Bihar EOU busts international cyber fraud gang, kingpin held

PATNA: The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police on Monday busted a cyber fraud gang with alleged foreign links. Kingpin Harshit Kumar and five others from Supaul and Vaishali districts were arrested, and multiple mobile phones, SIM cards, and electronic devices used in the scam were seized.
The operation led by a DSP rank officer began on Saturday morning and concluded late on Sunday. ADG, EOU, Naiyyar Hasnain Khan said that the gang led by Harshit was in touch with fraudsters operating from several countries, including Vietnam, China, Germany and Cambodia and duped people.
The 21-year-old gang's leader had set up altogether eight mobile phone set boxes purportedly procured from China and Vietnam in his house located at Gauspur in Supaul district. He has set up a parallel telephone exchange with the help of these set boxes. 'The VOIP calls were easily converted into local calls by fraudsters to contact gullible people in Indian states,' ADG, EOU, said.
The cyber scam centres located in countries such as Thailand and Cambodia converted VOIP calls into local calls to contact the victims in India through various social media platforms. Preliminary investigation revealed that more than 10,000 fraud calls were made per day with the help of these set boxes.
The parallel telephone exchange has duped country's telecommunication ministry of huge exchequer. 'We are trying to estimate the loss of revenue to the Government of India by a fake telephone exchange,' ADG, EOU, said.

Indian man arrested for stealing Rs 3.5 lakh worth of makeup, bags from Singapore Airport

A 38-year-old Indian man was arrested for allegedly stealing several items worth around Rs 3.5 lakh from multiple stores at Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport and the airport's transit area, The Strait Times reported. According to a press release issued by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on July 23, the man is believed to have targeted a total of 14 retail outlets, stealing items such as bags, perfumes, and cosmetics before leaving the country. The incident came to light on May 29 after a retail supervisor at one of the shops in Jewel Changi Airport noticed a bag missing while checking the stock. The police were notified at approximately 4.28 pm that day. The report also said that upon reviewing CCTV footage, authorities spotted the suspect taking the item and exiting the shop without making any payment. 'The complainant said that a bag had gone missing from inside the shop located at Jewel Changi Airport,' the police stated. Authorities identified the man, but by then, he had already left Singapore. However, his return to the country on June 1 allowed authorities to take action. Officers from the Airport Police Division nabbed him during transit and searched his luggage. Several items believed to have been stolen were recovered, the report added. Further investigations revealed that the accused had stolen items from 13 other stores within the airport complex, amounting to thousands of dollars in losses. The report also stated that the man is set to be formally charged in court on July 25 with theft and fraudulent possession of property. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both. Recently, the US Embassy in India issued a warning to visa holders and applicants, following the incident where an Indian woman was caught shoplifting items worth approximately Rs 1.1 lakh at a Target store in Illinois. According to reports, the woman was on vacation in the US. She was seen pleading with police officers to let her go, saying she would pay for the items.

Babbar Khalsa-linked man held in Indore for grenade attack on Punjab police station

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a 22-year-old man allegedly linked to the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) for his involvement in the grenade attack on a police station in Punjab's Gurdaspur district earlier this year. The accused, identified as Akashdeep alias Bazz from Amritsar, was apprehended on Tuesday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where he was working as a crane operator at a construction site. Police said he was involved in the grenade attack at Quila Lal Singh police station in Gurdaspur on April 7. Following the attack, a social media post claiming responsibility and issuing further threats to Delhi was circulated by individuals affiliated with BKI—Happy Pachiya, Mannu Agwan, and Gopi Nawanshahria. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said Akashdeep was in contact with a handler from Punjab operating BKI activities from abroad. He reportedly received instructions through social media for planning and executing terror activities. Police added that Akashdeep was also engaged in the illegal supply of arms to criminals in Delhi. After receiving intelligence about his movements, the Special Cell tracked him across Gujarat before locating him in Madhya Pradesh. The arrest was made under a new initiative of the Delhi Police's Special Cell known as the 'Operation Cell.' This dedicated unit has been formed to monitor Khalistani terror activities and other emerging threats, with a focus on social media and the dark web. It will operate 24x7 to track digital activity linked to banned organisations, Indian gangsters operating abroad, and cross-border radical networks. Officials said the increasing use of digital platforms by terror outfits for recruitment, radicalisation, and communication has necessitated the creation of a specialised monitoring wing. Akashdeep has been brought to Delhi for further interrogation, said police, adding that the efforts are underway to trace his associates, handlers, and the network aiding his movement and activities across state borders.

‘He was so embarrassed': Dublin woman gives blanket to stripped Indian Amazon employee after mob attack

Fresh details have emerged in the shocking attack on an Indian man in Dublin. Jennifer Murray, the local woman who rescued the Indian, said he was attacked by a group of teenagers who stripped him of his clothes and left him for dead in Tallaght, a suburb of Dublin in Ireland. An Indian man was assaulted by a group of Irish teenagers in Dublin (Representational image via Shutterstock) In an emotional video shared on Facebook, Murray said this is not an isolated incident. The gang has targeted at least four other Indians in the recent past. 'Your teenagers are going around stabbing innocent men in the face,' she said. Falsely accused of pedophilia Murray said she was driving around 6pm on Saturday when she saw the man 'completely covered in blood'. 'Please help me,' the man requested Murray. Murray brought him over to where her car was parked and called the ambulance and the police. Murray said that the teenagers who attacked the Indian man concocted a fake story about him acting inappropriately to justify their attack. They accused him of being a pedophile who was found with his pants down in a playground. The Irish woman rejected this version of events in no uncertain terms. She repeatedly emphasised that the Indian man was 'very nice', polite and gentle. She accused the Irish teenagers of cooking up a fake story about him being a pedophile so the community would turn a blind eye to their racially-motivated attack. 'I knew that man had not done that. I knew straight away,' said Jennifer Murray, wondering how a gang could stab a man in broad daylight. Murray said that the man told her he had been hired by Amazon and had arrived in Ireland only a week ago. He holds a degree from one of the top colleges in India and has a wife and an 11-month-old baby at home. (Disclaimer: Video contains strong language. Viewer discretion advised) Stripped naked, attacked from behind Murray broke down in tears as she spoke about the shocking attack on the unnamed Indian man. She said he was walking down to pray at a temple when he was attacked from behind by 'these absolute scumbags'. She also said he was miles away from a playground, negating the narrative about him being found with his pants down in a playground. 'They punched him in the head with what I can only say was blades between their knuckles. He went down, completely covered in blood. He's got massive injuries. The blood did not stop flowing from his nose the whole hour I sat with him,' she revealed. 'They stripped him of his clothes. They took his trousers off him. They took his underwear. They took his shoes. They took his phone. They took his bank cards. They took everything. They left him for dead… they very, very easily could have killed him with what they did,' she said. Murray broke down repeatedly as she recalled how the man kept thanking her repeatedly. 'He was so embarrassed,' she said, as he had been stripped. She gave him a blanket out of her car and waited for him for over an hour for the ambulance to arrive.
