BBC News3 days ago
The world premiere of a musical about Anne Boleyn is to be performed at her childhood home on Saturday.Henry VIII's second wife, who was beheaded in 1536, grew up at Hever Castle in Kent.Anne Boleyn: The Musical will be staged at a specially constructed 1,800-seat outdoor auditorium on the lawn outside the castle until 30 August.A production spokesperson said: "The castle itself forms a key part of the set, heightening the sense of authenticity and theatrical grandeur."
"The musical tells Anne's personal story, revealing how her ambitions and choices not only placed her at the heart of Tudor court life but ultimately helped alter the course of English history," the show's producers said. It covers her emotional farewell to her family at Hever, her experiences in the courts of Flanders and France and her return to England, where she catches the attention of King Henry VIII.Roxana Silbert, the musical's director, said: "Anne Boleyn has so often been portrayed as just a manipulative flirt. "The show throws new light on this brilliant, headstrong, charismatic woman who brought very radical and progressive ideas with her from Europe, drove social change, and ultimately laid the way for her daughter Elizabeth to become queen."
West End performer Emily Lane plays the title role, leading a professional cast of established musical theatre names, alongside a 35-strong community ensemble drawn from Kent. Open auditions were held in Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells in March and April. Each audience member will wear a personal headset, allowing them to experience all the drama "in an immersive and intimate way".Duncan Leslie, Hever Castle's chief executive, said: "The opportunity to host Anne Boleyn: The Musical was something we couldn't resist. "We look forward to welcoming long-time fans of Hever as well as many newcomers, offering them a not-to-be-missed, West End-calibre performance at one of England's best loved locations."

Jo Whiley reveals the iconic star who left her feeling 'tiny and stupid' during an 'unpleasant' interview

Jo Whiley has opened up about the celebrity interview that left her feeling 'tiny and stupid'. Speaking on her Dig It podcast, Jo, 60, said that her confidence took a major knock after an interaction with Eminem and Dr Dre when asked if she had ever been starstruck during an interview. Jo said: 'I remember interviewing Eminem and Dr Dre one time and that was horrible. I'd interviewed Eminem when he was very young and he was very shy and polite. 'He kept calling me "ma'am" all the time and he was really, really sweet and humble. 'Then a couple of years later he came back on the show but with Dr Dre and the fame had happened and he was just this other creature altogether. 'They were just so playful with me - and can I just say they made me feel so tiny and so stupid.' While Jo thought that Eminem, now 52, was 'really sweet and humble' when she first interviewed him, she did not have such a pleasant experience when he was joined by Dr Dre Jo admitted that the interview was overall 'a really unpleasant experience' as she and her co-host Zoe Bell, 46, opened up about being starstruck by celebs. The revelation comes after Jo opened up about battling anxiety at the height of her DJing career in the 90s. She told Woman's Health: 'I remember doing one gig and I was just so scared, I thought I can't go on like this. This is ridiculous. 'It's ruining my life because I'm just such a ball of anxiety. 'But then I realised how happy it was making people when I do these gigs and that was a game changer.' Jo then took the opportunity to speak out against the culture of 'lad mags' - lifestyle magazines from the 90s and early noughties aimed at men and typically featuring a woman also in her underwear. The BBC presenter said: 'There was so much objectification and judgement of women and their bodies. 'It was a ludicrous time to be a woman, but I just kept my head down and weathered the storm.' Jo hasn't just candidly spoken about experiencing anxiety, she has also opened up about battling it during the menopause to Women's Health. Referencing Davina McCall's campaign to get women talking more about the menopause, she said she 'really lost' herself at the time. She said that the gym and fitness are ultimately what got her through that challenging time in her life. Jo said: 'I cried all the time. 'I mean, I cry a lot anyway but I cried all the time. 'I just felt very weak, and going to the gym and getting myself strong has played a really, really big part in helping me be the person I am today. It really saved me.'

Mo Gilligan shares first video of 'secret son' Rudi after child's mother claimed she could 'count on her fingers and toes' how many times the comedian has seen him

