Thrilling draw: Malaysia, Pakistan battle to 3-3 stalemate in Nations Cup opener
Pakistan were quick to take charge of the match as Ahmad Nadeem gave them the lead just six minutes into the match, thanks to an assist by Sufyan Khan.
Three minutes later, the Green Shirts doubled the pain for Malaysia as Abdul Rehman converted a penalty corner.
But Malaysia were not going to let things slip past them that easily as veteran player Fitri Saari closed the gap for Malaysia in the 49th minute.
The final quarter saw more action from Sarjit Singh's men as Syed Mohd Syafiq Syed Cholan equalised for the hosts in the 52nd minute from a penalty corner.
Pakistan then fired one back to take the lead again through Ashraf Waheed Rana in the 54th minute.
Cue Syafiq once again came to Malaysia's rescue and levelled things up again in the 56th minute.
Meanwhile, in the other Group B match, New Zealand defeated Japan 2-1.
In Group A, France won 6-5 against South Korea, while South Africa and Wales drew 4-4 in their opening match.
Malaysia will take on New Zealand next on Monday (June 16).

Josue admits he was surprised by Malaysia's withdrawal
KUALA LUMPUR: National player Paulo Josue has admitted he was surprised by Malaysia's withdrawal from the Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup. The 36-year-old Brazil-born Josue felt the Nations Cup would have provided valuable experience for Malaysia's players as the tournament features strong teams like Iran and Uzbekistan. KL City midfielder Josue has earned 26 caps and scored nine goals since his Malaysia debut in March 2023. Knee issue continues to haunt Shah as worlds loom on the horizon
KUALA LUMPUR: National track cyclist Shah Firdaus Sahrom has yet to fully recover from a stubborn knee tendonitis issue which has been bothering him since early February. National track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri said Shah has made good progress after undergoing daily physiotherapy sessions over the past few months but has yet to fully overcome the injury. "It is taking a long time (to heal) and it is incredibly frustrating for Shah. He is, however, doing his best to remain positive and continues to work on it," said Harnizam when contacted today (July 30). "He is working on strengthening his (right) knee by doing specific exercises under the supervision of our physiotherapist. "I would say he is about 90 per cent recovered now. The issue now is that he feels discomfort and a loss of power when his leg and knee are bent between 77 to 90 degrees. "He is fine if he is pedalling in a seated position but it affects him when he is doing out-of-seat efforts during sprints, which is not ideal for a rider like him. "I expect him to be able to compete at the World Championships later this year, the challenge is to get him in the best condition possible." Shah is expected to compete alongside younger brother Ridwan or Fadhil Zonis for Malaysia in the keirin at the World Championships in Santiago, Chile on Oct 22-26. Harnizam confirmed that Shah will not be fielded at the Thailand Track Cup next month (Aug 25) as he does not want to risk Shah aggravating the injury or, even worse, crashing. Shah, 29, had picked up the injury during a strength training session in early February. He, however, fought through the pain to race at the UCI Nations Cup in Konya, Turkiye a month later and won the keirin gold. It was his first gold individual medal in a major international competition.

Arif Aiman ready for more responsibilities after Spanish stint
KUALA LUMPUR: Winger Arif Aiman Hanapi is ready to step up on all fronts this season, both for club and country, following a transformative pre-season stint in Spain. Appointed as Puma Football's latest ambassador today, the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) star said the training camp in Europe had given him renewed belief. "The (M-League) season is about to start, and I've prepared intensely. I spent pre-season in Spain and gained a lot of experience and confidence from it," said the 22-year-old. "I learned a lot facing strong and competitive European teams. Preparation is always the key to my success, not just for every season, but for every moment ahead." Arif, who captained the JDT team in Spain, said the armband had only inspired him to grow further. "It was an honour, and I'm proud of the trust given to me. I didn't see it as pressure, but as an opportunity to showcase myself as a player and as a captain. I've learned a lot from it." On the presence of naturalised heritage players in the national team, Arif said: "The arrival of new players and heritage players helps me to become a better player. These are guys who've played in top leagues like Turkey and Portugal, and I'm learning from them." He also addressed the growing debate among fans over Harimau Malaya's recent withdrawal from the Central Asian Football Association Nations Cup in favour of friendlies against Singapore and Palestine on Sept 4 and 8 respectively. "As a player, I don't focus on the outside noise. I'm just concentrating on what's ahead of me now," he said.
