Ultimate Table Tennis season six kicks off from May 31 with double header
Earlier in the evening, Season 2 winners Dabang Delhi TTC will face Sreeja Akula-led Jaipur Patriots in the ceremonial opener, setting the tone for a high-voltage season, where eight franchises will compete across 23 ties, according to a UTT release.
U Mumba TT, led by World No. 14 Bernadette Szocs and rising Indian star Yashaswini Ghorpade, begin their season with a mouth-watering Maharashtra Derby on June 1 against PBG Pune Jaguars, spearheaded by Spanish ace Alvaro Robles.
Debutants Kolkata ThunderBlades, featuring World Youth No. 5 Ankur Bhattacharjee and Olympians Quadri Aruna and Adriana Diaz, open their campaign on June 2 against Season 3 winners Chennai Lions, headlined by China's Fan Siqi, the most expensive pick at this year's auction, and former World Youth No. 1 (U-17) Payas Jain.
Staged under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Vita Dani and Niraj Bajaj, UTT has rapidly become one of the most coveted global sports properties in table tennis.
UTT drew 20 million viewers in 2024--a 1.3x rise from the previous season. The opener between Dempo Goa Challengers and Jaipur Patriots drew 1.33 million, while the U Mumba TT vs Ahmedabad SG Pipers derby scaled to 1.83 million on TV. Across the season, the league averaged over a million viewers per match.
Season 6 picks up where it left off, with key clashes lined up, including the Western Derby between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on June 2. A rematch of last year's final between Dabang Delhi and Dempo Goa Challengers-which pits Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Diya Chitale against Harmeet Desai and Singapore's Zeng Jian-is set for June 4. The semifinals will be played on June 13 and 14, leading to the Grand Finale.
Each team will play five ties across the group stage, while each tie will consist of five matches--two men's singles, two women's singles, and one mixed doubles. After the league stage, the top four teams on the points table will progress to the knockout stage, with the semi-finals featuring Team No. 1 vs Team No. 4 and Team No. 2 vs Team No. 3. The ties will begin at 7:30 PM, with seven double-headers scheduled, where the first tie will start at 5:00 PM (17:00), followed by the second at 7:30 PM (19:30).

The teenager, who plays for Dandenong Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier Cricket Competition, spends most of the Australian summer in cricket grounds, honing his skills and taking wickets. During the off-season, he frequently visits Chennai for training and upskilling himself. 'I think from 11 or 12, I have been training here. I first went to the Cricket Drome academy, and I worked with Sridharan Sriram, who used to work with the Australian team. Afterwards, I also worked with a few spin coaches like Siva Prakasam,' he shares.

From flight to freefall: How TN based Archana Thiagarajan led India to glory
Until the 1960s, scientists believed that diving beyond 38 metres (around 125 feet), could kill a human. The pressure, they thought, would crush the lungs. But in 1952, an Italian diver Raimondo Bucher took a 39-metre-plunge and came back up, proving them wrong. Since then, freedivers have been going deeper. Some use ropes, some fins, some add weights, and one discipline has crossed the 200-metre mark. But the risk is real. Seawater is 840 times denser than air, and as you sink, the pressure builds quickly. The deeper you go, the heavier it gets. And yet, freedivers return for tranquility and slow fall. 'What draws me to freediving, is the calmness and stillness. It's just you and your body,' says Tamil Nadu-based Archana Thiagarajan. 'I usually close my eyes. It's like being in space, weightless, free-falling, neutrally buoyant.' A former squadron leader in the Indian Air Force, Archana, never expected to find a space in this world. But earlier this year, she made history. At the 34th AIDA Freediving World Championship in Wakayama, Japan (held from 28 June to 2 July, 2025), Archana became the first Indian woman to represent the country. In her debut appearance, she set four new national records across all pool disciplines (DYNB: 137m; DYN: 125m; DNF: 94m; STA: 4:22 Sec), bringing her total to ten (all in pool disciplines). A sabbatical in Indonesia in April 2024 with her husband (also ex-IAF), had sparked a casual interest in freediving after initially considering scuba. They had both retired from the IAF on 5 January, 2024 and planned a year of travel. Now, that spark has taken her to the world stage.

Swimming: Srihari sets another record, qualifies for two semis
Ace swimmer Srihari Nataraj clocked 49.46 to break Veerdhawal Khade's 17-year-old best Indian time for 100m freestyle and qualify for the semifinals at the World University Games in Berlin on Sunday (July 20, 2025). Srihari reduced Khade's record, set in the Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune, by 0.01 second in the heats. The 24-year-old also made it to the 50m backstroke semifinals with a time of 25.59 in the heats. The best Indian time (25.11) in this event also belongs to Srihari, who achieved it at the Uzbekistan Open championships in 2021.
