Knicks vs. Pacers odds, betting: Best bets for the Eastern Conference finals

Yahoo20-05-2025
The New York Knicks executed a stunning trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves before the season, dealing Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo in a deal for Karl-Anthony Towns. They have to be happy with the result, as New York is in the Eastern Conference finals for just the second time since 1975 — and the first time as a favorite since 1994. The Knicks are -155 favorites to advance to the NBA Finals at BetMGM.
The Indiana Pacers are in the conference finals for the second consecutive year and are a lot healthier than last year when they were swept by the Boston Celtics, the eventual champions. Tyrese Haliburton and Co. shocked the No. 1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers in the last round and won't be intimidated by the Madison Square Garden environment.
This should be another fantastic series between two Eastern Conference rivals.
Yahoo Sports asked handicapper Michael Fiddle for his thoughts on the Knicks-Pacers series and his best bets:
Fiddle: "The Knicks are coming in with a rest disadvantage, but because they closed Game 6 on Saturday, they still have four days off, which neutralizes that disadvantage. It was really important they closed that series in Game 6, so they didn't have to travel to and from Boston.
"My model had the regular-season numbers as Knicks -3.6 in Game 1, so Knicks -3.5 was spot on, with a little bit of Knicks action coming into the market, which is what we've seen. If you count home-court advantage as slightly more advantage in the playoffs, -4 or -4.5 makes sense. I think we see that line steam a little more. Home-court advantage for the Knicks should be stronger in the playoffs than the regular season because star players who are questionable are more likely to play because it's MSG.
"I like Knicks at -4.5 or better in Game 1 and the Knicks in series. All of the regular-season matchups moved toward the over and cashed the over on the closing line, and we've already seen the total move 2.5 points as well. Probably a high-scoring series and a Knicks win."
Best bets: NY Knicks -4.5 in Game 1, NY Knicks -155 to win series

Indiana Pacers rescind Enrique Freeman's two-way contract making ex-Zips star a free agent

Former Akron Zip center Enrique Freeman has entered the dead period after the NBA Summer League as a free agent. Freeman, who played for the Indiana Pacers last season on a two-way contract, had his offer for another two-way deal rescinded after the team's summer league season in favor of guard Traelon Peter. Both played well in the summer season. Peter averaged 9.5 points and shot 57.1%, according to reports. Freeman averaged a near double-double — 16.6 points and 9.6 points — playing primarily at center. He became a victim of a numbers game, according to an Indianapolis Star report. The Pacers have four centers on the roster, and Freeman, at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, is smallish for the position in the NBA. "He's on the cusp of being an NBA roster-type player," Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan said on a recent 'Setting the Pace' podcast. "His challenge is his position for the NBA. We play him at a lot of 5. He's probably undersized for that for the NBA. He's got a motor. He has a nose for the ball. He's tough. He's smart. It's a tough decision for us, but the backcourt spot is probably more where we need some depth." George M. Thomas covers a myriad of things including sports and pop culture, but mostly sports, he thinks, for the Beacon Journal. Knicks sign Mikal Bridges to four-year, $150 million contract extension

Mikal Bridges' future with the Knicks is no longer in question, as the team has signed the veteran guard to a four-year, $150 million contract extension, sources confirmed to SNY. Bridges was eligible for a four-year extension worth as much as $156 million. By agreeing to a deal at $6 million less than the max, Bridges gives the Knicks some financial flexibility in an era where every dollar counts for contending teams. That future financial flexibility was an important part of the deal for the Knicks and Bridges, per sources familiar with the matter. 'He wants to be here and wants to win here,' a league source told SNY. Bridges, who joined the Knicks last summer in an offseason trade with the Nets, averaged 17.6 points with 3.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds across 82 regular season games in 2024-25. The 28-year-old then scored 15.6 points on average in the playoffs, helping the Knicks make a run to the Eastern Conference Finals. He had an up-and-down regular season but made several clutch plays for New York in the postseason. The Knicks like how Bridges (who turns 29 next month) fits the timeline of their other top players. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson are all 30 or under. Brunson, Towns, Bridges, Hart and Anunoby are all under contract through 2026-27. The Bridges extension, which was first reported by ESPN, kicks in next season. If he'd waited to become an unrestricted free agent, Bridges would have been eligible for a deal as long as five years and for much more total money. Brunson took a significant discount by signing an extension last summer. His decision to sign the extension instead of waiting until free agency will help the Knicks avoid onerous penalties in the second apron. Bridges' discount will also, to a much lesser degree. But every dollar counts for teams like the Knicks, who want to contend. By having a team salary under the second apron, the Knicks will have more tools to acquire free agents and the flexibility to make trades that they wouldn't have if they are over the second apron, which is $222 million in 2026-27. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, the Knicks currently have $18 million in space under the second apron heading into the summer of 2027. The Knicks sent five first-round picks to the Nets last summer to acquire Bridges. So they needed to either extend him or put him in a trade that netted a significant return. Now that Bridges is signed to the extension, he is ineligible to be traded for six months.

Sixers ranked No. 18 in league power rankings after offseason moves

The Philadelphia 76ers had a quiet offseason following the big free agency bonanza of 2024 when they won the Paul George sweepstakes. With a focus on getting younger and winning around the margins, the Sixers made a handful of minor moves in order to prepare themselves for another run at the title in the 2025-26 season. Anything the Sixers do in the coming season will depend on the health of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. While the additions of VJ Edgecombe, Trendon Watford, Jabari Walker, and Dominick Barlow will help on the floor, those three aforementioned stars will need to lead the way and be on the floor for Philadelphia to have a chance to do anything in the Eastern Conference. ESPN put out their latest power rankings with the Sixers coming in ranked No. 18 in the league after the offseason moves: The 76ers have done some nice things on the margins, including landing Jabari Walker on a two-way deal and snagging VJ Edgecombe and Johni Broome in last month's NBA draft. As usual, though, the biggest news of the offseason was injury-related: Paul George underwent a knee procedure that will be reevaluated before the start of training camp in September and Joel Embiid declared there is no timeline for his return. The Sixers are one big question mark heading into the new season. Of course, the talent is there. However, will it be on the floor? While Watford and the new additions will play a role, the Sixers will need to make sure their stars are healthy and ready to roll. If not? Then there is no shot for Philadelphia to make a move up the ladder in the East.
