UK could get Attenborough Day bank holiday thanks to boy, eight

The UK could get a new bank holiday dedicated to broadcaster David Attenborough, thanks to an eight-year-old boy. Lyle Porretta started a petition two weeks ago for an assignment given to him by his school, calling for a national day off for David Attenborough's 100th birthday.
Lyle was tasked with researching Sir David Attenborough when he discovered that next year marked his 100th birthday. As part of his homework, Lyle set up the petition declaring a national Bank Holiday to mark the occasion.
The petition describes the holiday as a "way to honour his incredible contributions to our planet" every year. It was shared by his mum, Sophie, 36, and a few close friends and family who "loved the idea". Lyle "thought nothing of it" until 10 days after it was set up, when it had reached 20,000 signatures.

A petition that reaches 10,000 signatures is acknowledged by the Government and one that hits 100,000 is considered for debate. Mum, Sophie, a data analyst, from Newport, Wales, said: "I'm super proud of him. Lyle was keen on researching David Attenborough because he had watched all of his TV series before.
"He's always been interested in wildlife - especially oceans and sustainability - and saw David as an inspiration. I'm not sure where he got the Bank Holiday idea from - maybe he wanted an extra day off school. But to see the response and support, it seems many other people love the idea too."

Lyle began the petition on June 10, after discovering that next year, May 8, would mark Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday. He thought it was really cool and fitted in well with what he was doing in school," Sophie said.
"We watched Blue Planet together and he became really engrossed in the project."
Sophie says her son "loved" learning about all things wildlife and nature. "Growing up, he would go onto YouTube to watch a lot of weird and wonderful facts about the world," she said.

"He became just a fountain of knowledge and it was clear to see he was interested. When he approached me about the Bank Holiday, it made sense and I thought it was a great idea. So we started a petition, only sharing it amongst close friends and family."
The petition was posted on Change.org and, after a week, it already had 800 signatures. But a few days later, "out of nowhere", the petition soon boasted over 20,000 signatures.

"We have no idea where it came from," Sophie said. "But myself and Lyle are incredibly excited about the support. A lot of people have commented, sharing their thoughts about the Bank Holiday and it has all been positive. We've had people say that we should use the day for us all to do some good in celebration - like an activity.
"Hopefully, we'll get some acknowledgement and perhaps see something come from the petition. But it has certainly made Lyle more determined to carry on the work of David Attenborough. It has brought a huge smile to his face."

The Vivienne inquest confirms star was 'found by neighbour' two days after death
The Vivienne was found by a neighbour in their bathtub after being dead 'for a couple of days', an inquest has heard The RuPaul's Drag Race UK star, whose real name was James Lee Williams, died aged 32 at home in Cheshire on January 5 this year, with her family revealing two months later that she died 'from the effects of ketamine use causing a cardiac arrest'. An inquest on Monday morning heard that the star had been lying dead in the water for 'a couple of days' by the time she was found. A forensic toxicologist added that there was a 'relatively high' level of ketamine in their system, which suggested 'moderate to excessive use' of the drug before their death, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The inquest was heard by senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish at Cheshire Coroner's Court in Warrington, who said: '[Williams]did a lot for his community and he made a name for himself as a performing artist and as a drag artist as The Vivienne. 'His family say he was very bold in pursuit of his dreams and that he made a difference… It is very important to the family that James is not remembered for his use of ketamine, because drugs don't define the person he was.' The coroner added: 'On the balance of probabilities, I am satisfied that James Lee Williams' death was a misadventure. He took ketamine but he did not intend to end his own life.' The Vivienne was found dead in the bathroom of their home near Chester, the opening of the inquest was told, while police attended and confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances. During their time on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, The Vivienne opened up about their struggles with drug addiction. The star, who was the show's first ever winner in 2019, said on the programme at the time: 'It was party, drugs, but I couldn't leave the drugs at the party, it was constant for me.' They added that their addiction was a 'habit that caught on a bit too quick and a bit too hard'. The Government is seeking expert advice after illegal use of ketamine surged to record levels. The Vienne's funeral in North Wales was attended by RuPaul's Drag Race UK contestants Tia Kofi and Baga Chipz, as well as Steps star Ian 'H' Watkins, JLS singer Aston Merrygold, and Coronation Street actress Claire Sweeney. More Trending After rising to fame on the BBC show, The Vivienne performed as the Wicked Witch of the West in a UK and Ireland tour of The Wizard Of Oz musical. Last year, they reprised the role in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, and before their death they were set to return to stage in March, reprising their role as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In February, The Vivienne was honoured with an icon award at the inaugural Metro Pride Awards. TV show with two big name stars quietly cancelled after just one season
The series was created by American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy OUT TO SEA TV show with two big name stars quietly cancelled after just one season – leaving fans gutted A CRUISE ship melodrama has been quietly cancelled after just one season – despite being led by Dawson's Creek hunk, Joshua Jackson. The series, which was created by Glee and American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy, premiered in September last year in the US, before dropping on Disney+ in the UK. 6 Doctor Odyssey has been cancelled after one season Credit: Getty 6 The cast was led by Joshua Jackson as a doctor on board a cruise liner Credit: PA 6 The barmy series also starred Don Johnson Credit: Getty Doctor Odyssey, which saw Jackson play Max Bankman, the new physician on board the titular luxury cruise liner, has now unfortunately been given the push by US network, ABC. According to Variety, the cast's contracts are set to expire today, with the network not putting the show back on its schedule. As a result, it seems like the comedy-drama, which became known for its campy predicaments each week, is dead in the water. This comes despite the strong cast including Miami Vice legend Don Johnson as the ship's loveable captain, Hamilton star Phillipa Soo as Bankman's nurse practitioner, Avery Morgan, and Skins' Sean Teale as fellow nurse Tristan Silva. READ MORE DISNEY PLUS STARLET TO SUPERSTAR Meteoric rise of Olivia Rodrigo from Disney star to Glasto headliner Doctor Odyssey followed the various medical issues Bankman and his team had to deal with while on the ship. The bizarre catastrophes ranged from one passenger contracting iodine poisoning after overdoing it on the all-you-can-eat shrimp, to a plastic-surgery loving woman whose nose fell off after snorting cocaine. As all this unfolds, the close quarters of the staff gives way to romance, prompting a review in The Telegraph comparing it to 'a cross between ER and The Love Boat'. It's 'bonkers' plot lines also include Max declaring himself 'the first person in the US to contract Covid' which sparked a new zest for life when he survived. Throughout the show's initial run, Doctor Odyssey was also filled with megastars appearing in cameo roles – including Shania Twain, Angela Bassett, Kelsea Ballerini and John Stamos. However, it seems the jam-packed cast wasn't enough to keep the show afloat. At the time of writing, none of the main cast have commented on the show's cancellation. But fans have flocked to X (formerly Twitter) begging their "weird" and "nonsense" series to be saved. "They really cancelled Doctor Odyssey and I feel personally attacked. Yeah, it was chaotic," wrote one. "Yeah, it didn't always make sense. But it had heart and in the end, I weirdly loved every minute of it. I'm gonna miss this messy, unserious emotional gem." "I don't know how they'd do it but they need to get Doctor Odyssey on a new channel somehow. I don't care if they have to have a major budget cut and it has to be filmed on a dinghy. Just bring it back to me," said another. While a third wrote: "I'm mourning the loss of #DoctorOdyssey today. I was hoping for Season 2 where the group goes through the Bermuda Triangle, goes back in time and sees dinosaurs." 6 Despite being "nonsense" fans grew attached to the show Credit: Getty 6 The series became known for its whacky catastrophes on board Credit: Getty
