'Very aware': Maguire dismisses Broncos concern as family detail comes to light
Broncos coach Michael Maguire has opened up on how his players and staff spent their week on the bye, and dismissed concerns the team might have lost some momentum because of the break. Brisbane have won five in a row to put themselves in fifth place on the NRL ladder heading into Round 21. Sitting four points behind the Warriors in fourth, the Broncos will be keen to continue their winning ways to try and secure a top-four finish to the regular season. They face the Parramatta Eels at home on Friday night, before another game at Suncorp against the lowly Rabbitohs. Speaking on SEN radio this week, Maguire revealed he sent his players and staff away to be with family during their bye last week. While some coaches like to continue training so they don't lose any momentum, Maguire saw an opportunity to give his team some much-needed down-time, and gave them a full five-day break to be with their loved ones. When asked what the Broncos did on their break, Maguire said: "With family really. I'm usually pretty full-on with the players but when I get a chance I always love to get away with the family and just spend time at home. Dropping the kids at school and getting to their sporting events and things like that, so it was actually a nice little break." The Broncos coach admitted he's aware that some teams come back from the bye a bit sluggish, but dismissed concerns his team will fall into that trap. "You get into a bit of a routine when you're going week-to-week, and we've been fortunate to have that over the last month," he said. "But now we've got to make sure we take what we got out of that [and continue it]. I am aware that when you have a bit of a break you can break your rhythm, so we've got to jump straight into what we're doing on Friday. We've got to be very aware that Parramatta can start strongly." Michael Maguire finally getting to use first-choice spine With Reece Walsh, Ezra Mam, Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt all fit and firing, Maguire is finally getting the chance to utilise his first-choice spine. Walsh and Hunt have been out at different times with injuries, while Mam was suspended for the first nine games of the year. But all four are finally available, and it's an exciting time for Broncos fans. "I think they're going to keep evolving over this next month," Maguire said. "Hunty probably hasn't played as much in the No.9 jersey, but his smarts about what he sees at 9 is going to be real helping hand. And that will release Ezra and Reecey. I've got two senior leaders and two X-factors there. "We can play a controlled style but those boys can also express themselves when there's a bit of space. It is exciting to have that spine back. It was what I was expecting to have when I first started, but we've managed to get there now. Each game we play I think we'll get better and better." RELATED: Panthers fans divided after Ivan Cleary forced to axe grand final hero Teammate responds amid calls for NRL stars to cop ban from Origin Maguire provided an insight into the type of person Walsh is behind closed doors. "He brings a lot of energy to every day," he said. "He's a livewire and he loves his footy, and that rubs off on everyone. When we add Reece and Ezra and the support they provide, we're just a different team. The day-to-day training, he's a real competitor and I love coaching those types of players." Broncos players feeling fresh after bye The Broncos' bye also provided their State of Origin players to freshen up and get their bodies right for the run home. Payne Haas has been battling some niggles, although Pat Carrigan didn't carry the same workload he usually does for the Maroons, spending more time on the bench than in previous years. "I've just learned over the past couple of years that it's an opportunity to let yourself refresh," Carrigan told AAP this week. "I was a bit guilty (in 2024) of just trying to double down and dive back into things. Madge (Maguire) gave us five or six days off, and that was really good to bring me back level-headed and back to my focus here. I feel really good."

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi jokes that he expects to play Bill Belichick and North Carolina in ACC title game
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi is setting high expectations for Bill Belichick's North Carolina tenure. Narduzzi complimented Belichick's career on Wednesday at ACC media days and joked that he expected to face the Tar Heels for a spot in the College Football Playoff at the end of the season. 'I'll be shocked if he doesn't have success,' Narduzzi said of Belichick. 'I don't have a crystal ball, I'm no genius over here. He's a heck of a football coach. But it takes players and it takes coaches. It takes a program together, it takes everyone moving in the same direction … I expect them to be in the [ACC] championship game against Pitt this year.' Belichick was hired ahead of the 2025 season after North Carolina parted ways with Mack Brown. It's the first college coaching job for the former New England Patriots coach after he had spent the entirety of his career in the NFL. The Tar Heels went 6-7 in 2024 after losing their bowl game and haven't won an ACC title since 1980. Pitt, meanwhile, won the 2021 ACC title with Kenny Pickett at quarterback. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Neither team is a favorite to win the conference in 2025. Pitt started the season 7-0 — and beat North Carolina 34-24 in that stretch — but lost its last five games of the season before losing the GameAbove Sports Bowl in six overtimes to Toledo. UNC's odds to make the ACC title game are +1000 at BetMGM while Pitt's are +1600. Clemson is -175 to appear in the title game, while Miami is favored to be the Tigers' opponent at +125. The Belichick question in Narduzzi's media scrum wasn't the only one Narduzzi fielded on Wednesday. He was even asked about Belichick at the end of his main news conference and had a question back for the reporter who made the Belichick inquiry. "Is this a Pitt question, or is this a North Carolina question? Bill Belichick, one of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game," Narduzzi said. "Won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. I've enjoyed conversations with him, whether it be at Amelia Island or in Zoom calls with ACC coaches. He's a tremendous football coach, really smart. "Again, he adds a lot of flavor and excitement to the ACC. When you look at Bill Belichick coming to the Atlantic Coast Conference, it just tells you how attractive our conference is."

Jimmie Johnson says he could run more NASCAR Cup races in 2026
Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who has run only two Cup races this season, says 'there's a chance that I run more races next year.' One of those races, he hopes, will be the inaugural street race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego next June. That event has special meaning for Johnson, who grew up in El Cajon, California, about 15 miles east of San Diego. NASCAR to race in San Diego in 2026: Here's what to know The NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series will race on a military base in 2026. Dustin Long, While San Diego would be a special place for Johnson to run his final Cup race next Father's Day (June 21), the co-owner of Legacy Motor Club said he still wants to race more in NASCAR's premier series even as he's set to turn 50 in September. 'I want to keep going,' Johnson said in response to a question from NBC Sports about his future plans. 'I want to stay in a car. I think it's good for us. 'We're hopeful to have a third charter. Need to start building a team. There's a chance that I run more races next year if we have a third charter on the docket and have a sponsor to bring along, team members to groom, a crew chief to get reps, a driver to get reps. There's a lot of scenarios that are in play. I'm hopeful I can keep going. 'I certainly don't want to feed you guys a line of BS here. There is also a scenario where (making San Diego his final Cup start) would make sense. We've put zero effort into the idea yet at this point. I have more years in me. I want to keep going.' San Diego fills one spot on 2026 NASCAR Cup schedule but questions remain NASCAR executive says the sport hears the debate from fans and competitors about the number of road course events on the schedule. Dustin Long, Legacy Motor Club hopes to have a third charter next year but that could depend on the court system. Legacy Motor Club has filed a lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing, alleging that Rick Ware Racing is backing out of an agreement signed in March to sell Legacy Motor Club a charter. Rick Ware Racing claims the wrong charter number is listed in the agreement. A trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 26, 2026. Legacy Motor Club filed a lawsuit July 16 against former Spire Motorsports co-owner T.J. Puchyr, who told The Associated Press in June that he had entered into an agreement to purchase Rick Ware Racing. Legacy Motor Club accuses Puchyr of tortious interference after he helped broker the deal between Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing. Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek are Legacy Motor Club's full-time drivers.
