I have anxiety, I struggle sleeping at night, going over the same accident, or similar events like that," he told the PA news agency.
'Inadequate instruction'
The family flew to Sal, Cape Verde, on 1 March 2023 for a week-long holiday costing £4,166.72.In court documents filed by law firm Stewarts, which is representing Mr Holliday, Sarah Prager KC said that on arrival, the family found their luggage had been lost, although it was later found.They then found their rooms "smelled very strongly of sewage", and replacement rooms were offered.Ms Prager said TUI representatives offered a free excursion to compensate and recommended quad biking, claiming this was "suitable for total beginners".She said the accident was caused by the route being "unsuitable for beginners", Mr Holliday and his family being given "wholly inadequate instructions", and the quad bike being "defective".
A spokesperson for TUI said: "We are sorry that Mr Holliday was injured during his holiday to Cape Verde."As this is now a legal matter, we are unable to comment any further at this time."

TUI announces extreme day trips to Lapland from major UK airport
Summer isn't over yet, but TUI is already looking ahead to the festive season with the launch of its 'ultimate Christmas day trip'. Announced as part of the 2026 winter schedule, the travel company's 'Search for Santa' package is back, and this year, travellers from Cardiff Airport can get in on the fun too. The 'extreme' day trip — which costs £750pp and runs from 11 airports across the UK and Ireland — offers families the chance to jet off to Lapland, meet Santa Claus, and be back in their bed by evening. Travellers land in Kittila in Finland around midday before heading to the Snow Village, with its ice hotel, which features igloo-like rooms and an icebar. Then its time to hop on a sleigh ride, led, of course, by Rudolph. There'll be husky rides, snowmobiling, and storytelling ahead of the main event: meeting Santa and his elves in the snowy woodland. Flights depart from London Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, East Midlands, Cardiff, Glasgow, Birmingham, Stansted and Dublin. A route from Bournemouth Airport to Lapland will also resume in Winter 2026 after it was suspended in 2019. It's a whirlwind winter adventure, but these day trips aren't without criticism. While a quick jaunt might be a chance to squeeze in a holiday without knocking your annual leave balance, there are environmental consequences to consider. A Facebook group called 'Extreme Day Trips', which boasts over 240,000 members, is a hub for advice on flights and itineraries, and whether making it there and back in 24 hours is even possible. Some UK travellers have made it as far as Dubai and New York in under 48 hours, while others have dashed to Cairo to see the pyramids in less than a day. Many more have taken advantage of Britain's proximity to Europe for a quick getaway. But Matt Phillis, travel expert at Polarsteps, previously told Metro that th trend is not without risk. 'A flight generates 100 times more carbon dioxide per hour compared to a train or bus ride,' he said. 'But short-haul flights, covering less than 1000 miles, contribute disproportionately more to carbon emissions. This is because take-off and landing are so energy-intensive.' For a more sustainable approach, Matt suggested taking the train or bus instead of flying. 'Taking the train from London to Paris instead of flying cuts your CO2 emissions by a whopping 90%,' he said. 'You'd be surprised by how easy it is to do a day trip to Brussels or Amsterdam if you catch an early Eurostar out of London. If you are flying, however, he recommends doing your research and using a sustainable airline. He said: 'British Airways is the highest-ranking UK-based airline due to its roadmap to net zero. 'When it comes to short-haul airlines, Easyjet ranks top with its emissions intensity being almost 18% lower than the global average.' Metro previously spoke to extreme day trippers about their fast flight turnarounds and jam-packed itineraries. Lauren Brogan became an accidental extreme day tripper after she calculated that a quick trip to Geneva would be cheaper than staying overnight at a hotel in Glasgow, near where she lives. Lauren found cheap flight tickets to the Swiss city on Skyscanner and paid just £52 for a return from Edinburgh, staying at a hotel by the lakefront in Versoix. She said she loved the 'spontaneity' of the trip, adding: 'It was a city I'd never thought about visiting before, but there were loads to see and do and it's absolutely stunning.' More Trending She organised a full itinerary, which included visiting the United Nations Building, Botanical Gardens, The Flower Clock, Favarger Chocolate Factory, the Broken Chair monument, Mont Blanc Bridge and Lake Geneva. Lauren said she would recommend an extreme day trip to anyone. She said: 'It's a great way to maximise annual leave and visit more places around the world on a budget.' However, there are some downsides, the most obvious one being time. Lauren said it was 'difficult' trying to fit everything into the trip, admitting that there wasn't enough time to see anything and that she 'still needs to go back to see more of the city'. Eloise Skinner, author and psychotherapist, warns that with extreme trips, 'people might be less concerned about the quality of the experience, and more about the ability to display the trip online'. She added: 'Another factor could be the sense of achievement or adrenaline as a whole – quick trips can feel thrilling, exciting and non-stop – all emotions that we can crave, especially if our daily lives start to feel routine and predictable.' These trips, she says, could result in negative health effects. She said: 'Exhaustion and a sense of being drained might be a result of extreme day trips. 'We might feel and bit disorientated since we don't spend long enough in a particular place to get our bearings or a sense of comfort within the environment.' Eloise advises that spending time researching may help 'reduce feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion'. She also advises 'finding ways to stay grounded during fast-paced trips' – such as scheduling moments to rest or 'move to a slower pace'. Do you have a story to share? On 'Bridmas', Noel - the driver - will check who is on the 'nice list' before taking them to the North Pole. For a spot of early gift shopping there will be a Christmas-themed daytime market and later a food festival in the evening. Over at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, families can enjoy spectacular views whilst tucking into festive treats. The venue will also be hosting a magic show as well as face painting. Then over at East Riding Leisure Centre there will be a festive soft play area for little ones. If things couldn't get more bizarre, down on the seafront families will also be able to get up close and investigate road gritters used each winter. The event is organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and will take place on August 6, 2025. The 'Search for Santa' day trip will see families fly to Kittila, with a traditional cooked English breakfast served to you on the flight. At the Snow Village you will be able to see an ice hotel with igloo-inspired rooms, an ice bar, ice chapel and numerous ice sculptures. Families will then hop onto a sleigh ride led by Rudolph. NEED a holiday this summer but outrageous prices putting you off? We've crunched the numbers to find the cheapest locations for family holidays across Europe. All-inclusive family package holidays from the UK have jumped in price for some of the most popular destinations among Brits, including Spain, Cyprus and Greece. 