Four women killed in serperate collisions over the weekend
A woman in her 70s died while cycling in Co. Clare in a crash involving a tractor at Toonagh, Tulla, 10km outside Ennis on Saturday, shortly before 1 pm.

The road was closed for technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators. There were no other injuries reported.
Another fatal collision occurred later on Saturday at Curraghgraigue, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, at 3 pm, in which a female pedestrian in her 20s was killed.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, received a medical assessment at the scene. Gardaí have stated that investigations are ongoing and have appealed for witnesses.
A woman in her 60s, also a pedestrian, was killed on Saturday evening outside Ashbourne, Co. Meath, after being struck by a car on the Dublin Road between Nine Milestone and Coolquay at around 7.10 pm.
The woman, named locally as Theresa Morgan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was removed to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, for a post-mortem. The male driver, as well as the passenger of the car, both in their 20s, were taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bernadette 'Bernie' Cranley, 82, from Lifford, Co. Donegal, died when a Toyota Vitz she was driving collided with another car on the notorious A5 road between Omagh and Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone, on Saturday afternoon.
The other driver, a woman in her 70s, was taken to hospital and is understood to have serious injuries.
The number of road deaths so far in 2025 is now at 65, a decrease of eight from last year's figure for the same period, of 73.
Ms Cranley's fatal crash was not recorded on the Garda database as it took place north of the border. A fatal collision has occurred on average once every two days since the year began.

Man jailed after claiming five-year-old girl made call that breached safety order
The woman told Tallaght District Court she was getting the children ready for school when her phone rang on July 2, 2024 A repeat offender who breached a safety order by calling his former partner and tried to blame a five-year-old girl for dialling the number has been jailed for three months. The man, who is in his 30s, had pleaded not guilty under Section 33(1) of the Domestic Violence Act 2018 after the court heard the woman was put in fear by the phone call, which came while she was at home with their children. The woman told Tallaght District Court she was getting the children ready for school when her phone rang on July 2, 2024. 'I was afraid. I just left the house with the kids,' she said. 'Usually when he rings, something bad happens. I felt it was unsafe to stay.' She said she didn't answer the call, but that it was enough to put her in fear. Under cross-examination from defence solicitor John O'Leary, she accepted she didn't know what the caller had intended to say, as she hadn't picked up. Garda Shane McCabe told the court that the complainant attended the Garda station on the evening of July 2 to report a possible breach of a safety order. He said she appeared agitated when giving her statement. Garda McCabe also told the court that the accused had six previous convictions, including assault, driving without insurance, and three prior breaches of safety and protection orders. The accused told the court he had been in a car when the call was made. He said he had given the phone to a child in the car and claimed she must have dialled the number. He told the court he had previously deleted the complainant's number but was using a new phone and had inserted a SIM card that still contained the number. He said he hadn't realised it was saved and only discovered the call had been made after checking the dialled numbers on the phone when the child returned it to him. Prosecuting solicitor Tom Conlon, for the DPP, suggested the explanation was too convenient. 'So it just so happened that a five-year-old took your phone and made a call - coincidentally - to the very person you're barred from contacting under a court order?' he asked. Mr Conlon also asked whether the accused had given that explanation to Gardaí at the time. 'I think I did, yeah,' the man replied. Mr O'Leary, in mitigation, said his client had been in an on-and-off relationship with the complainant for many years and 'loves her to bits". Counsel said the man was getting on well in custody, working in the prison kitchen, and wanted to put the matter behind him. Judge Shalom Binchy said there was nothing in the defence's mitigation to suggest the accused was addressing his issues with violence towards women. 'It's clear from his previous convictions that there's a difficulty in relation to violence and his attitude towards women,' she said. 'And not only that - he's now blaming a five-year-old girl for this breach.' She noted that the case had been contested and that the accused had three prior breaches of protection orders. She sentenced him to six months in prison, with the final three months suspended for 18 months. Two of three men who appealed jail terms for carrying weapons as part of ongoing feud have sentences upheld
A claw-hammer, a hurley, a slash-hook handle and three sledgehammer handles were seized by Mallow gardaí in the investigation of a feud between two families which 'sullies the name of Mallow and frightens members of the public'. Three men who were prosecuted for having this stash of weapons in a car on March 18, 2023, appealed against jail terms imposed on them at Mallow District Court. However, the sentences were affirmed, with the exception of one man having the last month of his sentence suspended. Detective Garda David Forsythe said at Cork Circuit Appeals Court on Tuesday that gardaí received an anonymous call from a concerned member of the public that members of the O'Brien family in Doneraile were on their way at lunchtime that day as part of a planned attack on the home of the O'Flaherty family on Connolly Road in Mallow. Gardaí intercepted an orange BMW being driven towards River Valley, Mallow, Co Cork, and because of a smell of cannabis they indicated personal searches together with a search of the car were going to be carried out. The five occupants of the car cooperated, as weapons, including the hammer, hurley and implement handles, were found in the car. Det Garda Forsythe said there was no sign of the feud between the families abating and recently the conflict broke out in a physical altercation at Mallow courthouse, which disrupted court proceedings for a period and spilled out on the street. 'From a Garda point of view, it is quite time-consuming trying to keep a lid on these things. It is quite serious for people living in Mallow — it sullies the name of Mallow and frightens members of the public. 'Gardaí received a call that day that members of the O'Brien family in Doneraile were going to launch an attack on the O'Flaherty family in Mallow. 'The evidence is that it is still ongoing,' Det Garda Forsythe testified on Tuesday. Barristers Brian Leahy and Liam M O'Brien asked for the sentences to be suspended or community service orders imposed instead of the jail terms, stressing there was no evidence against them causing any damage to the O'Flahertys' property and that their only offence was of being in possession of the implements. However, Judge Boyle affirmed the six-month sentences under appeal by 37-year-old Kevin O'Brien and 49-year-old Richard O'Brien — both of Ballydineen halting site, Doneraile, Co Cork. In respect of the five-month sentence appealed by 21-year-old Kevin Barry, of Inchnagree, Buttevant, Co Cork, Judge Boyle suspended the last month of the sentence. All three appellants were then taken into custody to commence their sentences on the single charge of possession of the weapons on the day in March 2023.
