Staggering steel swan sits poised along Highway 169 in Washago
A staggering, steel statue of a wing-spread swan is now poised gracefully along Highway 169 in Washago.
This long-anticipated art piece is the result of years of dedication and fundraising efforts. Spearheaded by Washago Art Club members Jan McKnight, Doug Cooper, and Glenn Hudgin, the 'Swan Project' was inspired by the natural beauty of the area particularly the annual arrival of over 100 swans that winter nearby.
Club members say they hope this art piece becomes a memorable landmark for the Wahago community and visitors to the area.

Sanctioned at Highway 169 and Muskoka Street, the long brown wings point towards the Wye Marsh which is a subtle nod to the birds' natural habitat.
Doug Cooper designed the sculpture, which has been brought to life by local ironworker and sculptor Matt Church. Church has been working on the piece since the fall, constructing the large structure from steel.
The complete statue stands approximately eight to 10-feet tall and is elevated on a rock base near the busy Washago intersection.
The swan was unveiled on Tuesday following the community parade, which drew several hundred residents and visitors. Among those in attendance were the Warden of the County and the Deputy Mayor of Severn, marking the occasion.

All occupants safe after century-old Kentville home destroyed by fire
Social Sharing A home built in Kentville more than a century ago has been destroyed after catching fire early Sunday. According to Ian Fairclough, the deputy chief of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department, crews received a call that a two-and-a-half storey home on Aldershot Road in North Kentville was on fire around 2 a.m. There were four people inside at the time, said Fairclough, but all escaped without injury. "One of them heard a noise, woke up, looked out and saw the fire at the back of the house through the window, woke the other three occupants, and they were able to get out through the front door," said Fairclough. The home, however, was destroyed. Within 15 minutes of the fire being reported, the fire spread from the back deck to the rest of the home, Fairclough said. Forty firefighters from New Minas, Port Williams, Waterville and Kentville fought the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation but it's not believed to be suspicious.

Two road closures in south London lasting until fall
Florence Street between Eleanor Street and Ashland Street and a section of Eleanor Street between Florence Street and Frances Street will be closed for construction. (Source: City of London) Starting Monday, Londoners can expect more detours to the east part of the city, as two roads will be closed until late November. Florence Street between Eleanor Street and Ashland Street and a section of Eleanor Street between Florence Street and Frances Street will be closed. The road closures are part of the Florence, Eleanor and York infrastructure renewal project, an initiative to replace aging infrastructure. Work being done includes replacing the watermain and underground sewers, adding new curbs, catch basins and gutters. According to Renew London, the construction will also close bike lanes, create an LTC detour and close and restrict sidewalks. Business will remain open, and pedestrians are encouraged to follow posted signage. Those using London transit are encouraged to check out the LTC website. This closure follows last month's closure of nearby Rectory Street for construction lasting until fall.
