Prasarana announces appointment of new group chairman, CEO
Mohd Nasir was Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Bhd (PUNB) chief executive officer (CEO) until June 1, 2011. In 2018, he was appointed group chairman of CIMB Holdings Bhd.
Prasarana, in a statement, also announced the appointment of its group chief operating officer (Operations), Amir Hamdan, as acting president and group CEO effective July 15, replacing Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, whose term expires on July 14.
Amir joined Prasarana in 2019 as deputy chief financial officer before being appointed as the CEO of Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd in 2022.
During his tenure at Rapid Rail, he has driven various improvement initiatives that have contributed to increasing operational efficiency and reliability of rail services.
Amir holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Lincoln University of New Zealand and a Master's in Islamic Finance Practice from INCEIF University. He is also a certified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Prasarana also expressed its appreciation and gratitude to Jamaludin and Mohd Azharuddin for their services and leadership throughout their tenure with the company.
Their leadership has led to the success of Prasarana recording the highest daily rail and bus passenger count as Dec 31, 2024, which is 1.5 million, reducing the number of rail service disruptions from 255 in 2022 to 71 disruptions in 2024, as well as the introduction of several new initiatives such as the Rapid On-Demand (ROD) van service. - Bernama

Strategic approach needed for sustainable fiscal savings
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is currently focusing on identifying tax mechanisms that can be implemented and are compatible with the country's existing economic framework. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said any move to introduce new taxes must ensure that the revenue collected is sufficient, justified, and beneficial to the people. "The government is only considering tax options that can be implemented and are suited to our economic system. "If we look at measures such as the luxury tax and capital gains tax, these represent major policy shifts," he said on the Keluar Sekejap podcast hosted by Shahril Hamdan and Khairy Jamaluddin. "What we need to assess is whether the revenue collected from such taxes is adequate to meet our needs and whether it's worth the effort. That's the balancing act we are managing. "The key is that when we move forward, we do so prudently, minimise the impact, and evaluate the outcomes," he added. On RON95 fuel subsidies, Amir confirmed that a targeted subsidy mechanism is scheduled to be implemented before the end of the year, with the Cabinet still finalising the income threshold for eligibility. He said the government is working to determine a fair cut-off point to ensure that subsidies reach those who genuinely need them. "If we are going to define who qualifies, the challenge lies in deciding where to draw that line. "Any new mechanism must not be more burdensome than the current system and should be designed to minimise leakages. "Otherwise, people will find ways to bypass it. We believe using the MyKad is currently the most viable option. I believe most Malaysians are honest and will do the right thing," he said. As for the government's fiscal goals related to subsidies, Amir stressed that decisions should not be based solely on arbitrary savings targets. "We can't just say we want to save RM5 billion or RM3 billion and then make cuts arbitrarily. That's not a compassionate approach," he said. Instead, he said the government needs a sustainable model, similar to the targeted diesel subsidy, to ensure aid reaches the intended groups while protecting them from future price shocks.

Impractical to revive GST now, says Amir Hamzah

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan says the government has ruled out reintroducing the goods and services tax (GST) for now, calling it 'impracticable' under current economic conditions. He said established and new businesses have 'moved on' to alternative tax structures since the GST was zero-rated in 2018. As a result, a full reinstatement of the GST would likely take at least two years, he added. Speaking as a guest on the Keluar Sekejap podcast, Amir said the government has never disputed the merits of the GST system. However, he said Putrajaya was of the view that it cannot be reintroduced as it 'not suitable for now'. 'The GST is broad-based. It will affect everyone,' he said. 'Companies like the GST because of the input-output tax mechanism: what they charge, they can claim back. But, in the end, the burden falls on the people.' Amir said the government was of the view that tax reform must be pragmatic and compatible with Malaysia's current economic structure. 'When we impose a tax, we need to ask: is the revenue we get worth the effort?' he added. Podcast co-host Khairy Jamaluddin said Amir's explanation was acceptable, noting that the minister was not making the case that the sales and service tax (SST) was inherently better that the GST regime. Last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya would consider bringing back the tax scheme when the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more. For now, the government has expanded the SST to cover more items, with a 5% to 10% tax on non-essential goods and added service tax on rent, construction, financial services, and private healthcare and education. On the distribution of government aid, Amir drew comparisons between the unity government's Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid schemes and the 1Malaysia People's Aid or BR1M during Najib Razak's time. Prasarana launches digital platform to help vendors implement ESG practices
PETALING JAYA: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has launched digital platform Vendor ESG Hub to help nearly 5,000 registered vendors, including SMEs, enhance their capacity to implement sustainable business practices. Prasarana Group president and CEO Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said the initiative was a strategic move to strengthen the vendor ecosystem in Prasarana's supply chain to ensure compliance with global ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles. 'The Vendor ESG Hub portal offers a range of practical resources, guides and digital tools specifically designed to help vendors understand, assess and progressively implement ESG practices. 'The digital platform is divided into four main segments – 'Assess, Inspire, Learn and Do' – which are designed to enhance vendors' capabilities and readiness to meet the demands of more sustainable future business practices,' he said at a press conference after the launch of the platform here today. The platform was launched in conjunction with the Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development Week 2025, underscoring Prasarana's continued commitment to supporting ESG initiatives. Mohd Azharuddin said the implementation of the platform would be carried out in phases, with the first phase involving 30 to 50 companies identified to take part in the ESG-related education and awareness programmes. He said that in addition to over 3,000 local SME vendors, international vendors from Europe and Asia, including China and Japan, were also involved. 'We will work with them and learn how to upgrade and this will apply to all vendors, whether international or local,' he said. Mohd Azharuddin also said that one of the long-term goals of the programme was to reduce carbon emissions in vendor operations. 'One of the key priorities now is reducing carbon emissions. ESG is a broad concept, but one of the actions we can take is to educate vendors on how to reduce emissions in their daily operations,' he added. – Bernama
