Islanders in no rush to sign Max Tsyplakov as the final piece of offseason business

New York Posta day ago
It's been three weeks since July 1, when Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said he was 'very close' to locking up all of his restricted free agents, with no issues expected.
Alexander Romanov already had signed a five-year contract extension by that point, and Darche proved to be correct about Emil Heineman, Simon Holmstrom and Marc Gatcomb, all of whom signed shortly thereafter.

Max Tsyplakov, though, still stands as seemingly the lone unfinished piece of business between Darche and a well-deserved vacation, with the Russian wing having filed for arbitration two weeks ago and no settlement having been reached since.
While the NHLPA has not announced hearing dates for any of the 11 players in the league who filed for arbitration, the window for those hearings opened Sunday and runs through Aug. 4, so a resolution — in the form of arbitration or otherwise — could come down at any point.
Generally speaking, it's quite rare for these situations to get as far as an arbitration hearing, which both sides almost always want to avoid, as it can result in bruised feelings. Of 14 players who filed for arbitration last summer, just one, Nashville defenseman Spencer Stastney, had a hearing.
If it were to get that far, it's worth noting the arbitrator could only award Tsyplakov a one-year deal, as at 26 years old, he's one year away from being an unrestricted free agent.

The Islanders also could walk away if Tsyplakov is awarded $4.85 million or more, which would result in his becoming an unrestricted free agent, though that would be an extraordinary settlement for a player who had 35 points as an NHL rookie last season.
The reasons for delay are likely twofold. First, deadlines tend to spur action in the NHL, and the deadline here, which is to say the hearing date, has not yet come.

Second, Tsyplakov became a father Saturday, and it's safe to presume that is taking priority over pending negotiations.

The Islanders currently have about $4 million in cap space left, not including Matthew Schaefer's as-yet-unsigned entry-level deal, so this is not about a cap crunch.
Tsyplakov had an up-and-down rookie season, showing himself to be an effective contributor while struggling to score at the same level he had in the KHL and bouncing between the second and third lines for much of the second half.

Evolving Hockey projects his next deal to come in at two years with a $2.478 million AAV, which appears to be a solid ballpark estimate.
While Tsyplakov's agent in Russia said in February that he was working toward a figure of $3 million annually, Tsyplakov quickly shot that down.

By way of comparison, the Islanders also just gave Holmstrom — who scored double the goals Tsyplakov did last season and is two years younger, also with arbitration rights — $3.6 million annually over the course of a two-year deal.
There is no reason to assume this would reach the point of Tsyplakov being moved, but Darche already has shown a willingness to set hard lines in negotiations. The general manager repeatedly said he wanted to re-sign Noah Dobson, but when the defenseman's camp did not come down from a number beyond what Darche was comfortable with, the Islanders pivoted and dealt him to Montreal on the eve of the draft.

Blues Soaring Forward Should Hit New Level

St. Louis Blues forward Jake Neighbours broke out in a big way for the Central Division club during the 2023-24 season. In 77 games with the Blues that season, he scored a career-high 27 goals and recorded 38 points. This was undoubtedly a nice breakout year for the 2020 first-round pick, as he proved that he could make an impact at the NHL level. Neighbours followed up his strong 2023-24 season was another good one in 2024-25. In 82 games last season for the Blues, he scored 22 goals and set new career highs with 24 assists, 46 points, and 173 hits. He also provided solid offense for the Blues during the post-season, recording six points in their seven-game first-round series against the Winnipeg Jets. Overall, Neighbours is continuing to head in the right direction with his development and is starting to emerge as a key part of the Blues' roster in the process. However, when noting that he is still only 23 years old and still in the earlier stages of his career, there is clear reason to believe that he can still hit another new level next season. When looking at what Neighbours has done early on in his career, it is fair to argue that he has the potential to emerge as a legitimate top-six forward at the NHL level. If he gets his offense up a bit more and continues to make an impact with his physicality, he could be a big piece of the Blues' core moving forward. It will be fascinating to see what kind of year the Calgary, Alberta native puts together for the Blues next season from here. Blackhawks Young Goalie Continues To Get Praise

The Chicago Blackhawks are hoping that goaltender Spencer Knight will become something special for them. The 2019 first-round pick undoubtedly has plenty of potential and has shown promise early on, but there is a real expectation that he has not hit his ceiling yet. During this past season split between the Florida Panthers and Blackhawks, Knight put together a 17-16-3 record, a .901 save percentage, and a 2.72 goals-against average in 38 games. Overall, it was a solid year for the youngster, and it will be fascinating to see what kind of season he has as the Blackhawks' starter in 2025-26 from here. In 95 career NHL games over four seasons, Knight has a 49-33-9 record, a .904 save percentage, and a 2.83 goals-against average. Due to his solid play over the year, he has now received more praise. Blackhawks' Spencer Knight is One of the Most Impressive Goalies Under 25 The NHL is full of young talent and the league has been getting younger in recent years. The Chicago Blackhawks have some of that young talent on their team and have impressive players at every position. NHL Fantasy/Edge has named their top 10 goalies who are 26 years old or younger for the 2025-26 season, and Knight was ranked at the No. 8 spot. Knight beat out Joel Hofer of the St. Louis Blues and Leevi Merilainen of the Ottawa Senators on the list. Given how Knight has performed early on in his career, him making this list is entirely fair. The potential for him to have a strong season in 2025-26 is there, and this is especially so if he taps into his potential more. Thus, he could be a good goalie for fantasy hockey managers to bring in once the big-name netminders are off the board. Former Blackhawks Forward Had Monster Year During the 2022 NHL off-season, the Chicago Blackhawks elected not to send forward Dylan Strome a qualifying offer. As a result, he became an unrestricted free agent (UFA) and signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals in July of that year. This was after Strome posted 22 goals and 48 points with the Blackhawks during the 2021-22 season. Photo Credit: © Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images