Mo Gilligan has shared a rare video of the child he allegedly fathered during a brief relationship with model Selina Christoforou - after she blasted him for failing to offer her any support. The comedian has been publicly attacked by Christoforou, who claims he failed to show any interest in their infant son Rudi following his birth in January 2014. Sharing a video on her social media channels, the heavily tattooed model, 35, claimed she could 'count on her fingers and toes' how many times Gilligan, 37, had seen the child over the last 17 months. But the British star appeared to respond on Monday evening by sharing a video, apparently of the infant enjoying some quality time with his father. The brief black-and-white clip featured the boy, whose identity was concealed, gazing up at the camera while playing a game. Christoforou condemned Gilligan's parenting as she claimed she can 'can count on her fingers and toes' how many times he has met his baby son. The comedian, who is reportedly expecting another baby with his current girlfriend, is said to have had a short-lived romance with Selina before she gave birth to Rudi. Christoforou has now spoken out in a viral TikTok video and claimed that Mo has not consistently been in her son's life. Sharing her version of events, she said: 'I just finally posted on Instagram about my son's dad so for your information... 'If you don't follow my Instagram I don't blame you. Um, Mo Gilligan is his dad. Very much in quotation marks.' 'I've kept that for nine very long months of being pregnant on my own, bringing up my son on my own. 'Pretty much ignored his existence for the first year of his life, barely bothers with him now - can probably use my fingers and toes to count how many times he's even f***ing met him, you know. I kept thinking no, it'll get better. It has to get better. 'Rudi, that's my son, is so unbelievable, he's the most amazing child. He's such a f***ing joy and I just kept thinking that would be enough. 'I completely get you can't make someone be a dad and he made it also very clear he didn't want to be a dad and seemed to kind of change his mind.' The heavily tattooed model claimed she could 'count on her fingers and toes' how many times Gilligan had seen the child over the last 17 months. But the British star appeared to respond on Monday evening by sharing a video, apparently of the infant enjoying some quality time with his father Christoforou is said to have become pregnant after dating Gilligan after they met online and decided to keep the unborn child, despite it coming as a shock to the 'careful' pair. Daily Mail contacted a representative for Gilligan, who declined to comment. The news that he had apparently become a dad had remained under wraps until this week, when it was reported that Mo had fathered a secret baby and was expecting a second with a different mother, his girlfriend Taia Tulher, 28. Sources said that Gilligan, who stars on The Masked Singer, is now expecting the new arrival in just a matter of weeks with Taia. It's thought that the couple have been quietly dating for two years, and are now living together in London. Gilligan previously split from his girlfriend of four years, actress Sophie Wise, at the end of 2022, and it was then revealed he was looking for love on celebrity dating app Raya. Taia had first revealed her pregnancy in an Instagram post back in March, but had never revealed her partner's identity. Revealing her growing bump, she captioned her post: 'Today, I carry the love that made me, the love I've always known… and the love I've only just begun to understand. 'For a long time, I didn't know when I would share this. But now feels right. Because today, on Mother's Day, I get to celebrate my own mother - and the tiny soul who has already made me one, too.' Gilligan has previously opened up about the mental health struggles he had during his rise to fame in his 20s, before turning to therapy to help him cope. The comedian shot to fame in 2017 after going viral on social media and what followed was a string of huge TV gigs, including The Masked Singer, after joining the judging panel in 2020. Speaking to Jamie Laing on the Great Company podcast on Wednesday, Gilligan admitted that he 'lost' himself as the money came rolling in - before therapy helped him break down his walls and connect with people. 'I lost myself, I struggled in a sense of 'Wow this is all I've wanted, I've got the big cheque, but I'm not in the happiest place',' he said. 'I was massively depressed. That's when I started therapy. I didn't cry in my twenties, I put up a wall, and when I got depressed it all came out. 'Therapy helped me open up not so much to my therapist but other people, to let my real personality out and connect.' In 2022, Gilligan accepted the award for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme at the BAFTA TV Awards and used his speech to speak about his mental health. 'Oh s**t I'm so nervous. I have to big up Channel 4. In 2017 when I got offered a show, my mental health wasn't in the best place,' he reflected. 'Channel 4 brought me into this big building. They trusted me and let me be myself and bring black boy joy to the screens. The comedian was dealt a blow in 2023 after losing two of his television presenting gigs in one week. He revealed that year that Channel 4's The Lateish Show would not be returning after four series, and then his BBC show That's My Jam was given the chop by the broadcaster after one series. He was hand-picked for the programme by American comedian and television host Jimmy Fallon with the show being based on the music-themed segments of the US star's talk show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Gilligan also presented the BRIT Awards for two yeas in a row, but stepped down in 2023.

Love Island final descends into chaos as islanders Tommy and Ben admit to kissing the SAME girl at recent event in shock confession

The Love Island Final descended into chaos on Monday evening after two of the past male islanders admitted to kissing the same girl during a club appearance. As Maya Jama was joined by a host of former islanders, Tommy held his hands up as he admitted his relationship with Lucy was over after his recent antics. Speaking candidly Tommy confessed: 'I'll hold my hands up it was my fault. 'I was at an event, and I had about five Blue Lagoon cocktails... and there was this girl..' As the cast and crowd exclaimed Tommy admitted he had shared a kiss with the girl at the event. However he wasn't the only one as Ben also revealed he had shared a kiss at the same event... and it transpired it was the same girl. While Lucy seemed less annoyed as she explained her and Tommy weren't exclusive, Andrada was less than impressed with her man's behaviour. Fans were furious as they took to Twitter to share their anger at the boys actions. They penned: 'ben & tommy both making out with the same girl at the same event. literally thee worst group of men ever casted'; 'Whoever was the girl who got with Tommy and Ben, need to get her a love island contest asap lol'; 'tommy and ben both kissing the same girl a week after being out the villa… please stop letting these men into the villa'; 'Tommy and Ben?? The same girl???'; 'I wanna know who the girl was that kissed Tommy and Ben at that event'; 'Tommy and Ben both kissing the same girl at this event has me screaming I need to know who she is!' Toni and Cach were crowned the winners of Love Island as this year's series drew to a close on Monday evening. The pair beat Harry and Shakira to first place in one of the most dramatic summer's of the ITV reality show. Toni has made history as the first American contestant to enter the UK Love Island villa and her and Cach seem set on making their relationship work despite the transatlantic distance. Meanwhile Angel and Ty finished in fourth after receiving the fewest public votes, with Yasmin and Jamie finishing in third. Toni and Cach had a rocky beginning after meeting during Casa Amor. However it wasn't long until the pair found themselves in a major love triangle with Harrison in a dramatic week. Yet once Harrison decided to leave the villa with Lauren, Toni set her sights on Cach and the pair have gone from strength to strength. Toni and Cach won despite the bookies odds revealing it was Harry and Shakira in the running to win, just hour ahead of the live final.
