Homes Under the Hammer's Martin Roberts says 'I failed on every level'

Daily Mirror23-06-2025
Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has been working to transform a rural Welsh pub into a tourist destination, but the building is still in dire need of renovation
Homes Under the Hammer star Martin Roberts openly confessed to hitting rock bottom in his latest endeavour, as he struggles with the mammoth task of converting a down-at-heel Welsh pub into a holiday hotspot. Currently faced with the enormous challenge of refurbishing the rural Hendrewen Hotel in Rhondda Valley, the premises are far from ready, with parts of the building close to collapse.
Once confident that a two-year timeline and a £500,000 budget would suffice to revive the eight-bedroom inn, 61 year old Roberts now finds himself dealing with major delays two years into the renovation. Speaking to The Sun, he shared: "I'm still smiling but, oh my word, what a challenge it's been."

He candidly admitted: "I'll be honest, it's the first commercial property I've ever done. There have been lots of residential houses and flats, but commercial properties have a lot more complications."
Roberts estimates that the project is about "60%" complete and remains optimistic that the work will "come together really quickly" as he approaches the home stretch. His goal is to have the doors open by next Easter at the absolute latest, subject to overcoming hurdles such as planning permission related to local flood risks.
The TV personality recounted the numerous obstacles he's encountered, saying there were "lots of hoops to jump through", and initially finding the building plagued by slanted walls, collapsing windows, and bats roosting in a leaking roof, reports the Express.
In a surprising twist, Roberts revealed he hadn't even shared the news with his wife Kirsty about purchasing the dilapidated pub while in Wales recuperating from a heart operation.
The local watering hole is set to become the star of a ten-part ITV documentary series next year, cheekily titled Oops!

I Bought A Pub. Taking inspiration from Jeremy Clarkson, plans are afoot to dangle a Rolls-Royce upside down from the dining room ceiling, mirroring the chrome tractor feature at Jeremy's establishment, The Farmer's Dog.
Guests will have the chance to stay in one of the venue's eight uniquely themed bedrooms, each named after different TV shows and designed with an "individual feel".
There's also a new bar and restaurant in the works for the property.

The pub aims to bring about 30 jobs to the area, including a teaching kitchen where celebrity chefs will impart their knowledge to the youth.
And for those with musical aspirations, there will be a stage area to showcase their talents.

Excitement builds as Oasis to play first gig in almost 16 years in Cardiff

Excitement is building in Cardiff as Oasis kickstart their long-awaited worldwide reunion tour in Wales' capital - their first concert in almost 16 years. Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will perform together for the first time since their dramatic split in 2009, when they appear at the Welsh capital's Principality Stadium. The brothers announced the Oasis Live '25 tour last August, starting with two dates in Cardiff on Friday and Saturday, before heading across the UK and Ireland. Doors are expected to open at 5pm, with Cast and the Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft in support. Former members of the group are expected to make a return, with Andy Bell on bass, and Gem Archer and Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs on guitars. Noel was spotted getting off the train in Cardiff on Tuesday, while a drone display spelling out the band's name could be seen over the stadium on Wednesday. Fans across the city have also heard what they believe to be rehearsals in the Principality throughout the week. The reunion announcement came 15 years after Noel quit the Britpop band, saying he 'simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,' following a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. While fans have been pleading for the group to reunite since they disbanded, website issues and controversial dynamic pricing brought outrage, with many failing to secure a spot. After tickets for the UK and Ireland shows went on sale last year, some standard tickets appeared to have jumped from £148 to £355. The controversy prompted the Government and the UK's competition watchdog to pledge to look at the use of dynamic pricing. Following Cardiff, Oasis will visit Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin's Croke Park throughout July, August and September. The group will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America. A movie, produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, is being made in conjunction with the reunion tour. Formed in Manchester in 1991, the rock band was led by lead guitarist Noel and his brother, lead vocalist Liam, during their 18 years together. Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993, rising to fame with the release of their debut chart-topping album Definitely Maybe on August 29 1994. They had hits with songs including Don't Look Back in Anger, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Live Forever. Dig Out Your Soul, the band's last studio album, was released in 2008, just months before the Paris row.