5 However, some holiday hotspots in these countries still have some great deals, if you know where to look. TUI, Jet2, Travel Supermarket and Love Holidays all gave us the inside knowledge on their most affordable destinations still on sale for summer 2025. Because where you go in Europe can make a big difference to how much you spend. These are the cheapest destinations in Europe for a holiday this summer 2025 (All package prices are for two adults and two children and include return flights from the UK). Sozopol, Bulgaria Sozopol is a top pick for budget-conscious Brits who want a break in the sun without a big price tag. As well as a beautiful old town dotted with cute and cheap cafes and shops, Sozopol has one of the most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria. Our Bulgaria expert, Pavlena Todorova, recommends Central Beach in Sozopol over the more famous Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. This sweeping bay is rich in golden sand and has beautiful, calm blue water that is perfect for swimming. Central Beach, as well as Sozopol itself, is also less busy than the capital Sofia and its popular beaches. Plus, the beach bars and cafes along the sand are slightly cheaper and you'll find it easier to get a table overlooking the sea. Beach Bar, Sparrow, has a shady terrace on the sand and you can get a beer for £2.50 and chicken and chips for £6. Kos, Greece Kos has always had a quiet reputation for being one of the lesser crowded, more affordable of the Greek islands. You are spoiled for choice here with brilliant blue waters, sandy beaches and quiet coves, where if you go at the right time of day, you could be the only person on the beach. Rent a small speedboat for £50 a day and explore the harder to reach beaches, or just take it a mile off the shore and spend the day sunbathing or and jumping off the boat into the crystal clear sea to get cool. For dinner, one of the many local restaurants in Kos Town will have you filling your boots with gyros wraps, hummus and chips for only £5. A cold glass of wine to wash it all down is around £4 at most places. Sunsets are free and stunning, especially when viewed from a table on the beach. Paphos, Cyprus 5 Paphos is a top budget destination if you want a mix of sunbathing and sightseeing. The coastline is packed with stunning Blue Flag beaches, and spacious sandy stretches all along the coast. There is a range of hotels in every price range, from 2* self-catering apartments where you can get terrific deals, to luxury villas and 5* star hotels. If you want to spend time exploring, many of Paphos' main attractions are within walking distance of the harbour. Ask if your hotel has a shuttle to get you there, the rest can be explored on foot. This includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, which has some of the Mediterranean's best-preserved mosaics and Paphos Old Town, which mixes ancient buildings and streets with modern additions better than most classic cities. You have to go to Pinguino on the harbour for breakfast. A full English or a huge pile of pancakes is only £5 and we guarantee you won't need lunch that day. Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and has an interesting history, including the 16th century Koules fortress on the old Venetian port and the striking fortification walls. The best deals for beach holidays in this area are just outside the city on the north coast. There are a lot of resorts along the coastline, most look out onto the brilliant blue Aegean Sea. The beaches close to Analipsi are the longest and sandiest. The rocky coastline here also makes this a great area for snorkelling. You will find there are lots of boat trips and guides offering tours at affordable prices. Lanzarote, Canary Islands Lanzarote is one the best islands in the Canaries for families. Everything is on offer here, from paddleboarding to boat hire, paragliding and of course, paddling and swimming in the calm waters, which are ideal for younger children. Plus, the weather here is almost guaranteed to be sunny and hot almost all year, so those who can travel outside of term time can get an even better deal. The beaches are framed by green hillsides that have hotels and residential homes nestled in cliffs. Deals on hotels from all the major holiday companies are very competitive with packages for as little as £200 per person for a week if you can travel outside of the school holidays. And there are so many beachfront bars and restaurants, if you don't get food with your hotel package, there is no end of offers to get you in. Bottles of beer are £4 on the seafront but only £2 if you pick up a pack in the supermarket. You may have set your sights on the Costa del Sol but you may find much better deals for lesser-known beach places like Bulgaria and Poland. These destinations have beautiful beaches and low lifestyle costs, with beer as low as £2 a pint. Money talks. To be really clever, choose destinations where the value of the pound is strong. This means more bang for your buck whether you are buying a beer and a sandwich or indulging in a serious shopping spree. This year, the weakest currencies against the GBP include Turkey, Bulgaria and Portugal. Staycation in the UK Staying on British soil means you don't have to navigate the airport or pay extra for baggage, transfers or currency exchange. There are still some excellent deals going on UK holiday parks that have water slides, kids clubs and beaches on the doorstep. These can often work out less than overseas flights alone. If you are not a big drinker or eater or have fussy kids in the family, booking an all-inclusive might not be the best option for your group. So many resorts have self-catering packages too. You will get all the perks of the resort facilities, like kids clubs, evening entertainment and pools, but with a small kitchenette to make your own lunch and dinner and save big. Book very early… Some packages, such as with Jet2hoidays and TUI can be booked a year in advance and those willing to commit early can sometimes get some unbelievable discounts. If you know when you want to travel, keep an eye out for prices on the destinations and resorts you want to book. They may go up and down in price throughout the year, depending on whether airlines and companies have a sale on. …or, last minute.
