Patch, mosaic and more: Liverpool pay tribute to Jota in friendly

Yahoo26-07-2025
The friendly match between Liverpool and Milan held this Saturday (26th) provided another opportunity to pay tribute to Diogo Jota.
The English club took to the field wearing a patch in honor of the Portuguese player who died earlier this month in a car accident.
The match took place in Hong Kong and, shortly before kickoff, Liverpool fans created a mosaic displaying the Portuguese player's initials alongside the number he wore for the Anfield team.
A club legend, Kenny Dalglish was present at the stadium and laid a wreath near the stands where the mosaic was displayed.
Once the match began, Rafael Leão scored one of the goals and also paid tribute to his former Portuguese national teammate by showing the number 20 with his hands.

What Alexander Isak's agent said about transfer as Anfield rumors swirl

Alexander Isak's agent recently suggested that the Newcastle United forward is close to taking "the next step" in his career, and it was rumored that one of his representatives was at Anfield on Monday. Liverpool played a double-header against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, and the Reds won 4-1 and 3-2 with two different squads. The Anfield Wrap claimed that one of Isak's agents was at Anfield, sending social media into overdrive. Isak has expressed a desire to leave Newcastle this summer, but the club rejected Liverpool's $145 million offer. Newcastle has since sent an official bid worth $105 million to RB Leipzig for striker Benjamin Sesko, which has sparked mass speculation that Isak may join Liverpool. READ MORE: Harvey Elliott sees Liverpool exit option open up after nightmare injury blow READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak boost, Will Wright joins, Bilbao double action The 25-year-old is represented by Universal Twenty Two, and one of his agents, Gonzalo Gaitan, recently discussed his client and a potential transfer. "We are already studying and analyzing all options, and we may be close to finalizing the next step for the player," Gaitin said, via Saudi Arabian outlet Arriyadiyah. Isak helped Newcastle end a 70-year wait for silverware last season and scored in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the League Cup Final. Despite achieving hero status, Isak expressed his desire to leave Newcastle in July. Newcastle was in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike earlier this summer, with ambitious plans to partner him with Isak. However, Liverpool hijacked the move and signed Ekitike for an initial fee worth $92 million. Despite signing Ekitike, Liverpool then switched its attention to Isak. The striker missed Newcastle's preseason tour due to a reported thigh injury, but it's believed he's pushing to join Liverpool. After making a formal offer, Liverpool has yet to submit an improved bid for Isak. However, should Leipzig accept Newcastle's offer for Sesko, then a record bid could force the club to part ways with Isak. Due to uncertainty surrounding his future, Isak has been training alone since Liverpool's opening bid. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe hasn't spoken to Isak since the offer was made, but sent him a clear message. After Newcastle's preseason tour in Asia ended, Howe condemned Isak's behavior and warned him that isolated training may continue once the squad returns to England. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe told the Daily Mail. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal." Howe also distanced himself from the transfer saga because he focused on Newcastle's preseason tour. "Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home," he said.