Oasis fans say Liam and Noel feud isn't over as they spot sad detail in photo

Oasis fans can't wait to watch Liam and Noel Gallagher reunite on stage in Cardiff for the first time in 16 years tonight, but some reckon the bitter rivalry remains Oasis fans reckon Liam and Noel Gallagher are far from best pals despite reuniting for their epic comeback gig tonight. The brothers from Manchester, who have a long history of feuding, are just hours away from performing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium and fans, who have been camping outside, can't wait. However, ahead of the gig, one eagled-eyed ticket holder shared a snap of Oasis' rehearsal room, suggesting that guitarist Bonehead would be separating Liam and Noel while on stage for the tour. Captioning the black and white shot in which Bonehead's guitar can be seen in the middle of the photo, they wrote: "Photo of the Oasis rehearsal room. Bonehead will be between Liam and Noel during the tour." Speculating on all of the band's positions, they continued: "Gem [Archer] - Andy [Bell] - Liam (Joey [Waronker] behind) - Bonehead - Noel." ‌ ‌ Responding to the prediction, one fan said they felt uncomfortable by the arrangement as they shared: "That's going to feel off to me, it needs to be everyone on one side of Liam, and nobody but Noel on the other side. My OCD is going to go mental if Bonehead stands between them." Meanwhile, another said: "That will look really odd - he has never stood there before." Liam and Noel have been involved in a bitter war of words for years, which reached boiling point on August 28, 2009, when lead guitarist and songwriter, Noel, quit the band ahead of a gig in Paris. As Oasis prepared to go onstage at the Rock En Seine festival, a row broke out, with Liam wielding Noel's guitar around 'like an axe'. "He nearly took my face off with it," Noel claimed, adding after that the show was cancelled, along with the rest of the tour. The explosive row also saw Liam chuck a plum at his older brother, which burst against the dressing room wall, shortly before they were due on stage. "Part of me wishes it did end like that - 'plum throws plum'," Noel told Radio X. He continued: "He storms out of the dressing room and on the way out, he picked up a plum and threw it across the dressing room and it smashes against the wall." Liam then began "swinging" a guitar, which Noel says was a "real unnecessary violent act". ‌ Despite their differences, the Gallaghers have agreed to reunite and look like they'll be delivering a stellar gig tonight in the Welsh capital much to the delight of their legion of loyal fans. Exactly where they'll be placed on stage remains to be seen, but their fans are bound to roll with it as they get set for the spectacular show, which kicks off the global tour. Ahead of the big gig, some fans have heard the pair rehearsing their setlist - with one on Reddit revealing that they'll be playing 24 songs. They claimed the setlist kicks off with an intro of F****n' in the Bushes then Hello, Acquiesce, Morning Glory followed by Some Might Say. Cigarettes & Alcohol is next as Fade Away, Supersonic, Roll With It, Bring It On Down follows. Meanwhile, it is believed Noel will take on Talk Tonight, Half the World Away and Little By Little.

Three ITV daytime shows parachuted in to fill void left by axed Loose Women and Lorraine episodes as bosses scramble to film new series

Three ITV daytime shows have parachuted in to fill a void left by axed Loose Women and Lorraine episodes. Back in May many were left shocked when it was revealed that the two popular daytime programmes had been pulled for half the year. But fans will be happy to know that there are three popular shows that have been confirmed to return to our screens. The Chase, Deal Or No Deal and Tipping Point have have even been given a 'major boost' on the schedule and according to The Sun, new episodes will be filming later this year. Tipping Point - hosted by Ben Shepard, 50 - hit our screens in 2012 and has aired 1,597 regular episodes over 14 series. But over the past year, no new instalments had been filmed, which worried some fans, however it was confirmed that ITV had a number of unaired episodes were being played out instead. Deal Or No Deal has been on our screens since 2005, and the show aired on Channel 4 until 2016. When the show returned in 2023, it started airing on ITV instead and Stephen Mulhern took over the presenting role from Noel Edmonds. Fans will be happy to know that more episodes will be filmed later this year, but another series will be released before that. And The Chase, hosted by Bradley Walsh, 65, has had 18 successful regular series since it first launched in 2009. Bradley, and the Chasers Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan and Darragh Ennis are set to film later this year. Lorraine and Loose Women have been axed for half the year and Lorraine's runtime has been slashed by 30 minutes, as ITV Daytime bosses announced huge cuts today with job losses in excess of 220. Host Lorraine Kelly faced the brunt of the cuts with Good Morning Britain now taking her 9-10am slot for 22 weeks of the year. For the remaining 30 weeks of the year, Lorraine will present five days a week, meaning her Friday stand-in presenters Ranvir Singh and Christine Lampard are no longer needed for the show. Lorraine's show has also been slashed in half, now running for just 30 minutes from 9:30am to 10am. ITV sources told MailOnline that they have decided to cut resources on their daytime schedule so that the network can invest in more drama programmes. One said: 'There is a need to cost save but also so that the right money can go to the right shows and with everything getting more expensive these things have to be looked at. Loose Women will also now air for just 30 weeks of the year The source added: 'Christine and Ranvir remain part of the ITV daytime family.' This Morning, whose presenters include Alison Hammond, Ben Shepherd, and Cat Deeley, remains untouched. It was also announced that ITV Studios will no longer make Good Morning Britain but instead it will be made by ITN - the organisation which makes ITV News. That means that there could be a merger between the staff working on GMB - which is hosted by Susanna Reid - and the channel's news bulletins. Meanwhile, ITV said that it is unlikely any on-screen talent will be axed. An ITV source insisted that the changes have not be influenced by any of the show's performances, saying: 'We recognise daytime is a very popular genre and these changes and efficiencies are about preserving the future of the genre, whilst also funding additional investment in dramas like Mr Bates vs The Post Office and in coverage of the biggest sporting events like next year's football World Cup as well as the UK's biggest reality and entertainment shows. 'This has nothing to do with under performance, the bosses are very pleased with all four shows. This Morning and GMB have escaped unscathed, their social media footprint is booming.' Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, explained the changes: 'Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. 'These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever.' Lygo added: 'I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams, and we will work with ITV Studios and ITN as they manage these changes to produce the shows differently from next year, and support them through this transition. 'Daytime has been a core element of ITV's schedule for over 40 years and these changes will set ITV up to continue to bring viewers award winning news, views and discussion as we enter our eighth decade.'
