Hibs 1 Midtjylland 2 (agg 2-3 AET): Spectacular Brumado strike late in extra time ends Hibees' Europa League hopes

The Irish Suna day ago
MIDTJYLLAND sub Junior Brumado spectacularly put Hibs out of the Europa League with a gut-wrenching last gasp extra time winner.
Spot-kicks had looked certain until the Brazilian pounced with an overhead kick.

Dario Osario had put the Danes ahead in the first half of extra time but
Rocky Bushiri
levelled before the visitors' stunning late joy moment.
Now it's a Conference League qualifier for
Hibs
against Partizan Belgrade in
Serbia
next
week.
The Danes were smarting after the first leg, stunned by the quality and aggression of Hibs - but, then, they'd also clearly underestimated them.
This time, though, there was never a chance of that. They were out to prove a point.
Hibs, however, started well - Chris Cadden's superb ball down the line for a sprinting clear
Martin Boyle
seeing the winger
fire
in a great cross for no takers.
The atmosphere was electric and a few minutes later Boyle had a goal-bound shot from point-blank range brilliantly blocked by Lee Han-beom.
Then Warren O'Hora headed straight at Jonas Lossl from a great
Jordan
Obita cross.
Midtjylland, though, started to play their way into this tie and dictate things.

Hibs keeper Jordan Smith saved well from an Osorio shot from distance.
He'd later be beaten by the same player.
Legendary Mixu Paatelainen lifts lid on Jim McLean's brutal blast, infamous Walter Smith bust-up and his Hibs job regrets
The hosts came right back with a Jamie McGrath 25-yarder which flew narrowly over.
Strong-man
striker
Kieron Bowie was a problem for the Midtjylland
defence
but so was first leg goal-scorer and livewire winger Aral Simsir at the other end.
Hibs fans erupted in the 16th minute believing Bowie had blasted them into the lead from a superb Obita cross. But a
VAR
check would rule it out for offside.
It would be the last moment of joy for the Hibees in a half promptly controlled by the Danes.
Osorio blasted over when he should've scored then Han-beom headed straight at Smith just six yards out.
Josh
Mulligan tried his luck from 25-yards but his shot was wildly over.
Midtjylland regained control - and it needed the best defending of O'Hora to deny Simsir.
Smith made decent stops in quick
succession
from Oliver Sorensen and then from Franculino Dju as Hibs fans got anxious.
But it was goal-less at the break with everything still to play for.
Hibs had competed well but Midtjylland were the better footballing side. Sharper, slicker.
Eight minutes into the second half it looked like they'd scored - a straightforward Han-beom ball down the middle finding a totally unmarked Dju who controlled, turned and clinically finished inside the box.

But this time VAR came to the
rescue
of Hibs with the striker ruled offside.
Cadden forced a decent save from Lossl but it had become more about defending for Hibs.
Dju was sent clean through by Osorio after 66 minutes but after dragging his heels tried to go round Smith before O'Hora got back to save the day.
Hibs were hanging on going into the closing stages of regular time - and Smith saved well from a deflected Osorio shot, then a Mads Bech Sorensen header.
Attacker Elie Youan came off the bench for his first appearance since March.
Hibs thought they'd sensationally nicked it two minutes into added time - Boyle storming through to square for Nicky Cadden to tap in, but the Hibs captain was ruled offside by VAR.
But it would be extra time and Midtjylland broke the dead-lock after four minutes with a fabulous left-foot blast from Osorio.
Bushiri headed straight at Lossl but he'd make amends in added time of first half extra time by ramming
home
a superb Youan cut-back for 1-1 and 2-2 on aggregate.
Hibs - roared on by their fans - came alive again.

Midtjylland replaced keeper Lossl with Elias Rafn Olafsson - clearly thinking of penalties - but they wouldn't need him as sub Brumado sensationally pounced a minute from the end of extra time.

