Savannah Bananas player faceplants on CNN after brutal backflip attempt
The Savannah Bananas player — known as Coach RAC — embarrassed himself in shocking and hilarious fashion Thursday, faceplanting live on a segment of 'CNN News Central' after attempting a backflip.
Cruz stepped into an open area in the show's studio to attempt the stunt, but he didn't get enough lift on his flip and landed with a thud on the floor, as one onlooker in the studio softly exclaimed, 'Oh Jesus.'
An awkward silence ensued for the next couple of moments as a stunned Cruz sat on his knees and eventually allowed an incredulous smile.
'That, what you just saw there, is a brand-new twist on America's favorite pastime,' said CNN host John Berman as Kate Bolduan stood silent, trying to hold back her laughter as she held her face.
The clip instantly went viral on social media, with dozens cracking jokes at the absurd moment.

'Not the same footing as that natural gas,' quipped one user on X.
'That's gotta be so embarrassing,' wrote another. 'Flopped like a banana.'
'Should have played dead,' said a third.
Others questioned whether or not the moment was staged to go viral, but the shocked reactions of the CNN hosts and Cruz himself made it clear that the flopped flip was very real.
Cruz, 26, is a former Nationals prospect who played his college baseball at Biola University before joining the Bananas, the uber-popular exhibition team that has risen to prominence in the last few years.

The player was on CNN to promote the team in a segment called 'Going Bananas.'
Cruz later explained the incident in a video on his Instagram account, which has 755,000 followers.
'They say all press is good press, huh? Well, you've probably seen the video. Your boy is bouncing around the internet like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert,' said Cruz, who went on to explain that the CNN crew asked him backstage if he had 'any tricks up his sleeve.'
Cruz told the producers he'd do a backflip — he's known for back-flipping while catching fly balls in Bananas games and said he has done 'tens of thousands of backflips in my life.'
'I had zero reason to doubt my abilities,' Cruz said. 'Anyways, I'm standing on the stage, I get the countdown, it's time. I send the clip. Next thing I know, I am on the floor and I'm rattled.'

Tom Holland reveals new Spider-Man suit in 1st look at 'Brand New Day'
Marvel fans just got their first official look at Tom Holland's new Spider-Man suit for the upcoming movie "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. In a video released Saturday morning, Holland steps out in a redesigned costume featuring brighter red and blue colors and a larger spider symbol across the chest. The reveal came one day after Holland teased the update on Instagram for National Spider-Man Day with the caption, "Something brand new is coming…" The next morning, the full look dropped with the message, "Are you ready? – 7.31.2026." In addition to Holland's return, Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The film marks Ruffalo's first major appearance in a Spider-Man movie and comes 14 years after he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in "The Avengers." Plot details for "Brand New Day" are still under wraps, but the title and costume suggest a fresh chapter for Peter Parker in the MCU.

Trump weighs in on American Eagle's Sydney Sweeney ad
President Donald Trump is entering the national debate surrounding American Eagle's Sydney Sweeney ad. In a Newsmax interview Friday, Aug. 1 with host Rob Finnerty, Trump was asked about the "Euphoria" actress starring in the clothing retailer's fall 2025 denim ad campaign that some critics saw as a veiled attempt to endorse eugenics. Eugenics is a highly controversial (and discredited) set of beliefs that the human population can improve or advance itself through selective breeding. "Sydney Sweeney, an actress was in an ad for blue jeans. The ad is doing very well, it's very popular. The jeans have sold out. Does America need to see more ads like that and maybe fewer ads with people like Dylan Mulvaney on the cover?" Finnerty asked, referring to the controversial 2023 Bud Light campaign starring the transgender TikTok star which elicited criticism from certain groups. Trump addresses Diddy pardon decision, but questions remain Trump said that "advertising's a very funny thing," telling Finnerty that "I've done ads where I thought they were lousy, and they turned out to be iconic. And then I've done some that I thought were beauties that were going to be fantastic and they weren't so good, so to each his own." Before addressing his thoughts on advertising, Trump told the conservative cable host earlier in the interview that "I think the Dylan Mulvaney ad was perhaps the most unsuccessful ad in history. It knocked $35 billion off the value of a certain company if you know what I'm talking about." Trump continued: "(The Mulvaney ad) was one of the great disasters of all time. I would say that's probably the most unsuccessful ad, worst ad ever." It is unclear what exact $35 billion valuation the president is talking about, but sales for Bud Light – owned by Anheuser-Busch – tanked after the backlash began. American Eagle breaks silence on Sydney Sweeney jeans ad controversy Why is the 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' ad sparking backlash? The Sweeney ad has been the subject of both online praise and anger for over a week. On July 23, the brand launched the new campaign starring Sweeney, which American Eagle originally described as "a return to essential denim dressing," with Sweeney sporting 1970s-style flare jeans paired with a denim jacket. In one of several videos for the campaign, Sweeney, clad in a denim-on-denim fit, dabbles in some word-play, telling cameras: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." "My jeans are blue," Sweeney said in the video. Each promotional video ends with the tagline, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans." The Trump comments aired the same day that American Eagle broke its silence on the backlash and doubled down in an Instagram post following days of discourse about the Sweeney ad blitz. "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way," the statement read. "Great jeans look good on everyone." Contributing: Anna Kaufman, Nicole Fallert

Released Yankees Hurler Has One-Word Closing Remark For New York
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It sure was an unceremonious ending for Marcus Stroman with the New York Yankees. With two months to go on his two-year, $37 million contract, Stroman was released by the Yankees on Friday. The Yankees will eat the final $6 million on the deal, and the righty will have the ability to sign with any team of his choice for the stretch run. Stroman was brought to New York to be the steady No. 3 starter he was for two years on the Chicago Cubs. But he never developed any consistency, compiling a 4.69 ERA in 39 outings as a Yankee. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 25, 2024 in New York City. The Mets... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 25, 2024 in New York City. The Mets defeated the Yankees 9-7. MoreBeing dumped by a team with playoff hopes in the middle of the season is never fun, though, and Stroman didn't have much in the way of sentiment for a goodbye to the Bronx Bombers. On Friday, as the Yankees were battling the Miami Marlins in an eventual 13-12 loss, Stroman posted an Instagram story of the inside of a private plane, with the one-word caption, "Adios." It was a brief parting message, and one appropriate for the situation. Though Stroman never got off the ground in New York, he's had an excellent career to this point, posting a 3.79 ERA over 270 total appearances and making two All-Star Games, one with the Toronto Blue Jays and one with the Cubs. Stroman is only 34, but his stuff took a big step back in the first half of this season, so he'll have to prove it was just a blip on the radar to keep his career going for a few more years to come.
