Why Aberdeen's loss-making business model can give them edge on rivals

Brighton owner and professional gambler Tony Bloom buying a 29 per cent stake in the Gorgie outfit for £9.86m and a consortium comprising the 49ers Enterprises and American tycoon Andrew Cavenagh completing their £75m takeover of the Govan giants has sent ripples throughout the game in this country.
Whether Aberdeen can build upon their historic Scottish Gas Scottish Cup triumph over their Parkhead rivals at Hampden back in May and add more silverware to their trophy cabinet has, despite the arrival of no fewer than four new players at Pittodrie in recent weeks, scarcely merited a mention.
The announcement this week that chairman and majority shareholder Dave Cormack and director Tom Crotty have promised to plough in £8m of fresh investment has hardly given those who occupy boardrooms across the land palpitations either.

That is, even on these shores, a trifling amount in the modern game. Plus, the vast majority of it will be spent building an indoor pitch at their training ground.
The hour-long Red TV interview with Aberdeen-born, United States-based software entrepreneur Cormack that was posted on You Tube on Wednesday, however, was fascinating and suggested that more good times may well lie ahead for the north-east outfit in the forthcoming campaigns. Even if he did say, 'We're making a decision to lose £3m or £4m operationally a year as a club'.
Much has been made about how data analytics will drive Hearts' recruitment efforts now that Bloom, who has enjoyed great joy with Brighton down in England and Royal Union Saint-Gilloise over in Belgium using such methods, is a major player behind the scenes.
Hopes are high among the Jambos support that Jamestown Analytics, the company owned by the mathematics whizz who is known as The Lizard on the poker circuit, will be able to unearth a few outstanding players for affordable fees in the transfer market who can enable them to compete with larger and richer rivals.
It was a route which Rangers decided to go down back in 2023 when they overhauled their scouting department, brought in a raft of new personnel to key positions and moved to a data-led operation which relied more heavily on video analysis than had previously been the case.
But Cormack, who stated that he expected Swedish manager Jimmy Thelin to bring in around eight new recruits in total before the summer window closes on August 31, pointed out that is exactly the approach which Aberdeen have been taking for some time now.
It is a strategy which has enabled them to turn a profit on their incomings and outgoings and to spend far more money on transfer fees and player wages than they would be able to if they relied on gate receipts, sponsorship money and television income alone because they are confident they will recoup their outlay and more further down the line.

The year before that they banked over £3m from Ylber Ramadani (Lecce) and Ross McCrorie (Bristol City) being offloaded. Three years ago, the sales of Calvin Ramsay (Liverpool) and Lewis Ferguson (Bologna) swelled their bank balance by over £7m. A couple of seasons before that, Scott McKenna (Nottingham Forest) and Sam Cosgrove (Birmingham City) exited for over £5m.
'We have got a squad planning and recruitment team in place now which I think will stand us in good stead,' said Cormack. 'Everyone is talking about these analytics and algorithms which everybody is using. But we have been using those for five or six years now. Miovski, Ramadani, a number of players, have come through that. We have tapped in to that.'
The Aberdeen chairman expects winger Topi Keskinen, who featured prominently for Finland at the European Under-21 Championship finals in Slovakia this summer and scored goals in draws with the Netherlands and Denmark, to be the next recruit to bring in a sizeable return on their investment.
'There is a reason we have paid £1m for Topi,' he said. 'Listen, in the last five years we have managed to sell just over £20m worth of players. That is significant income for us. The trick is balancing that with being competitive.
'Our scouting needs to be excellent so we can unearth and get value from players. But people want to come to Aberdeen now because they know they will get an opportunity to move on to a bigger club.'

Cormack has come in for fierce criticism from supporters and media commentators – including from this correspondent – during the six years that he has been chairman despite the huge sums of money which he has personally ploughed in to his boyhood heroes.
Before Thelin was brought in last summer, he had a poor track record when it came to appointing managers. The team's results at home and abroad had often left a great deal to be desired because of his bad choices.
But he is hopeful that Graeme Shinnie and his team mates can improve further despite having to deal with European group stage football once again next term – something which they struggled badly with when they got into the Conference League two years ago – and play against revitalised Hearts and Rangers teams.
'It's always good to have competition,' he said. 'It's never a worry, it's a challenge. This multi-club environment is an approach other clubs (Hearts, Hibernian and Rangers) are taking is new. But I think it is important we focus on what Aberdeen are doing. You will never get all of your recruitment right. The industry average is 50 per cent. We need to be at 70 to 80 per cent.
'Listen, if I fall under a bus tomorrow I don't want to leave the club in a poor financial position. It has to stand on its own two feet. But we're making a decision to lose £3m or £4m operationally a year as a club. What we have got today is a player trading environment which is allowing us to punch above our weight in terms of recruiting and player wages.'

