First-place Phillies ready to resume season vs. Angels
Fresh off an MVP performance in the All-Star Game, Kyle Schwarber leads the Philadelphia Phillies into Friday's series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
Schwarber went 0-for-2 with a walk through nine innings in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic. However, the Philadelphia slugger saved his best work for the 'swing-off,' a 3-on-3 home run derby used for the first time to determine a winner instead of calling it a tie.
'There's a lot of guys who are way more deserving of this award,' Schwarber said after homering on all three of his derby swings. 'I'm just happy that we get a win with the National League and it's going to come home with us to Philly.'
The Phillies were up and down heading into the All-Star break, finishing the first half with a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres to improve to 55-41 and maintain first place in the NL East. Cristopher Sanchez, who logged 7 1/3 sharp innings in that contest, was one of several Philadelphia starters who shined during the season's first half.
Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 4.14 ERA) was sensational through his first 11 starts, but the results have been shaky at times over his last eight outings. That said, his final start of the first half was a sizzling effort against the San Francisco Giants -- three hits allowed over seven scoreless innings in a 13-0 romp.
'He did exactly what he told me was going to do,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said of the 27-year-old left-hander. 'Attack the hitters, fill up the strike zone, trust his stuff and just let it happen. That's what he did.'
Luzardo has faced the Angels seven times (three starts) while posting a 1-1 record with a 2.53 ERA.
Los Angeles has yet to announce a starter for Friday's contest. One of the top options could be All-Star left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-6, 3.11), who opted not to pitch in Tuesday's exhibition game.
Kikuchi's last outing came Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 10-5 victory.
Kikuchi has made one career start against Philadelphia -- back in August 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. He gave up one run and four hits in six innings that day en route to a 2-1 victory.
The Angels took two of three from the Diamondbacks to end the first half of the season. They sit at 47-49, just four games back of the third and final wild-card spot in the American League. As far as the Los Angeles players are concerned, the time to win is now.
'In years past, it was good to see positive results, even if that didn't result in wins,' Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe said. 'But to be honest with you, we're over it. Like we know what we're capable of doing and we need to win games.'
This is the Angels' first trip to Philadelphia since 2023. The teams met in Anaheim last season with the Phillies taking two of three in a series where every game was decided by two runs or fewer.

Chiefs' Chris Jones voted top interior defensive lineman by AP panel
The one main constant on Kansas City's defense during a run of seven straight appearances in the AFC title game has been defensive tackle Chris Jones. While Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have carried the offense, Jones has done the same on the defensive end for the Chiefs with his knack of creating pressure at key moments playing a crucial role in Kansas City's success. That helped Jones win the honor of being voted the top interior defensive lineman in the league by The Associated Press. A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at interior defensive line, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points. Jones got seven of the eight first-place votes to go with one second to win the voting easily. Two other players were on all eight ballots with Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants getting the other first-place vote to come in second and Philadelphia's Jalen Carter finishing third. Pittsburgh's Cam Heyward finished fourth and Quinnen Williams of the Jets came in fifth. CHRIS JONES, Kansas City Chiefs Jones' sack total of five last season was his lowest since his rookie season in 2016 but he still earned his third straight All-Pro selection after finishing second among all interior defensive linemen with 74 pressures in the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus. Jones' 72 sacks over the past seven seasons rank tied for fifth overall in that span and tied with Aaron Donald for the most among interior linemen. 2. DEXTER LAWRENCE, New York Giants While most of the other players who got votes at interior defensive line are '3 technique' tackles who line up on the outside shoulder of the guards, Lawrence mostly plays nose tackle directly over the center. Those players are typically run stoppers since it is easier to double-team them in the pass game but Lawrence thrives at both. He had a career-high nine sacks in 12 games last season and his 103 pressures when lined up as a nose tackle the past three seasons are 80 more than any other player, according to PFF. 3. JALEN CARTER, Philadelphia Eagles Carter was the anchor of Philadelphia's Super Bowl-winning defense last season. He has 10 1/2 sacks and 102 total pressures in the regular season in his first two years, according to PFF, and helps free up the edge rushers for the Eagles because he warrants so many double teams. 4. CAM HEYWARD, Pittsburgh Steelers Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Heyward has shown no signs of aging as heads into this season at age 36. He had eight sacks last season when he earned his fourth first-team All-Pro selection. Damian Lillard returns to Trail Blazers on 3-year deal

Article content Lillard signed a three-year deal worth $42 million to return to the Portland Trail Blazers, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been officially announced. Article content Article content Lillard, 35, was the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Trail Blazers and spent 11 seasons with Portland before he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks just before the 2023-24 season. Article content Lillard tore his left Achilles tendon during a first-round NBA playoff series against the Indiana Pacers and required surgery, meaning he could miss the entire 2025-26 season. Aliyah Boston added 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Indiana (10-10) before fouling out, while Sophie Cunningham came off the bench for 16 points and 10 boards. Caitlin Clark contributed 12 points and nine assists. Jordin Canada starred in defeat for Atlanta (12-8), scoring a career-high 30 points and dishing out eight assists. Rhyne Howard added 14 points despite missing most of the second quarter with a knee injury and Brittney Griner chipped in 10 to go along with eight rebounds. The Fever blew it open in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dream 30-17 and leading by as many as 20 points in the last minute.
