UT set to start maintenance & repair of cycle tracks in Chandigarh
2
Chandigarh: The UT engineering department is set to undertake the maintenance and repair of the cycle tracks in various sectors, including Dakshin Marg, Sectors 19, 27, 28, 45, 46, and various other roads.
The department will spend around Rs 10 lakh on the work. Another Rs 21 lakh will be spent on the recarpeting of cycle tracks in Sector 26.
The condition of the tracks has worsened over the years. In some places, bollards have been placed on the cycle tracks. Cyclists have to stop, pick up their cycles over these bollards, and then move ahead. In many places, there are trees right in the middle of the tracks, and in other places, there are manholes.
Many stretches of the cycle tracks are in darkness during the night as streetlights are not working. At night, many areas of the cycle track are not used because they are not lit effectively. In such places, either there are no streetlights or they aren't working. This also raises security and safety concerns.
There are more than 200 km of dedicated cycle tracks in the city, and the engineering department is adding more cycle tracks to more areas of the city. The department is undertaking work to construct dedicated cycle tracks on Purv Marg along the railway line side from junction 53 to Sector 47 light point, Kailbari light point Sector 31C side, and along V-3 roads in Sector 48-D, 49-C, 49-D, and Sector 50-C to the UT boundary.

Ancient Hindu idols unearthed in J&K's Anantnag district
Image Credit: PTI NEW DELHI: Ancient Hindu idols and Shivlings have been discovered during excavation work for a spring restoration project in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, officials confirmed on Saturday. According to news agency PTI, the relics were unearthed at the Karkoot Nag spring in Aishmuqam's Salia area, about 16 kilometres from the district headquarters. The site is historically significant to the Kashmiri Pandit community and is believed to be associated with the Karkoota dynasty, which ruled Kashmir between 625 and 855 CE. The artefacts were found by labourers working on a revival project led by the Public Works Department. Following the discovery, officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums visited the site and took possession of the recovered items. "The idols and sculptures will be sent to the SPS Museum in Srinagar, where research scholars and department experts will study them to determine their age and historical context," a department official said. Speaking to reporters, a local Kashmiri Pandit said, 'There has been an influence of the Karkoota dynasty in this region, so a temple may have existed here or the idols may have been preserved here deliberately.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? 'We want these artefacts to be preserved. We have heard that a temple once stood here. A new temple should be built, and the Shivlings reinstalled there,' he added. The department has not confirmed whether the site will be developed for religious or heritage tourism, but conservation efforts are likely to follow once the study is complete. Recycling trash for a good cause
DHARWAD: Do not waste your waste. That's the everyday motto of Veerappa H Arakeri in Hubballi and Dharwad. Veerappa collects plastic and e- waste from households and sells to recyclers and the money thus collected is spent on charity works. Veerappa is not your typical rubbish collector. He is an engineering graduate. For a time he even held a well-paid 9-to-5 job. But then he junked it all to serve society. Since 2014, Veerappa has been doing the rounds on his bike to make the twin cities plastic-free. More than the financial succor he offers, Veerappa is keen on creating awareness about the importance of recycling among residents. Veerappa says he was earning Rs 4 lakh a year but later wanted to do something different and meaningful. He is part of a joint family and has never faced financial crunch to manage his daily expenses. He donates the money he gets from selling waste to orphanages, relief funds of Prime Minister and Chief Minister, goshalas, the underprivileged and many others. 'I do not get large amounts by selling plastic waste but whatever I get is being donated. I take my bike and roam around. Usually I give a bag to people willing to hand over waste and once the bag is filled I collect it and give them another bag. I have a son and wife who support me in this work. In the last 10 years I might have donated nearly Rs 2 lakh. I want to spread awareness and bring more people to charity work. I do all charity work under the banner of Akka Foundation,' he says. One of his friends said except for meeting the petrol expenses Veerappa donates the rest of the money he raises by selling waste. The Akka Foundation also donates books, pencils and clothes to children. It is not a blind, random gesture. Veerappa does due diligence before identifying the individuals or institutions he supports. 'In slum areas he distributes used clothes, text books, shoes and other items fit for reuse. The children in slums are happy to see him since he often carries gifts for them', he adds.
