Cardinals place outfielder on IL with appendicitis, but there's a bright side

The post Cardinals place outfielder on IL with appendicitis, but there's a bright side appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The last week had been going swimmingly for the St. Louis Cardinals. They finished off the Chicago White Sox, took a series from the Cincinnati Reds, won the first two games of their divisional showdown with the Chicago Cubs, and occupied a National League Wild Card slot. Their luck is turning a bit, however, as we near the weekend. The team placed breakout designated hitter/catcher Ivan Herrera on the injured list with a hamstring strain on June 20 and ended up splitting its series with the Cubbies.

Before the Cards fell 3-0 against the returning Shota Imanaga and NL West-leading Chicago — getting outscored 11-0 the last two days — they had more disappointing business to address. Former top prospect Jordan Walker is also heading to the IL. He has appendicitis, which is especially unsettling considering he recently returned to action after sustaining wrist inflammation at the end of May. There is at least some encouraging news to come out of the overall unfortunate situation, though.
The 23-year-old right fielder does not require surgery and was able to return home on Wednesday, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Hence, Walker's recovery time will be much quicker than it could have been. Nevertheless, this is another setback for a player who has yet to meet expectations.
Walker, the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, is batting only .210 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and a .562 OPS through 55 games this season. He has admittedly endured plenty of adversity during his tenure with the Cardinals, struggling to gain consistent playing time over the last two and a half seasons. Both the organization and fans desperately hope the 6-foot-6 talent can still emerge as a productive hitter in St. Louis.
But first, he must get healthy. Jordan Walker is currently taking antibiotics as he works toward rejoining the Cards (44-38) at some point shortly. Meanwhile, the team is focused on getting back on track when it battles the Cleveland Guardians (40-39) on Friday night.

The 3M Open's Best Contenders

BLAINE, MINNESOTA - JULY 27: Matt Kuchar of the United States acknowledges the crowd after holing ... More out on the 18th holeduring the third round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities on July 27, 2024 in Blaine, Minnesota. (Photo by) Heavy rains batter TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, MN, halting Wednesday's Pro-Am and further softening an already wet course. The saturated fairways, receptive greens, and thick rough at TPC Twin Cities will favor long hitters even more this year than in the past. Previous winners include Tony Finau, Cameron Champ, and Matt Wolff. Last year's winner, Jhonattan Vegas, ranks 41st in driving distance on the longer side of the PGA Tour. The 3M Open features its strongest field in years, with World No. 11 Maverick McNealy, No. 22 Sam Burns, No. 24 Chris Gotterup, and No. 29 Sungjae Im all in the lineup. Sam Burns may seem the obvious favorite as both a long hitter and solid putter, but he has played the tournament just twice in the past five years, finishing T-12 and T-32. McNealy, meanwhile, has a stronger track record at the event, with a 3rd-place finish and a T-16. Chris Gotterup enters on a hot streak after winning the Scottish Open and finishing third at The Open Championship. While he has two previous appearances at the 3M Open without a top-25 finish, his power off the tee makes him well suited to the softened course. However, back-to-back high-pressure weeks could lead to fatigue. PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 03: Keith Mitchell of the United States plays a shot from a ... More bunker during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at Pebble Beach Golf Links on February 03, 2024 in Pebble Beach, California. (Photo by) Keith Mitchell has had a lukewarm season but currently ranks 13th in strokes gained off the tee. A rare visitor to Minnesota, Mitchell needs a strong performance to stay on track for the FedEx Cup Playoffs in Memphis. While his putting has been cold, a few hot rounds could make him a legitimate contender. Hometown favorite Franky Capan III returns to the field. He made the cut in a previous 3M Open appearance and, following a strong 2024 season on the Korn Ferry Tour, expectations are high for him to do the same or better this year. When choosing a potential winner at this year's 3M Open, lean heavily on driving and putting stats. Birdies are a must. With wind expected to pick up on Saturday and Sunday and the course playing soft, performance off the tee will be critical.

Ohtani homers in 5th straight game, Freeman drives in 2 runs in the 9th as Dodgers beat Twins 4-3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani matched a franchise record with a homer in the fifth straight game and Freddie Freeman drove in two runs with a two-out single in the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Wednesday. Freeman hit a sinking liner to left field that eluded a diving Harrison Bader and scored Mookie Betts and Ohtani, setting off a wild celebration. Ohtani hit a solo homer to center in the first, his National League-leading 37th of the season. It marked the seventh time in Dodgers history that a player has homered in five consecutive games. Ohtani joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in that club. The Twins scored two runs in the eighth off the Dodgers bullpen, one day after scoring seven runs off Los Angeles' pen in a 10-7 victory. This time, the Dodgers got the better of the Twins bullpen. Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow was dominant, allowing three hits and one run with 12 strikeouts in seven innings. The right-hander was making his third start since returning from a shoulder injury. Minnesota's Chris Paddack had a strong outing, allowing four hits and one run in six innings with eight strikeouts. Royce Lewis, an native of Orange County, California, tied the game at 1 with a solo home run off Glasnow in the third inning. He added a double in the fifth and a walk in the two-run eighth, finishing 2 for 2. Tommy Edman lined a run-scoring, bases-loaded single to right field in the seventh to score Freeman, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates opened the eighth by walking the first three batters he faced. Alex Vesia entered and got Willi Castro to hit into a double play, scoring one run, and pinch-hitter Bader knocked in another run with an infield single. Key moment Minnesota's Griffin Jax got the first two outs in the ninth before Betts singled and Ohtani was walked intentionally. Jax walked Esteury Ruiz, loading the bases for Freeman. Key stat Glasnow struck out 12 batters for the first time since June 9, 2024, when he fanned 12 against the Yankees. Up next Twins RHP Zebby Matthews (1-2, 6.26 ERA) makes his sixth start against when Minnesota hosts Washington on Friday. Dodgers RHP Emmet Sheehan (101, 4.41 ERA) will face the Red Sox in Boston on Friday. ___ AP MLB:

Minnesota's Frankie Capan part of 3M Open's deepest-ever field

The deepest field in the history of the 3M Open has materialized this week. Some players are fighting just to keep their status, and some are riding a career-best run, like Haotong Li and Chris Gotterup. Li's fresh off playing in the final round on Sunday at the Open Championship, while Gotterup won the Genesis Scottish Open and then was third at the Open. "It's been a lot of just, you know, physically and mentally draining," said Gotterup. "Playing good comes with that. I'm happy to be here and excited for the week." At 18th, Maverick McNealy is the highest-ranked player in the field at a tournament where he's played well. "That's the first time I've had that way, but it's just affirmation I think we're on the right track, and my team's having me work on the right things and excited to try to win this golf tournament this week," said McNealy. "I'd love to have a chance late on Sunday. That's what we play for and that's a lot of fun." Tom Hoge grew up winning a bunch of Minnesota tournaments. The Fargo native is in good position to make the FedEx Cup playoffs, but wants more from his game. "Yeah, I would like it to be in a little bit better state," said Hoge, who sits 37th in the FedEx Cup. "It's nice to come back to a place where I'm familiar with. I feel like hopefully that can get things to click a little bit more and get a little more focused and ready to go for a nice push to end the season." And then there's Frankie Capan of North Oaks. The Minnesotan, a rookie on the tour, has struggled and is in danger of losing his card. "I think it's easy. You know, you get in a little bit of a rut and you don't have your best results and you think, you know, the world's ending," Capan said. "But at the same time, just tweak a few things here and there, I think we're on the right track."
