Stats Dept introducing agricultural production index to aid national food security
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the index, to be pushed quarterly, would offer a more comprehensive view of agricultural output, supporting evidence-based policymaking in a sector central to both livelihoods and economic stability.
The index is being developed in collaboration with several government agencies and will mirror existing statistical frameworks used for the manufacturing, electricity and services sectors.
"This data will help identify which areas are experiencing increases in agricultural output and the information can be shared across agencies for planning and policy-making purposes," he said on Tuesday (June 17) after launching the 2024 Penang Interim Agriculture Census Report, officiated by Penang agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol here.
Until now, national agricultural statistics have focused primarily on palm oil and padi production, which he described as 'not comprehensive.' The new index, he said, would offer more structured and detailed coverage of the broader agricultural sector.
Preliminary findings from the 2024 Agriculture Census indicate that the sector recorded sales of RM161bil in 2023, employing 1.7 million people. These figures underscore the industry's potential if backed by strategic policies and innovation.
In Penang alone, agricultural sales reached RM3.5bil, despite the state's small size. Individual farmers accounted for 93.1% of agricultural holdings, with organisations making up the remaining 6.9%.
The census also highlighted the active role played by senior citizens, with more than half of Malaysians aged 60 and above still engaged in agriculture.
Mohd Uzir noted that the presence of older farmers in the field remains strong, while youth involvement presents further opportunities to enhance sector productivity. – Bernama

Initially, operations for the maritime patrol aircraft are expected to be based out of Batu Berendam Airport in Melaka, he noted. Mohamed Khaled also said Malaysia has proposed that the acquisitions be carried out through government-to-government (G2G) agreements. "This approach will help us secure better pricing and asset guarantees directly from the Italian Government," he explained. The Defence Ministry has also recommended exploring new areas of collaboration between the two countries in the defence sector, including artificial intelligence (AI) and underwater security command centres. Anwar arrived here on Tuesday (July 1) for a maiden official visit at the invitation of his Italian counterpart, Georgia Meloni. This is part of Anwar's three-nation visits to Italy, France and Brazil, which form part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. Ringgit ends higher on regional trade optimism
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved regional sentiment following a new United States-Vietnam trade deal, said SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes. At 6 pm, the local note rose to 4.2195/2255 versus the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2245/2305. Innes said the agreement to impose a reduced 20 per cent tariff on Vietnamese exports, down from a previously threatened 46 per cent has lifted risk appetite and supported regional currencies. "The markets see this as a positive sign for global trade recovery, which helped boost the ringgit," he told Bernama. Innes also said that the weaker-than-expected US ADP jobs data, with only 33,000 jobs added in June, reinforced expectations of two US rate cuts this year, pressuring the greenback. He noted, however, that market focus might shift on tonight's non-farm payrolls report, with consensus at 106,000. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It shrunk against the euro to 4.9756/9827 from 4.9748/9818, and depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9333/9376 from 2.9316/9360. However, it appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7621/7703 from 5.7859/7941 yesterday. The local note traded mixed against its ASEAN counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3146/3196 from 3.3167/3217, and rose against the Thai baht to 13.0211/0457 from 13.0233/0482. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/261.0 from 259.9/260.5, and weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.50/7.51 from 7.49/7.51 previously.

Automotive TVET course offers job opportunities for low-income youths

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: While most of his peers were still waiting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results or planning to further their studies at higher learning institutions, Muhammad Hafuza Aris made a different decision. Four years ago, after completing his SPM, he chose to join a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programme in the automotive field offered by Carsome Academy, a skills-training institution, in hopes of quickly securing a permanent job and supporting his family. 'I've always been interested in the automotive field, so when I found out there was a course that only takes nine months to complete and only requires a minimum PT3 qualification, I applied right away. 'My goal was to start working as soon as possible to support and take care of my family, but first I needed to gain knowledge,' he told Bernama. The 22-year-old's inclination towards hands-on, skills-based work was nurtured from a young age, partly influenced by his father who operated a small vehicle-repair workshop at home. Hafuza believes that mastering technical skills is essential for becoming self-reliant as it not only opens up employment opportunities but also serves as a foundation for sustaining oneself, especially during uncertain economic times. Now working as a vehicle inspector at a used-car buying and selling platform, he sees technical training as a way to build discipline, strong character, and a sense of responsibility and competitiveness. His friend Muhammad Alif Najmi Amran, who also underwent automotive skills training and now works as a vehicle inspector, shares similar sentiments. He sees skills training as an alternative platform that opens up opportunities for youths interested in technical fields, noting that while undergoing such courses, trainees are given an allowance as well as assured job placements upon completion. His current job involves comprehensive inspections of used cars that customers wish to sell, including assessing the exterior and interior conditions, identifying signs of accidents, and conducting test drives to ensure the transmission system and major components are functioning properly. 'During our training programme, we were taught how to inspect the gearbox, lighting system and body structure, and to identify damages. All of this is important to determine the true market value of a car,' Alif said. The 23-year-old, who is interested in a career in sales consultancy in the future, shared that he'd previously worked in the food and beverage industry, where his income had been just enough to get by. 'But after entering the automotive field, I can now support myself and help my family. At the very least, I now see a clear direction in life,' he said. Strengthening the industry Meanwhile, Carsome Academy chief executive officer Teoh Jiun Ee said the establishment of the TVET training centre is part of the company's effort to strengthen the automotive industry and provide certified skills training for youths, in collaboration with the skills development department. 'We found that many workers in the field have skills but lack official recognition. This prompted us to provide a pathway for skills recognition and certification for workers and trainees,' he said. The initiative also aims to offer better job opportunities to youths who are less inclined towards academic fields. The Malaysian Skills Certificate Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance programme is targeted at youths from low-income groups, with the academy collaborating with organisations such as Yayasan Hasanah, Yayasan MBI, and Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor to provide scholarships and training allowances.
