Jannik Sinner beats defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to win Wimbledon men's title

Toronto Star4 days ago
LONDON (AP) — Jannik Sinner insisted early on at Wimbledon that he put an excruciating loss to Carlos Alcaraz in their epic French Open final behind him. Sinner was sure that one defeat wouldn't haunt him, wouldn't prevent a quick recalibration and certainly wouldn't mean a thing at the All England Club.
Sure was right about all of that.

'The former national Alpine skier and ski cross athlete was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip.' The federation said Groenvold was 'quickly taken to hospital and received treatment for the injuries he sustained in the lightning strike' and then died Tuesday night. Groenvold was a member of Norway's Alpine skiing team before he moved into freestyle and ski cross. He had one podium finish as a World Cup Alpine skier, finishing third in a downhill in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. He also won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships, and the overall ski cross cup in 2007. After his career ended, he became a national team coach and a TV commentator. 'Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities,' federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said, adding that his passing creates 'a huge void.'

Smith's four-year deal highlights the increase in spending in women's soccer with transfer records regularly broken. Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a record $788,000 last year, and that figure was quickly exceeded by Girma's move to Chelsea. As recently as 2020, the most expensive women's player was Denmark's Pernille Harder, who joined Chelsea from Wolfsburg for $355,000. England's Keira Walsh left Manchester City for Barcelona in 2022 for a deal worth $513,000, and Chelsea broke the record again in 2024 when signing Mayra Ramirez from Levante for $542,000. She joined Sporting Clube in Portugal in 2023 and scored 16 goals in 28 appearances in her debut season. She moved to Liverpool last year and scored nine times in 25 games. Smith is also Canada's youngest international after making her debut at 15 in 2019. 'Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal,' head coach Renee Slegers said. 'We've been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age.' Arsenal is a 15-time English champion and won the Champions League for the second time in its history last season. Despite Chelsea being the dominant force in women's soccer in England, Arsenal is the only English team to win the Champions League. 'It's my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I'm excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal,' Smith said. West Indies' Andre Russell retiring from internationals after Australia T20s

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — West Indies allrounder Andre Russell is retiring from international cricket after the two Twenty20s against Australia at his Sabina Park home ground. The games are on Sunday and Tuesday. Russell has played 84 T20s since 2011 and was a World Cup champion in 2012 and 2016. He's passed up a chance to play at a sixth T20 World Cup in eight months in India. Cricket West Indies said the 37-year-old Russell 'remains a high-impact player and was selected on merit.' 'To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life,' Russell said. 'When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.' Daren Sammy was Russell's captain at both World Cup triumphs and has become his national coach. 'Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,' Sammy said. 'Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.' Russell began his international career at age 22 with his sole test in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He played his 56th and last one-day international at the 2019 World Cup. He was a controversial selection as he'd played only one ODI since 2015 following a doping ban and knee injury. But he became the fastest player, in terms of balls played, to 1,000 ODI runs. Since then he's become a T20 great, sought by franchises all over the world. This month he was playing for Los Angeles in Major League Cricket. Russell will be replaced by Matthew Forde for the three T20s in St. Kitts and Nevis against Australia. ___ AP cricket:
