WWDC 2025 rumors: Apple may have muted rollout for June event
Last year's edition was dominated by the announcement of Apple Intelligence features but also saw updates to a suite of operating systems by the tech giant.
The week will kick off with a keynote event on Monday, June 9 and be followed by a "Platforms State of the Union." Apple said in a press release that there will be over 100 technical sessions as well as group and one-on-one lab sessions for developers.
Here's what you need to know about the rumors surrounding WWDC 2025.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing a modest rollout of artificial intelligence features, targeting WWDC 2026 to make a larger splash.
Gurman wrote in the Power On newsletter that the most significant AI announcement this year will be the opening of Apple's Foundation Models to third-party developers.
9to5Mac noted that software announcements made last year rolled out slowly and AI upgrades to Siri and Swift Assist never materialized.
Gurman reported that Apple is prioritizing features that it is confident will launch in the fall.
Gurman also reported that Apple appears set to add a centralized gaming app in the next iOS update.
He indicates that the app will be preinstalled with the update and will be a place for users to launch games, find new titles, view leaderboards and communicate with other players.
"The new app will serve as a Game Center replacement, and is more ambitious," Gurman wrote. "But it's unlikely to shake up the industry."
Apple launched Game Center in 2010, but it has since been relegated to a back-end service that is a part of the Settings app.
Apple acquired game developer RAC7 in May, according to Digital Trends.
Apple will be changing its iOS naming system and will announce the shift at WWDC, according to Gurman.
The company will move from numbering operating system updates sequentially to numbering them by year in a manner similar to the way car models are identified.
Under this system Apple appears set to roll out iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26 and visionOS 26. Gurman reported that the iOS will see a major design overhaul along with the name change.
Gurman further reported that the company has settled on Tahoe as the identity for its Mac operating system.
The Cupertino, California-based company themes Mac operating systems around important sites in California. The current operating system is named after the Sequoia National Forest and previous versions have been tied to Yosemite National Park and Big Sur.
The keynote for WWDC 2025 takes place at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on Monday, June 9 at 1 p.m. ET.
It is keynote is set to be streamed on Apple TV, the Apple YouTube page and on apple.com.

Apple is still trying to overturn the ban on the Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor
Apple is making another attempt to appeal the trade ban that forced it to remove the blood oxygen sensor from its smartwatches, Reuters reports. The company was forced to remove the feature in 2024, following a decision from the International Trade Commission (ITC) in 2023 that banned sales of the Apple Watch for violating health tech startup Masimo's patents. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard new arguments from Apple and Masimo's lawyers on Monday over the legality of the original ITC ban. Apple's argument is that the fact Masimo was developing its own smartwatch when Apple released the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020 — the first of the company's wearables with a blood oxygen sensor — shouldn't be enough to justify the ban. Masimo disagrees. The appeals court has heard the company's arguments before, and even briefly paused the trade ban in December 2023 while the ITC considered Apple's request for a longer pause. Ultimately, the ITC ruled in Masimo's favor and denied Apple's request. Apple removed the blood oxygen sensor in 2024 so it could restart sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the US. The companies' fight goes beyond just the blood oxygen sensor — Masimo's smartwatches were, ironically, found to infringe on Apple patents — but clearly Apple is hung up on the feature. The company's blood oxygen sensor was never as accurate as the pulse oximeters used in a doctor's office, but it was part of a fairly comprehensive suite of heart health features on the smartwatch. It's entirely possible Apple wants to reintroduce it in its watches as part of an even more ambitious health feature down the road.

Apple's top AI executive Ruoming Pang leaves for Meta, Bloomberg News reports
(Reuters) -Apple's top executive in charge of artificial intelligence models, Ruoming Pang, is leaving the company for Meta Platforms, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Pang, manager in charge of the company's Apple foundation models team, will join Meta's new superintelligence team for a compensation package worth millions of dollars per year, the report added. Meta and Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The development comes as tech giants such as Meta aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of AI. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reorganized the company's AI efforts under a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs, Reuters reported last week. The division will be headed by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of data labeling startup Scale AI. He will be the chief AI officer of the new initiative at the social media giant, according to a source. Last month, Meta invested in Scale AI in a deal that valued the data-labeling startup at $29 billion and brought in its 28-year-old CEO Wang. Sign in to access your portfolio
