueling more optimism and renewed interest in Chinese assets among foreign investors. Driven by China's advancements in technology and rising confidence in its policy support to stabilize economic growth in the second half of the year, global investors are ramping up their exposure to Chinese equities and bonds. Major foreign financial institutions, including United States asset manager Franklin Templeton, investment bank Goldman Sachs and Swiss bank UBS have stepped up their allocations or expressed optimism about Chinese equities, citing favorable valuations, a peak in China-US trade tensions and optimism regarding China's artificial intelligence-led transformation. Market watchers and economists said that a combination of proactive fiscal measures, targeted industrial policies and accelerating technological innovation is reinforcing China's appeal as a destination for global capital. According to data released on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics, China's factory activity gauge improved marginally in June, as the official purchasing managers index for the manufacturing sector came in at 49.7 in June, up from 49.5 in May. Notably, the PMIs for equipment manufacturing, high-tech manufacturing and the consumer products sector came in at 51.4, 50.9 and 50.4, respectively, remaining in expansion territory for two straight months. "The story of China now is about growth," said Fang Dongming, head of China Global Markets at UBS. Foreign investors will be attracted as long as companies promise growth and profit, whether it is in technology, healthcare, new energy or new types of consumption, Fang said. Multibillion-dollar US fund manager Franklin Templeton has started edging back into Chinese stocks for the first time in years, with a group of its funds managing around $2 billion buying into Chinese stocks in recent weeks, Zehrid Osmani, head of the company's Global Long-Term Unconstrained team, told Reuters recently. The company believes that trade tensions with the US have peaked, and that China is expected to further support its technology giants, according to Osmani. Economists believe that China is well-positioned to achieve its annual growth target of around 5 percent, backed by proactive fiscal policy and moderately accommodative monetary policy. Zhang Xiaoyan, associate dean at Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said that China's top leadership may sharpen its focus on ensuring domestic economic stability and maintaining stable relationships with its trading partners, which would further boost the confidence of domestic and foreign investors in the Chinese economy. Driven by this favorable policy environment and long-term opportunities in sectors like technology, new energy and advanced manufacturing, global asset managers are reassessing their China allocations. According to Goldman Sachs, global active funds have increased their China equity allocations from 5 percent in late September to 6.4 percent by late April. The investment bank maintains an "increase" stance for Chinese stocks, citing improving corporate profitability, foreign capital inflows and long-term value in yuan-denominated assets. Fu Si, China portfolio strategist at Goldman Sachs, has forecast that the CSI 300 Index — tracking 300 heavyweight stocks in Shanghai and Shenzhen — could reach 4,600 points, about 10 percent above current levels. Similarly, the MSCI China Index, widely tracked by global investors, is expected to rise another 10 percent in the coming months, supported by its current price-to-earnings ratio of just 11.5. Goldman Sachs also identified artificial intelligence as a key growth driver. It estimated that AI proliferation could lift the overall profitability of Chinese stocks by 2.5 percent annually over the next decade. China's AI breakthroughs may attract $200 billion in fresh capital into its equity market, potentially driving stock prices up 15 to 20 percent. Zhang Di, chief macro analyst at China Galaxy Securities, highlighted that new policy-based financial instruments are likely to be introduced soon to support economic growth. "That will help support the growth of infrastructure and real estate in the second half of the year. And the focus will also be placed on supporting technological innovation, consumer-related infrastructure, and key sectors such as trade-in deals for consumer goods," he said. According to Nomura Orient International Securities, Chinese equities could outperform global peers in the second half of 2025. Factors include expectations of more supportive policy, improving domestic liquidity, and rising global interest in Asia-Pacific markets amid a weaker US dollar. Market performance so far reflects rising confidence. The Shanghai Composite Index has gained about 5.6 percent so far this year, while the CSI 300 is up over 3 percent.
