Texas A&M is still 'in play' for 2026 5-star safety out of Mississippi

USA Today3 days ago
Texas A&M is still in pursuit of one of the top safety prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, even after landing four-stars Chance Collins and Tylan Wilson this month, as five-star Bralan Womack is set to announce his commitment on August 21, and according to one source, the Aggies remain in the mix despite two teams standing out late.
Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and defensive back coach Jordan Peterson have been two of the hottest recruiters in the country this summer, building strong relationships with every linebacker and defensive back commit in the 2026 class.
On Monday, 247Sports insider Tom Loy provided more insight on Womack's recruiting journey, stating that while Auburn and Ohio State enter next month with the "most confidence" to land the standout DB, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko and Jay Bateman are still clearly in the mix and work overtime behind the scenes.
"All four schools remain firmly in the mix. Coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman have Texas A&M in play, as discussions continue behind the scenes."
Ohio State has received a 247Sports crystal ball prediction to land Womack, which would not be surprising at all, given the program's past success in developing safety prospects, including future first-round NFL draft selection Caleb Downs, who is entering his final season with the Buckeyes. Womack reportedly models his game after Downs, so Ohio State will likely remain the slight leader in his recruitment heading into August.
Still, after landing four-star running back KJ Edwards and four-star safety/linebacker Tamarion Watkins, who were previously favored to commit elsewhere, Elko and his staff should never be counted out.
According to 247Sports, Womack is currently positioned as the 13th-ranked prospect, the No. 1-ranked safety prospect, and No. 2-ranked prospect in Mississippi.

'He's been raised on watching tape,' Sark explains Week 1 game planning for Arch Manning

Putting the Week 1 game plan together must be one of the toughest jobs of the year for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. There is the unknown of new quarterback Arch Manning's first start. There's his reaction to the hostile crowd at Ohio State's famous Horseshoe. There's a new defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. Sark talked about the challenges on Fox Sports' the Herd with Colin Cowherd Thursday. The biggest challenge might be figuring out what new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia might do. The longtime DC during the New England Patriots dynasty and former Detroit Lions head coach will bring a new scheme to Columbus. "We're going against a really good defensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, which I don't think people are talking a whole lot about." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd "Putting a plan together that we feel good about also gives Arch a little bit of freedom to get us in and out of some things that as looks present themselves in the game, because there's so many unknowns, I think is going to be critical. And he's more than capable of doing that. You know, the guy's been raised watching tape of Eli, Peyton, his dad and his grandpa. We're going to feel good about that. And he's got great composure and he's been in some fires with us already. So we'll feel good about it." The environment and assignment will be tough enough. But they also want Manning to get a taste of checking out of a look at big moments. "Do we want to major in him having to audible on the road? That's a dangerous thing to do on the road. But we're going to give him the opportunity to do those things, especially in some critical moments." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire. Bill Belichick thankful to be coaching UNC, highlights team growth at ACC Kickoff

What type of player does Bill Belichick like to coach? Larry Fedora fizzled out. Mack Brown didn't work during his second stint. This offseason, the UNC football team went big with its latest head coaching hire: 8-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick. Despite never previously coaching at the college level, Belichick's NFL resumé speaks for itself. He turned the New England Patriots from a decent franchise into the NFL's most-feared dynasty, developing the greatest football player to walk this earth in Tom Brady. Belichick is no stranger to the Tar Heels, though. Belichick's dad, Steve, was an assistant coach in Chapel Hill from 1953-1955. At the ACC Kickoff event on Thursday afternoon in Charlotte, Belichick spoke about the opportunity to come back and coach college football, digging in on player development. 'I've always wanted to coach in college – and I'm glad to have the opportunity to be at a great school like Carolina," Belichick said in front of a packed media room. "The great thing about working with college players is the growth and development that I've seen with them. Developing players is really what coaching is. We take great pride in that. A Carolina player is a player who wants to be a good football player, who wants to work hard, who wants to make a commitment towards improving on a regular basis, both training and team execution on the field." UNC hired Belichick back in December 2024, so he's now going on month seven working with his new players. Several people are expecting a championship-caliber Tar Heels team in 2025, but it all depends on how Belichick develops his guys. The first opportunity for North Carolina fans – and the entire college football world – to see offseason development pay off will be Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. UNC hosts TCU in the final game of Week 1, on ESPN, under the lights.
