Indian Railways train ticket booking: Indian Railways (IR) is set to launch a dedicated online train ticket booking portal exclusively for Members of Parliament (MPs). The move aims to streamline travel arrangements and enable seamless ticket booking for both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 23), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development. He informed the House that the Railways is in the process of developing a software to facilitate the booking of reserved train tickets for Parliamentarians.
'The development of software for booking reserved tickets online by sitting as well as former Parliamentarians has been taken up. This will facilitate them to book/cancel the ticket online as per their convenience,' Vaishnaw said.
The minister was responding to a query from Congress MP MK Raghavan, who sought to know whether the government planned to introduce an exclusive online ticket booking platform for MPs for seamless travel arrangements.
According to Railways, the Members of Parliament (MPs) are entitled to travel in First Class Air conditioned or Executive class, in any train with their spouse, in any form any place to any place over the IR. PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah to speak in Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address the Lok Sabha today during the special discussion on Operation Sindoor, news agency ANI reported. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began the special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor', India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The debate continued until midnight on Monday and will resume today at 11 AM. Shah will address the Lok Sabha between 12:00 to 1:00 pm while Modi will speak later in the evening, the news agency said quoting sources. "The objective of Operation Sindoor was not to cross the border or capture the territory, it was to eliminate terror nurseries which Pakistan had nurtured for years, and provide justice to the innocent families who lost their loved ones in cross-border attacks," the Defence Minister, while speaking in the Lower House, said on Monday. Singh asserted that, during Operation Sindoor, India not only demonstrated its military capability, but also its national resolve, morality and political acumen, stressing that New Delhi will give a decisive and clear answer to any terrorist attack. "Those who provide shelter and support to terrorism will not be spared. India is not going to bow down to any kind of nuclear blackmailing or other pressures," he said. Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The objective of Operation Sindoor was not to cross the border or capture the territory, it was to eliminate terror nurseries which Pakistan had nurtured for years. The Congress said on Monday that Home Minister Amit Shah must take the responsibility for the "security lapses" that allowed the Pahalgam terror attack, while asking the Centre to clarify how many Indian jets were downed during Operation Sindoor and "before whom did Prime Minister Narendra Modi surrender" to halt the military action against Pakistan.

EC publishes 2002 SIR data of Bengal's electoral rolls

Kolkata: The Election Commission on Monday published the 2002 special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengal, tabling voter data of 11 districts covering 109 assembly segments. The 23-year-old data — Bengal saw its last SIR in 2002 — was published under the heading "Electoral Roll of SIR 2002, (remaining ACs will be uploaded soon)". Though the Bengal CEO's office did not make a formal comment, the move is largely seen as the first step before SIR rollout in Bengal. The districts covered on Monday included Cooch Behar. Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, Midnapore and Bankura. The first general election after SIR 2002 in Bengal was the 2004 Lok Sabha polls with 4.7 crore voters. The Jan-Feb 2025 special summary revision put Bengal voters at 7.6 crore. The electoral data of the remaining districts will be published on Tuesday, or at most in a couple of days," a senior EC official said, requesting anonymity. On Monday, the state CEO's office also sought clarifications from three assistant returning officers (AROs) of Moyna (East Midnapore), Baruipur (South 24 Parganas) and Rajarhat (North 24 Parganas) over complaints of false voters in electoral rolls. The EC, prima facie, was unsatisfied with the reasons given by the AROs and asked them to appear again on Tuesday with proper documents. EC officials dubbed the exercise as "routine". Among the three seats, BJP won Moyna and Trinamool won Baruipur and Rajarhat. Bengal assembly speaker Biman Banerjee is the Baruipur MLA. "Complaints from many more assembly segments have been received by EC. Those AROs will also be summoned for clarification over the week. The effort is to weed out false voters," the official said. The ongoing hearing in the Supreme Court on the batch of petitions against the Bihar SIR includes TMC MP Mahua Moitra's SLP. Moitra, in her petition, expressed apprehension that the SIR exercise would be replicated in Bengal from Aug 2025, "for which instructions have already been given to EROs". The SC will hear the case on Tuesday, but it has so far refused to stop the Bihar SIR process. TMC has maintained that the SIR exercise will disenfranchise voters who were eligible to vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. It has argued that the SIR mirrored section 3 of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which deals with citizenship by birth, therefore making it an "NRC-like move" done not by the MHA but by the EC. Bengal BJP has consistently demanded SIR, claiming lakhs of Rohingya and Bangladeshis have sneaked into the state's voter rolls.

New normal in fight against terror, world support: Jaishankar lists wins

Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians, marked a 'new normal' in how India responds to terror and showed 'we will never bow down to nuclear blackmail,' External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in the Lok Sabha Monday. Calling for a united approach within the country in dealing with terror, Jaishankar said, 'The challenge of cross-border terrorism continues, but Operation Sindoor marks a new phase. There is now a new normal.' The new normal has five points, he said. 'One: terrorists will not be treated as proxies, two: cross-border terrorism will get an appropriate response, three: terror and talks are not possible together and there will only be talks on terror, four: not yielding to nuclear blackmail and finally, terror and good neighbourliness cannot coexist, blood and water cannot flow together. This is our position.' On the foreign policy dimension of Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar said that thanks to India's diplomacy, The Resistance Front (TRF) — a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba that claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack — was designated as a global terrorist organisation by the US on July 18. He said the focus of India's diplomacy (in the wake of Pahalgam attack) was directed at creating a global understanding of Pakistan's involvement, especially at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), of which Pakistan is presently a (non-permanent) member and India is not. 'Our goals in the Security Council were two: to get an endorsement from the Security Council on the need for accountability, and to bring to justice those who perpetrated this attack,' he said. Jaishankar also said that a result of India's diplomacy post-Pahalgam attack was that only three of the countries that are part of the UN opposed Operation Sindoor. Underlining that India's response to Pahalgam was 'focused, measured and non-escalatory', he said it was important to send a 'clear, strong and resolute' message that 'our red lines had been crossed'. In response to the Opposition's question on why India chose to stop the military action (on May 10), he accused the then Congress-led government of 'inaction' after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. 'People who did nothing have the temerity to ask a government which did so much, which brought down Bahawalpur and Muridke, to say why didn't you do more – it's extraordinary,' he said. He also took on the Opposition for warning the government on a two-front challenge coming from Pakistan and China, saying it was their doing over the last six decades. 'We are getting warnings about Pakistan-China collaboration, when this has been going on for 60 years,' he said. Jaishankar also slammed the Opposition leaders' visits to China 'when the Chinese were issuing stapled visas to people from Arunachal Pradesh and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's meeting the Chinese Ambassador in the days of the Doklam standoff eight years ago. 'I did not go to China for Olympics, secret agreements; I went to make India's stand clear on terrorism, trade restrictions and de-escalation,' he said. 'The very people who are cautioning us on China are the people who allowed 3G and 4G to come from China. It was this government which ensured Made in India 5G.'
