LSU earns most-watched sweep in best-of-three MCWS era
LSU's championship series against Coastal Carolina at Omaha, Neb., was the most-watched two-game sweep in the 10 occurrences of the best-of-three format, according to Sports Media Watch.
The two games averaged 2.5-million viewers on ESPN, slightly down from an average of 2.82-million viewers for last year's three-game series between Tennessee and Texas A&M.
Sunday's Game 2, when LSU earned a 5-3 victory, had an average of 2.8-million viewers, slightly behind last season's Game 2 that averaged 2.92 million in a contest that was not a clincher.
The 2025 Men's College World Series final series ranked No. 4 in viewership since the best-of-three series started in 2003. LSU has been involved in three of the top four final series in that span with the 2023 title over Florida ranked as the most watched with an average of 2.86-million viewers.
The entire Men's College World Series this year averaged 1.2 million viewers, the third largest since 2011.

August 3 - The Minnesota Twins essentially wiped the slate clean before their series at the Cleveland Guardians, trading almost 40 percent of their roster. Two games and two losses into the new era, they remain undaunted by the challenge. Minnesota right-hander Jose Urena (0-0, 5.40 ERA) will take the mound Sunday afternoon in the finale against Cleveland left-hander Joey Cantillo (2-1, 4.14). "Some of us now get a second chance with this," Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers said. "I don't think we're going to go out there and play terrible baseball. Even last year, the (Detroit) Tigers sold some guys off and got hot and snuck into the playoffs. Anything can happen." The Guardians took the first game 3-2 on a Kyle Manzardo walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning, then won the second 5-4 after Bo Naylor doubled in Jose Ramirez in the eighth. After dealing all five of their late-inning relief specialists, the Twins were forced to throw Kody Funderburk and Pierson Ohl into the fire -- and paid for it as they both suffered losses. "I liked a lot of what I saw, but at some point, you've got to find a way to score another run," Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said. Urena's recall from Triple-A St. Paul epitomizes what the Twins are going through. The 33-year-old already has pitched for the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers this season and was available on short notice to travel to Cleveland. Right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson originally was slated to start on Sunday, but Minnesota's massive series of transactions prompted Baldelli to juggle his rotation. "We'll be better once we get on the other side of it, but I ain't going nowhere." The Guardians aren't going away, either -- in terms of the postseason race. The perennial All-Star third baseman is batting .312 with nine homers and 21 RBIs and 27 runs scored in his last 25 games. August 3 - Anthony Volpe is expected to start at shortstop on Sunday afternoon when his New York Yankees conclude their three-game series against the host Miami Marlins. Miami has won the first two games of the series. Entering this weekend, Volpe, 24, led the majors in errors with 16, and his .957 fielding percentage is down 15 points from last season. But Volpe also is tied for fourth among major league shortstops in home runs with 17. Volpe had a monster game against Miami on Friday, going 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, three runs, two RBIs and two steals. "Clearly, he's gone through some struggles," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Volpe, a first-round pick (30th overall) by New York in the 2019 MLB Draft. "But Anthony is super tough, and I think he's wired for this." Sunday's pitching matchup features a pair of 27-year-old right-handers from the Dominican Republic: New York's Luis Gil against Miami's Edward Cabrera (4-5, 3.35 ERA). A lefty hitter, Marsee was San Diego's sixth-round pick out of Central Michigan in 2022. The Marlins acquired him and three other minor leagues in the May 2024 trade that sent three-time batting champion Luis Arraez to the Padres. At Triple-A Jacksonville this year, Marsee led the minors with 47 steals, getting caught 13 times. He also hit 14 homers in 98 games with an .817 OPS. The Marlins moved starting right fielder Jesus Sanchez to the Houston Astros at the trade deadline on Thursday, and that opened a spot in the lineup.
