Wings overcome early goalie injury, roll past Utah
Alex DeBrincat had a goal and an assist and Elmer Soderblom, Marco Kasper, Austin Watson and Tyler Motte also scored for the Red Wings (33-31-6, 72 points), who won for just the third time in 12 games.
Detroit, which got two assists from Simon Edvinsson, is three points out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Petr Mrazek made a save on Dylan Guenther 1:38 into the game, was injured and went to the locker room. That was the only shot Mrazek faced. He was replaced by Alex Lyon, who stopped 16 shots.
Guenther got the goal for the Utah Hockey Club (32-28-11, 75 points), who had won three of their last four and are six points out of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Karel Vejmelka made nine saves.
Kasper was credited with the marker that gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead 1:34 into the second period. His attempted pass from along the goal line went in off the leg of Utah's Lawson Crouse. DeBrincat got an assist for his 500th career point.
Watson gave Detroit a two-goal lead 9:51 into the third period when his mid-air tip of a shot deflected in a high arch and then down over the shoulder of Vejmelka and into the net. It was Watson's first goal since Dec. 31, 2023.
DeBrincat added an empty-net goal, his team-leading 33rd of the season, with 2:54 left and Motte scored with 1:28 remaining.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first.
Guenther opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:46 into the game on a one-time shot from the inside part of the left circle. It was his team-leading 26th of the season.
But Soderblom tied it 1:22 later. In his return after missing a game with a lower-body injury, Soderblom capitalized on a one-timer from the inside edge of the right circle on a 2-on-1 rush off a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko.

Charlie Morton to make Tigers debut in series finale vs. Phillies
August 3 - The Detroit Tigers acquired Charlie Morton just before the trade deadline expired. They'll waste little time to put him into their rotation. Morton will make his Tigers debut when he starts the finale of a three-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Sunday night. Morton was a key member of the Houston rotation when the Astros won the 2017 World Series with A.J. Hinch as their manager. They're back together again with the American League Central leaders. "His presence alone will be really good for this team," Hinch said. "He's steady. He never gets too high or too low. He's done it, seen it, experienced it. He's gotten some of the most important outs and he's also had to fight and claw his way back into being a factor this year." The 41-year-old right-hander appeared to have nothing left to give earlier this season. He had an 0-7 record with a 9.38 ERA in his first nine appearances with Baltimore. After being banished to the bullpen for a short time, Morton (7-8, 5.42 ERA) returned to the Orioles rotation and turned his season around. Over his last 11 starts, he's 7-1 with a 3.88 ERA. "He's going to really help our rotation," Tigers general manager Scott Harris said. "We like Charlie because he's battle-tested. He's been up to 97 mph with his fastball and he's got a swing-and-miss curveball. He's pitched for A.J. before and he really endorsed him." In his last outing with the Orioles, he gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings against Toronto. "He's been on quite a good run," Harris said. "His top-line performance (numbers) are a little misleading. Since the end of April, he's been on a really good run, sub-4.00 ERA and throwing a ton of strikes with a ton of swing and miss." He's 5-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 20 career starts against the Phillies. Philadelphia starter Cristopher Sanchez (9-3, 2.55 ERA) had his streak of nine quality starts snapped in his last outing. The left-hander gave up four runs -- tying his season high -- and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to the Chicago White Sox on Monday. In his previous start, Sanchez notched a complete-game victory while striking out 12 and throwing 106 pitches in a 4-1 win over Boston on July 22. "Didn't know whether it was the travel, or coming off a complete game, the humidity, but the fifth, sixth and seventh, he turned it back on, and he had the finish back to his pitches," manager Rob Thomson said. Sanchez hasn't previously faced Detroit in his career. The teams have split the first two games of the series. Philadelphia rallied for a 5-4 win on Friday and Detroit held on for a 7-5 victory on Saturday. Both games were closed out by the teams' new closers. Jhoan Duran, acquired from Minnesota, got the save for the Phillies in the series opener. Kyle Finnegan recorded the last four outs for the Tigers in their bounce-back win. -Field Level Media

Javier Baez drives in 4, as Tigers defeat Phillies
August 2 - Tarik Skubal struck out 10 in seven innings and Detroit's offense backed him with four homers as the Tigers topped host Philadelphia, 7-5, on Saturday. Skubal (11-3) held the Phillies scoreless in the first six innings before giving up three runs in the seventh. Javier Baez led the offense with a two-run homer and two-run triple. Kyle Finnegan, making his Detroit debut after being acquired from Washington, got the last four outs for his 21st save this season. Colt Keith, Kerry Carpenter and Gleyber Torres supplied solo homers as Detroit won for the fifth time in six games. Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper blasted two-run homers for the Phillies. Zach Wheeler (9-5) allowed four runs (three earned) and nine hits in six-plus innings with 10 strikeouts. In the third inning, Keith jumped on a first pitch fastball and drove it over the right field wall to give Detroit the lead. With two out, Carpenter smashed a Wheeler fastball over the right-center field wall for his 18th homer to make it 2-0. The Phillies' Weston Wilton ripped a one-out double off the right-center field wall in the sixth. After a groundout, left fielder Riley Greene made a sliding catch against Kyle Schwarber to keep Skubal's shutout alive. Dillon Dingler reached on an error by third baseman Otto Kemp leading off the seventh. Baez then slammed a sinker over the left-center field wall to end Wheeler's day and give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. He was replaced by Tanner Banks, who gave up Torres' long ball over the center field wall before the inning was over. Philadelphia responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Harper led off with a single and scored on J.T. Realmuto's double. Castellanos then jumped on a Skubal changeup and drove it over the center field wall for his 15th homer. The Tigers pushed their lead to 7-3 in the eighth. Zach McKinstry and Dingler drew two-out walks against Matt Strahm and scored on Baez's triple. The Phillies got those runs back on Harper's two-run shot off of Will Vest. --Field Level Media