It was a narrow 1-0 win over the Championship side as Johnny Kenny proved the difference maker Johnny Kenny took a first opportunity to further impress Brendan Rodgers as Celtic made a winning start to their pre-season schedule. The Irish striker made top-team strides in the second-half of last term having returned from a loan spell at Shamrock Rovers and netted before the end of term at Aberdeen. ‌ Rodgers is on the lookout for an established hitman with Kyogo Furuhashi yet to be replaced after leaving in January. ‌ Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah and new signing Callum Osmand are in the mix, but Kenny took his opening chance to shine with a sharp finish which defeated Queen's Park. The 22-year-old's strike was enough to see off Sean Crighton's Championship hosts on a drab night at Lesser Hampden. Despite a multitude of recognised stalwarts missing, Celtic 's starting line-up included familiar faces with a near first-pick midfield trio as Arne Engels and Luke McCowan lined up alongside skipper Callum McGregor in the engine room. A minute's applause for Lisbon Lion John Clark was held just prior to kick-off and Kenny, who led the line at the outset, made his mark for Rodgers after 20 minutes with an instant finish into the top corner from kid Mitchel Frame's cutback. Celtic's senior stars had a grip of the game during that opening period, but the lead was just the one at the interval as Queen's, without managing to test Ross Doohan in the visitors' goal, managed to limit the chances created by Rodgers' men. ‌ With their work for opening night, the experienced boys got the second-half off as Rodgers changed an entire outfield line-up at half-time and kids took over. Stephen Welsh, who spent last term in Belgium with Mechelen, assumed the armband from McGregor to assume the mantle of guiding light. Rodgers' youngsters didn't hang around. They kept their team's control with Thomas Hatton having a brilliant strike tipped onto the bar by home keeper Calum Ferrie. ‌ The Queen's No.1 also made a great save from sub Samuel Isiguzo leaving Kenny's counter as the scoreline difference. Captain set the standard Callum McGregor didn't hide the fact he was hurt badly by the Scottish Cup Final loss to Aberdeen just a few hundred yards away at the National Stadium. Just as clear is his desire to roar back even stronger and, with no international football commitments anymore due to Scotland retirement, the skipper has been there from day of pre-season to lead the charge into the new campaign. McGregor is the heartbeat of Celtic and, just turned 32, the vibrancy is still there. ‌ The eager way he chased around in this first pre-season game with the wind blowing and the rain pelting and demanding the ball shows that no occasion is too small for the biggest influence on the unit. If Celtic are to have another big season, McGregor is almost certain to have delivered once again on a week-to-week basis for Rodgers. Midfield up and running Arne Engels and Luke McCowan arrived at basically the same time last summer and the pair enjoyed fruitful first campaigns with the champions. Nonetheless, Rodgers will be looking for the duo to kick-on again this term and build on their initial progress. Both individuals are laden with talent for a killer pass and also an eye for a goal, which both displayed early in the contest. The Scots star having an effort blocked and the Belgian curling one just over the crossbar. Engels is full of classy touches, McCowan has impish skills, with both willing to do a shift. ‌ The pair took dunts in the first-half. McCowan got a bang on the inside of a knee in a collision and Engels was clipped on the ankle, but no issues. Rodgers may be looking to add in the middle of the park and there's Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo also in the reckoning for spots in the key area alongside their captain. But Engels and McCowan have done enough so far to suggest they can really kick on and it promises to be a massive season for the pair. ‌ Does Auston have trust? Auston Trusty was the one senior starter in the backline and much is expected from the American international this term. Having arrived for a fee of £6 million, the stopper displayed top-class glimpses in Champions League encounters away against Atalanta and Dinamo Zagreb. However, there were sloppy performances there, too. Notably against Dundee at Dens Park and Liam Scales took the shirt back. With a season of Celtic experience under his belt and turning 27 next month, the door is open for Trusty to step through and he has the tools to do it with height and pace key parts of his make up. ‌ He's also a goal threat at set-plays and had a goal bound header cleared away the line here. Hayato Inamura signed a four-year deal just prior to the game kicking off, but the USA star can make the position his own alongside compatriot Cameron Carter-Vickers. Go Johnny go Johnny Kenny returned from his loan spell at Shamrock Rovers in the middle of last season and caught the eye with some of his efforts. The 22-year-old got off the top-team mark at Aberdeen and could have also an Old Firm winner on his CV had Daizen Maeda spotted him free with the last kick of the game at Ibrox 10 days prior to that. Kenny started as the central striker in this opening game and he looked sharp with good physique. ‌ The Irish attacker's finishing instinct was there as he gobbled the chance to strike the opener. Callum Osmand has signed and it's clear that Rodgers wants to add another top-class striker with Kyogo Furuhashi not replaced in January. Adam Idah is in the mix, too, but Kenny has the potential to offer an option. Regardless of the nature of the contest, he'll be delighted to get off the mark and show his prowess quickly. ‌ Youth gets a chance Rodgers handed opportunities to plenty of kids with many of the recognised top-team not ready to return. There could be spaces for them in the top-team squad if they continue to develop. The manager has shown a willingness to try them. Mitchel Frame has tasted it and started wide left, Dane Murray has been talked up by the boss and he was alongside Trusty at the start. Jude Bonnar and Colby Donovan got starts and more youngsters made their way from the bench. Queen's Park offered a good test. Sean Crighton's Championship side didn't give them any hand-outs. Ross Doohan will have to wait with Kasper Schmiechel and Viljami Sinisalo ahead of him in the goalkeeping ranks, but he will have enjoyed his return to the Celtic goal before Josh Clarke took over in the second-half. More such as Sean McArdle had their chance after the break and, although it is tough going breaking into the side when the competitive stuff starts, the grounding they are getting is invaluable.

