‘Slayed the dragon': CBA's huge call

Yahoo16-05-2025
Australia's biggest bank believes the battle against inflation has been won, tipping mortgage holders to get back-to-back rate cuts.
Despite national inflation figures coming in hotter than expected and a surge in Aussies employed in April, a Commonwealth Bank economist is 'confident' the RBA will cut interest rates in May before leaving the 'door ajar' for a second rate cut in July.
'We expected the RBA to commence normalising the cash rate in February with a 25bp rate cut, which was delivered, and we also forecast another 25bp rate decrease in May,' CBA head of Australian economics Gareth Aird said in an economic note.
'Recall that the RBA left the cash rate on hold in April, and a rate cut was not explicitly discussed. But it is an understatement to say that a lot has happened since the April board meeting.'
CBA's rate cut call is largely in line with most experts and the money markets forecast, which is pricing in about a 95 per cent chance of a 25 basis point cut in May.
If Mr Aird is right in his prediction, the Australian cash rate would fall from 4.10 to 3.85 per cent.
The RBA will next meet on May 19-20 when it is widely predicted to cut rates by at least 25 basis points before meeting every six weeks throughout 2025.
Even though the RBA will likely leave the 'door ajar' for back-to-back rate cuts when the central bank meets again in July, CBA says its base case is cuts in May, August and November.
'The CBA call for an end-of-year cash rate of 3.35 per cent is also unchanged,' Mr Aird said.
CBA's call to normalise rates comes as the bank believes Australia has beaten inflation, even with 89,000 Australians finding a job and stronger-than-expected wage growth data coming out in April.
Both are usually a sign of inflation due to more Australians having money to spend in the economy chasing a similar amount of goods.
'Our view is that the proverbial inflation dragon has been slayed,' Mr Aird said.
'But we are not convinced the RBA will share that view just yet given the unemployment rate is still below the RBA's estimate of the NAIRU (non‑accelerating inflation rate of unemployment).'
Treasurer Jim Chalmers said throughout the week that the strong wage and employment data was in line with Australia's soft landing, which is a slowing down of economic activity without causing a recession.
'Real wages reflect the progress we've made together on wages but also the progress we've made together on inflation,' Mr Chalmers said.
'We've got wages growing and we've got inflation falling and those are really the key elements of this soft landing that we have been engineering in our economy at a time of really substantial global economic uncertainty.'
CBA agreed, saying the 'soft landing has been achieved'.
'And this will mean the RBA can continue to normalise the cash rate as we move through 2025 to a level it considers to be a more neutral setting,' Mr Aird said.
'The Reserve Bank of Australia will look past the strength in employment, wages data and cut rates when they meet on May 20.'

Glencore copper equivalent production grows 5% in H1 2025

Glencore has reported a 5% year-on-year (YoY) rise in copper equivalent (CuEq) production in the first half of 2025 (H1 2025). The growth was primarily attributed to the inclusion of steelmaking coal volumes from Elk Valley Resources (EVR), which Glencore acquired in July 2024. Steelmaking coal production totalled 15.7 million tonnes (mt). Own-sourced copper production stood at 343,900 tonnes (t) in H1 2025, a 26% slump YoY, mainly due to lower head grades and recoveries. The recoveries contributed to the reduced outputs from Collahuasi, Antapaccay, Antamina and KCC. Conversely, cobalt production saw a 19% increase to 18,900t in H1 2025, largely due to higher grades and volumes at Mutanda. Zinc production experienced a 12% uplift, with 465,200t produced. This was mainly due to higher grades at Antamina and increased production at McArthur River. Nickel production faced a 7% decline, with Murrin Murrin's maintenance downtime impacting results. The company's ferrochrome production was reduced by 28% to 433,000t. This was a strategic response to smelting conversion margin pressures, leading to the suspension of operations at the Boshoek and Wonderkop smelters. Energy coal production remained steady at 48.3mt, with stronger Australian production offsetting cuts at Cerrejón. Glencore CEO Gary Nagle said: 'A comprehensive review of our industrial asset portfolio during the period recognised opportunities to streamline our industrial operating structure, to optimise departmental management and reporting, and to support enhanced technical excellence and operational focus. 'This review also identified c.$1bn of cost savings opportunities (against a 2024 baseline) across our various operating structures, which are expected to be fully delivered by the end of 2026. H2 2025 is expected to already generate significant cost savings resulting from these initiatives – further details will be provided in our half-year results on 6 August.' Glencore has revised its full-year forecast for 2025, narrowing the expected copper production range to 850,000–890,000t from the previous estimate of 850,000–910,000t. It also revised its long-term EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) guidance range to $2.3bn (SFr1.87bn)–$3.5bn per annum, from the $2.2bn–$3.2bn in place since 2017. The revision was influenced by the sale of Viterra to Bunge, growth in core businesses and inflationary pressures. The company also said it invested approximately $1.1bn into non-RMI (readily marketable inventories) working capital in H1 2025, focusing on high-return commodity pre-pay and lending opportunities. Glencore's Ferroalloys business has indefinitely suspended operations at the Boshoek and Wonderkop smelters until the ferrochrome market has sufficiently recovered, and is undertaking maintenance at the Lion smelter. Inside the Highly Anticipated Casa Dani, Now Open in Century City