Stalemate sees Shamrock Rovers comfortably through in Conference League

UEFA Conference League (second qualifying round, second leg) Shamrock Rovers 0 St Joseph's 0 (Shamrock Rovers win 4-0 on aggregate) Paul Buttner reports from Tallaght Stadium WITH THE hard yards emphatically done in last week's 4-0 win in Gibraltar, Shamrock Rovers never needed to come close to adding to that record away win in Europe here to rubber-stamp their passage through to the third round of the Conference League qualifiers. Stephen Bradley's side now meet Kosovans FC Ballkani, who beat Floriana of Malta 5-3 on aggregate, with the winners advancing to the play-offs for the League Phase. Irish League side Larne, having stunned fellow Kosovans Prishtina in a dramatic penalty shootout, means Rovers travel to Kosovo next Thursday for their first leg (instead of Tuesday), meaning Sunday's league game at home to Derry City goes ahead as rescheduled. With a European debut for 20-year-old defensive midfielder Cian Barrett, one of six changes from Gibraltar, Rovers took seven minutes to settle into the game, creating a gilt-edged chance to have gone ahead on the night. Advertisement Skipper Roberto Lopes and Gary O'Neill worked the ball down the right for the run of Rory Gaffney. The veteran striker skilfully turned inside Geovanni Barba to force a parry save at his left-hand post from Bradley Banda. Danny Grant knows he should have done far better than blaze the rebound high over the crossbar. But that was as good as it got by way of further troubling the St Joseph's goal in the first half as the visitors, playing with no little confidence, spurned a big chance of their own to take the lead on 31 minutes. Barba was allowed to surge forward from the back to play a sublime through ball for the clever run of Javi Forjan. Ed McGinty's positioning was spot on as he saved well with his legs. There was another let off for a sluggish Rovers minutes before the break, Angel Martinez volleying wide after Jayce Olivero's deep cross dropped for him on the edge of the area. With more urgency to their game on the resumption, and Lee Grace and John McGovern into the fray at either end of the pitch, replacing Lopes and Gaffney, Rovers moved the ball with more intent, a terrific save preventing a goal eight minutes in. Teenager Michael Noonan was the unintentional architect with his shot getting a flick off the head of McGovern to bring a superb reaction stop from Banda. While owning the ball for much of the remainder of the game, further clear-cut chances were scarce. There was a late shout for a penalty not entertained by the Swedish referee when Noonan appeared to be tripped by substitute Javi Paul, but, try as they might, Rovers' winner on the night never materialised. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; O'Neill, Lopes (Grace, h-t), C. O'Sullivan; Grant, Barrett, McEneff (Watts, 63), Honohan (Mandroiu, 63); Byrne (Kavanagh, 63); Noonan, Gaffney (McGovern, h-t). St Joseph's: Banda; Volz, Cardozo (Javi Paul, 79), Barba, Olivero; Pena (Rodriguez, 60), Sanchez, Juanma; Gibson (Armental, h-t), Forjan (Santos, 65), Martinez. Referee: Granit Maqedonci (Sweden). Attendance: 5,128.

West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges

LUCAS PAQUETA HAS been cleared of misconduct charges related to alleged breaches of the English Football Association's betting rules, his club West Ham have announced. The Brazilian was charged with four alleged breaches of FA Rule E5.1 by the FA in May 2024 in relation to matches involving West Ham. It was alleged Paqueta directly sought to influence matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market, in order for one or more persons to profit from betting. He denied the charges and an independent regulatory commission found the charges not proven following a hearing. The English FA said two charges against Paqueta related to a failure to co-operate with its investigation had been found proven. The English FA said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'. Advertisement The games Paqueta had allegedly sought to influence were the Hammers' Premier League matches against Leicester on 12 November, 2022, Aston Villa on 12 March, 2023, Leeds on 21 May, 2023 and Bournemouth on 12 August, 2023. Paqueta said in quotes released via the club: 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.' West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady added: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. 'He has maintained his innocence from the outset and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process. 'Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. 'It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout and he is now looking forward to drawing a line under this episode, as is everyone at West Ham United.' Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one – professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. 'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience. 'Level is delighted that we've been able to help demonstrate that Lucas' integrity as a player and a person is in no doubt. 'Now, he can finally get back to focusing on the things that matter most to him – playing football and being with his family.' The English FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time.