He said: "I spoke to my old manager at Peterborough, Darren, and he spoke so highly of him [Fernandez], and he has the potential to be anything he wants to be, I really believe that."

Given the choice, it's the Moroccan frontman the Ibrox club should be looking to offload this summer. Dessers has his flaws, but his numbers have been good for back-to-back seasons now and I just don't believe Igamane is capable of being a 30-goal striker for the Ibrox club. If Lille or any club are willing to pay upwards of £10million for a boy who cost £1m a year ago, Rangers should be snapping their hand off. Igamane could score a dozen goals for them in the French league and they'll be satisfied. But that strike-rate won't cut it at Ibrox. No, he can produce some moments of magic with nutmegs, flicks and tricks. When it comes down to it, though, I can't imagine there would be too many of his team-mates devastated to see him go. Playing that role in the team demands a discipline and reliability that he just doesn't have at this stage of his career. Dessers often frustrates the life out of Rangers fans but I wouldn't be chasing him out the door. I'm sure the club will be looking to bring in a new hitman and it could be that he's not willing to hang around if he's not the main man. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview But, for me, selling Igamane for eight figures is a no-brainer. He's not the only one Rangers should be looking to move on, though. The spotlight in the last few days has been on the players brought in, and quite rightly so. We all wondered when Rangers would start to get business done — it seemed like they were waiting until July 1, and their new financial year. In the past week they've definitely gone out and spent money and that's what the supporters have been anxiously waiting for. It's guys going the other way that has to be part of the model, though. Igamane has a value and that's why the club are inviting interest, as they should be. But there are others who have a huge question mark over their futures. Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell spent last season on loan at Birmingham City and I'd be amazed if they weren't shown the door now. I'd imagine Robin Propper has played his last competitive game for the club too after some unimpressive performances in a light blue jersey. I'd think these boys will be moving on. I'm then looking at some of the ones who played throughout last season. What does the future look like for James Tavernier, for Ridvan Yilmaz, for Jefte? 6 John Souttar probably comes into that category, too. He hasn't signed a new contract and Rangers seem to be looking at alternatives for that position at centre-back. I just think there are going to be a lot of outs as well as ins and it's going to be a completely new-look Rangers team come the big kick-off. The Panathinaikos Champions League qualifier on July 22 is going to be absolutely massive when it comes around. It's still relatively early in the transfer window but that tie is looming large on the horizon, as is the start to the league season. Martin will be eager to get faces into his squad sooner rather than later. The boys will need time to settle into life in Glasgow because it's not always easy. It's a huge club and that can be a shock to the system for a lot of players. Daunting, even. The group heads off to St George's Park for their training camp next week and the manager will feel it's important to have as many as possible signed up by then. Conor Coady has been linked for weeks and his name hasn't gone away. Israeli striker Dor Turgeman has been talked about as a replacement for Igamane. The new Rangers boss has been going after a lot of players he knows and that makes sense. He's obviously got a certain style of play he'll look to implement so it'll speed up the process if he's able to bring in signings who have worked with him in the past and know what's required. There has to be the right balance, of course. Emmanuel Fernandez is in from Peterborough and at 23 he's a relatively young defender Martin will be looking to work with and develop. 6 John Souttar and James Tavernier are two players with 'uncertain' futures Credit: Willie Vass I notice his move described as an 'undisclosed fee' and that usually means it's a higher price than the paying club want in the public domain. There has also been talk of a loan deal for Nasser Djiga, someone who joined Wolves for £10million not so long ago.
