Earlier, a powerful earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale, struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's far east on Wednesday. As per the USGS, the quake, which struck at a depth 19.3 km (12 miles), was epicentered 25 km (80 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula along the coast of Avacha Bay.
The USGS had earlier categorized it as a 8.0 magnitude tremor but later revised the seismic reading to magnitude 8.8.