Tottenham eye Bayern star, Forest sign Swiss winger for €39 million

Updated at 20.33 TOTTENHAM HAVE opened talks with Bayern Munich over the potential loan signing of Joao Palhinha, the PA news agency understands. Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer in a deal worth up to £47.4million (€55 million), but endured a difficult debut campaign in Germany. The Portugal midfielder struggled with injury problems and only made six starts in the Bundesliga when fit under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany, which has opened the door for a temporary move back to London with Tottenham. Spurs have plenty of options in midfield, but have multiple competitions to deal with in the 2025-26 season after their Europa League victory in May secured Champions League qualification and the addition of Palhinha would be a boost for new head coach Thomas Frank. Palhinha, who turned 30 earlier this month, was linked with a transfer to Tottenham before he signed for Bayern. The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder enjoyed a successful two years at Fulham, where he made 79 appearances and scored eight times to become a fan favourite at Craven Cottage. Spurs secured the services of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham at the start of July, but failed in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White and will now hope to land Palhinha on a season-long loan. Dan Ndoye (file pic). Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest have signed Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna. The 24-year-old, who scored nine goals in a total of 41 appearances for Bologna last season, including their winner in the Coppa Italia final, has agreed a five-year deal. Advertisement Ndoye arrives for a fee reported to be around £34 million (€39 million). Ndoye said: 'I am really happy to have signed for the club. It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. 'It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started.' Ndoye featured in all eight of Bologna's Champions League matches last season and has made 22 senior appearances for his country. He began his professional career in France with Nice and, after spending two seasons on loan at Basel, he joined Bologna in the summer of 2023. Forest's chief football officer Ross Wilson said: 'Dan is an exciting new addition to our squad and a player we have tracked extensively over a long period of time. 'We are delighted that he joins Nottingham Forest and continues his own ambitious journey here with us.' Ndoye is Forest's third summer signing following the arrivals of striker Igor Jesus and defender Jair Cunha, both from Brazilian side Botafogo, earlier this month, while England winger Morgan Gibbs-White signed a new three-year deal with the club last week, having been linked with a move to Tottenham. In addition, Txiki Begiristain has left his role as director of football at Manchester City after 13 years with the club. Begiristain announced he would be leaving the club in October 2024, and Hugo Viana is set to take over his role ahead of the new season. The 60-year-old joined City back in 2012 and saw the club achieve 21 trophies during his reign, including seven Premier League titles, two FA Cups and their first Champions League. City will celebrate Begiristain's achievements around the Manchester derby on 14 September, where he will be the special guest for the match. Begiristain spent seven years as Barcelona's technical director between 2003 and 2010 before joining City and played an important role during Pep Guardiola's time in Spain as well as in England. Guardiola previously said a part of him will leave when Begiristain decides to walk away. He said: 'Part of me is leaving, I would say. 'A friend of mine and one of the architects of one of the best teams ever from Barcelona, and now here.' Finally, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on Thursday completed his permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray in a €75 million four-year deal. A key figure in Napoli's 2023 title triumph, Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games as the Istanbul club claimed their 25th Super Lig crown. He was absent as Napoli, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, resumed training at the start of the week as the finer details of the deal were concluded. Napoli coach Antonio Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side's Scudetto defence next term. Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks, but up to Thursday had stalled over the terms of payment for the transfer. Napoli recently recruited Kevin De Bruyne from Premier League club Manchester City. Osimhen becomes Galatasaray's most expensive ever player.