Marcus Rashford has done his part in pre-season. Now Barca need to do theirs

Barcelona are heading back home from their pre-season trip to Japan and South Korea with plenty of encouragement for the new campaign, Marcus Rashford's positive start among them. The 27-year-old played a part in each of Barca's three matches on tour but enjoyed his brightest moment in Monday's final fixture, scoring his first goal for the club in a 5-0 victory over Daegu FC. Having featured in Barca's first two pre-season fixtures as a left winger from the bench, Hansi Flick used him as a central striker for the first time (also from the bench) and the Englishman provided a powerful finish from Eric Garcia's cross. El primer gol de Marcus Rashford 🔵🔴🦁 — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona_es) August 4, 2025 However, there wasn't much of a celebration to mark a strike that put Barca 5-0 clear over vastly inferior opponents — a common theme in last Sunday's 3-1 win over Vissel Kobe and Thursday's 7-3 victory against FC Seoul, in which Rashford assisted for Ferran Torres. Rashford has not set the world alight, but he has been decent. His performances will certainly convince fans (and Flick) that he can play a role for the team this season. That role, however, looks to be a backup one for now. Advertisement Barca don't play their first La Liga game until August 16, and a lot can happen before then, but in their three warm-up matches so far, it has been clear to see who Flick favours at the moment. Only four Barca players started each of those games: Joan Garcia, Alejandro Balde, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. The last two are without question Flick's go-to options in attack, with Robert Lewandowski's central spot the one that seems more up for grabs. But Barca's backroom staff see Torres, for now, as the better option for Lewandowski's replacement in a central role. Torres scored two goals against Seoul and was rested in the last game against Daegu for load management reasons, according to the club. That would leave Rashford's best immediate chance of La Liga minutes as understudy to Raphinha on Barca's left wing. That is where Flick's staff currently envisage him playing primarily — although they also know he's versatile enough to operate in other areas. Rashford does look refreshed and he seems willing to embrace the challenge of fighting for minutes in one of the most stacked attacks in Europe. Judging by recent comments (made in the mixed zone after Barca's win over Seoul), he does not appear to be worried by potentially limited gametime this term. 'How many goals do I think I will score? A hundred!' he joked with a laugh on his face when asked about the expectations set on him. 'Just as many as I can, really. I know it's going to be different, playing in a new country and a new league, but I accept the challenge. The quality in training is really high, the intensity is as well. There are a lot of good players here, of course I knew them before coming here. 'I can play in different positions, score goals from all of them. It's just about being able to score goals from different areas and create that threat. Hopefully, we can go one step further than last year and win the Champions League as well.' Rashford's new team-mates, meanwhile, have been impressed with his attitude. According to sources at Barca who wished to remain anonymous as they did not have permission to comment, he has been very careful about starting on the right foot with every individual in the dressing room. Jules Kounde, who sat next to him on Barca's flight to Japan, said the Manchester United loanee 'reminds me a bit of myself'. Advertisement Speaking in another post-match mixed zone, the Frenchman added: 'He might be a bit of an introvert at the start, but it's normal. He's getting more and more comfortable, and every team-mate received him very warmly. He is very happy, you can see it when he is on the pitch smiling all the time.' On the pitch, Rashford has not tried to overdo things or prove a point too quickly. In his first appearance, in 33 minutes from the bench against Vissel Kobe, he tried to combine as much as possible with Lewandowski — even in chances when he could have tried a shot. Four days later against Seoul, he came on at half-time and did the same with Torres, when the Spain international was operating as a No 9 alongside him. 'He wants to do things well, is very humble and wants to respect every individual in there,' a dressing-room source told The Athletic. 'And on the pitch, he has shown the right commitment.' On that subject, one particular move stood out during the pre-season tour. In the 64th minute of the match against Vissel Kobe, Barcelona lost possession and the hosts broke out on the counter. Rashford (circled red in the screengrabs below) was caught reasonably far from the action. But as soon as he saw the Vissel Kobe right-back trying to overlap, he tracked back to his own box with no hesitation. This is the sort of work rate that is non-negotiable for Flick, and those around the backroom staff say they were pleased with what they saw. So far, so good, then? Not quite. Wth their La Liga opener 11 days away, Rashford is still not registered as a Barca player. Until he is registered, he will not be eligible to play in any competitive fixtures. If he is not registered by the time the transfer window closes, Barca would not be able to register him until it opens again in January. Barca sources insist they are confident they can register each of the players they need to before the 2025-26 season starts. Besides Rashford, they still have to register new signings Joan Garcia and Roony Bardghji, as well as the returning Wojciech Szczesny. Gerard Martin, who previously did not require registration as he was a youth player, also needs to be registered now as a first-teamer. Advertisement The club's main priority is to register Joan Garcia before anyone else, because with Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury, back-up Inaki Pena is currently their only goalkeeper eligible for La Liga. 'I'm not worried, I think it's something for the club to sort out,' Rashford replied to reporters when asked about his registration after the Seoul match. 'I believe they are going to get it sorted, so I just focus on the training and being ready for the start of the season.' Rashford has done his part in pre-season, now it's on the club to do theirs.