is the Lead Editor of the Southern California/Southwest region, and has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. One of Spain's most celebrated chefs, Dani Garcia, opened his former New York City restaurant Casa Dani inside the Westfield Century City, next to SBE sibling Katsuya, on July 25, 2025. With classic, upscale takes on traditional Spanish cuisine, Casa Dani has been one of the most anticipated new restaurant openings in Los Angeles this year. Expect ultra-thin paella topped with a roasted Cornish game hen, paper-thin Andalusian tuna carpaccio doused with fruity olive oil, and a cheese-laden wagyu beef burger that should draw plenty of attention on social media. Sam Nazarian's SBE and Dani Garcia will take a page from New York and offer all-day service with a reasonable $39 three-course prix fixe menu that should cater to office workers and locals. The menu has more than two dozen selections of Spanish and California-inflected dishes, like avocado and bluefin tartare, paccheri alla vodka, chorizo and aji empanadas, and grilled sea bass (note that like half the options come with additional charges). Finish the lunch prix fixe with roasted pineapple with passionfruit yogurt or caramelized rice pudding. A full a la carte lunch menu offers flexibility too, including iberico ham sandwiches in tomato bread or half-sized vegetable or seafood paellas. Casa Dani's wagyu beef burger. For dinner, there's more of a focus on luxe ingredients. Tuna is prepared four ways in dishes including the famed porterhouse tuna carpaccio, tuna croquettes, and a duo of tartares with pickled vegetable relish. Only larger-sized paellas are offered in the evenings, which should easily feed two people. A 32-ounce bone-in Australian wagyu rib-eye comes with two sides to conjure a Basque-style beef experience. The entire menu balances an LA-centric desire for raw fish and locally sourced vegetables with some Italian pastas (bucatini Bolognese, paccheri alla vodka), and steakhouse-style grilled mains. The evening dessert menu features burnt Basque cheesecake that's become ubiquitous in Los Angeles, plus yuzu flan and chocolate mousse with vanilla chantilly. Frescor Andalusí, one of the chef's signature desserts, is also on the menu, with orange blossom ice cream, pistachio cake, and jasmine. It's all versatile and easy with a certain amount of polish, one would expect from a chef with multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. To drink, expect modern takes on Spanish cocktails like a grapefruit-tinted gin and tonic and an olive oil-laden martini with thyme and peppercorns. Wines are sourced from California, Spain, and France, with a solid set of sherry and port. Casa Dani's interior greatly resembles the modern European vibes of the New York original, with natural tones and surfaces, recalling posh neighborhoods of Mexico City with pops of leafy greens, and appealing green ceramic cups to contrast the camel leather chairs. Toward the open kitchen, a shelf of chilled shellfish, branzino, and snapper signals the restaurant's strength in the seafood department. It should draw plenty of tourists and Westside residents alike looking for buttoned-up Spanish fare in the familiar confines of Westfield Century City. Casa Dani is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and then from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. It's located at 10250 Santa Monica Boulevard, Suite 1799, Los Angeles, CA, 90067. Reservations are available on Resy. The sleek dining room of Casa Dani in Los Angeles. Greenery and curtains surround the dining area of Casa Dani in Los Angeles. Traditional tiling on the ground.