Fantasy Premier League: The players to avoid selecting for Gameweek One

A new season of Fantasy Premier League is upon us, with players new to the Premier League and those who have moved clubs among the hottest properties. However, for every prime FPL target, there is also a long list of possible signings who should be avoided — either because they are unlikely starters for their clubs or offer little in fantasy points terms. Which of the hundreds of available assets should be nowhere near your Gameweek One squad? The Athletic has got you covered! Each season, I run a single FPL team where, each gameweek, a panel vote on the transfer and captaincy decisions. It used to be run by 50 managers but now a group of 100 people contribute. This pre-season, I've collated their first drafts for a series on my YouTube channel, comparing player ownership within that pool to ownership across the millions worldwide who play FPL, and have created a shortlist of those options who are in over 10 per cent of the experts' teams. Advertisement There were several highly-owned players in the game overall who had little to no representation among their squads. The headline name here is Newcastle striker Alexander Isak (£10.5m), who is owned by around one-third of managers overall but was a differential among my panel. As we all know, the Swedish striker wants to leave Newcastle, with Liverpool bidding for him, and his situation has a chance of lingering on until the opening weekend of the season, from August 15 to 18, when the transfer window will still have more than two weeks to run. Add into the mix a tough run of opening fixtures for Eddie Howe and company and it's ultimately best to avoid Isak, despite his 29 goal involvements in 2024-25. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) of West Ham, formerly a midfielder in the game, has been reclassified as a forward for this season, which seemingly hasn't dented his appeal, with the England international racking up an ownership of nearly 20 per cent of FPL managers as things stand. But Bowen will receive fewer points for each goal he scores this season in his new position, which could hinder his output, despite West Ham starting their season with a trip to one of the promoted sides, Sunderland. As one of the most supported clubs globally, any new faces at Manchester United are generally heavily backed in FPL, with this summer's midfield arrivals Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) no exceptions at 17% and 11% ownership respectively. However, none of my 100 experts selected this duo in their Gameweek One squads following an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign for United, despite a change of position for Cunha from forward to midfielder. There's plenty of competition for places in the United attack and it's not exactly clear the role each player will be given by coach Ruben Amorim, with both having been talismans for Brentford and Wolves respectively last season. We can't expect the same level of returns from them at a new team and in a different system, and with captain Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) set to hog set-piece duties, including penalties, the routes to points for both Mbeumo and Cunha will be more limited. Advertisement Fernandes is also an avoid at the start of the season due to a price hike and a deeper-lying position in United's new-look midfield almost guaranteed. Then there's the fact they play Arsenal and Manchester City during the first four gameweeks. New Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) is the second-most-owned defender in the game at the time of writing, having been acquired by almost 27 per cent of managers. However, he faces stiff competition for minutes from Conor Bradley (£5.0m), so his starting position is far from guaranteed. I definitely prefer their defensive team-mate Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) at the same price point as Frimpong, and the expert managers agree with me. Arsenal's new signing Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) has been hot property since his addition to the game, with 24 per cent of managers snapping him up. However, there are no guarantees he starts over Kai Havertz (£7.5m) up front when Mikel Arteta's team travel to Old Trafford in Gameweek One. Gyokeres is certainly one to keep an eye on for potential addition from Gameweek Two onwards, especially with promoted Leeds visiting the Emirates Stadium in that round. He may be on Arsenal's penalties, too. Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) has been a popular acquisition in early drafts, mine included. The impending departure of Son Heung-min (£8.5m) could see Solanke on penalties this season but he missed both games of Spurs' Asian tour with an ankle injury. Plenty of FPL managers will be keeping an eye on his availability across the remainder of pre-season, with an opener at home against promoted Burnley kicking off a favourable run of early fixtures. Indeed, Spurs' start to the season has helped entice 26 per cent of managers to select their new midfield recruit Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m), who looks to be great value at first glance. However, I'm yet to be convinced to invest in him, given he managed just nine goal involvements in 31 starts last time around for West Ham. Better-value picks should emerge around that price point. Advertisement Up at Manchester City, Omar Marmoush (£8.5m) is among their most-owned attacking players for Gameweek One, alongside newcomer and fellow midfielder Rayan Cherki (£6.5m). However, with strength and depth once again in forward areas for the deposed four-in-a-row champions, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what minutes their assets will see because of manager Pep Guardiola's infamous rotation. It's thought that Phil Foden (£8.0m) is fully fit and set to capitalise on the summer departure of Kevin De Bruyne from City's midfield, but I'd stick with forward Erling Haaland (£14.0m) if you are intent on a City attacking player for Gameweek One. Speaking of rotation and new signings at City, Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m) has been selected by around a quarter of managers since joining from Wolves, but again this is a risky pick. Clean sheets could be hard to come by for City in the opening three gameweeks, with trips to Wolves and Brighton either side of a home game against a bolstered Spurs now under Thomas Frank's management. The theme continues when it comes to picking a City goalkeeper, with new arrival James Trafford (£5.0m) providing competition for Ederson (£5.5m). It's certainly enticing that we could have a top six goalkeeper for £5m in the game, but we would need clarity from Guardiola over who is his number one before investing in Trafford. One player who made my first draft despite being a massive rotation risk is Everton forward Beto (£5.5m), thanks to an enticing price point. Everton have solid opening fixtures, plus that new stadium to entertain their fans in, which means the stars could align for Beto early on. There's hope he plays in a front two alongside new signing Thierno Barry (£6.0m), but they could well share minutes under David Moyes. With plenty of managers eyeing up a Gameweek One Bench Boost, any starting forwards with good fixtures around this price could be hard to ignore. Will the punt be worth it?
