
Tenement refurbishment completed in Glasgow's West End
Karen Shaw, director of development and asset management at WSHA, said: "I am delighted to see the completion of the major repair work at Park Road.
"To maintain and repair historical listed tenemental buildings can be expensive and challenging, particularly in mixed tenure blocks.
(Image: Supplied) "But by obtaining owner buy-in through regular engagement and consultation, and with funding support from Glasgow City Council, we have been able to greatly improve the condition of the building, preserve its heritage, and extend its lifespan for the residents and future generations to live in and enjoy."
The block, located within the Woodlands Conservation Area, is a C-listed building featuring stonework in the style of Alexander "Greek" Thomson.
The project included re-roofing, chimney head repairs, stonework restoration, and replacement of rainwater goods.
Work was carried out by EBS Construction Limited, with Mackie & Co. overseeing the project as contract administrator, principal designer, and quantity surveyor.
The scheme was completed on time and within budget in March, at a total cost of £342,746.
WSHA covered 41.77 per cent of the cost, totalling £143,165.
Each owner in the building received 50 per cent funding support through the Private Sector Housing Grant from Glasgow City Council.
Ms Grace, WSHA tenant and resident at 92 Park Road, said: "The quality of workmanship for the renovation is exemplary and the attention to detail is notable.
"The close decoration is of a very high standard, as is the pointing on the sandstone. I'm delighted with the result."
James Mackie, managing director of Mackie & Co., said: "The challenge in this project was to return the tenement to a finish in keeping with the conservation area and return properties to a weather-tight condition so that they require only routine maintenance over the next 40 years."
Kathleen Leitch, private sector housing grants officer for GCC, said: "The refurbishment of the Park Road properties is exemplary of the kind of partnership working the council is keen to promote in working with the owners of mixed tenure pre-1919 tenements to help preserve the built heritage within Glasgow."

The initiative, which aims to thank millions of tourists for visiting the island and raise awareness of the 'importance of tourism' to the economy, has seen around twenty billboards distributed throughout Mallorca, using positive and welcoming messages in English and German. According to local news site Majorca Daily Bulletin, Javier Vich, the president of the federation, said: "We cannot allow a radical minority to damage the work carried out over many years by so many people who have made tourism their way of life... Tourism cannot be the punching bag for all the structural problems of this community." Javier added that every month during the high season, a staggering 235,000 salaries are paid in sectors linked to tourism. This includes workers in the transport, catering, culture, leisure and hospitality sectors. The hotel boss went on to argue that Spain risks suffering a slowdown in bookings during the summer season, and more and more Brits flock to rival destinations like Greece and Turkey - which 'welcome tourists with a red carpet'. Even Morocco - which has long struggled to attract high levels of tourism, has seen its visitor numbers surge in recent months. "We must also be aware of their value," Javier warned. "Mallorca has been, is and must continue to be a hospitable land..." While the campaign may be well received by self-serving hotel bosses, that cash in on tourism, it's safe to say the news won't go down well with locals demanding change. And still - despite the alarming number of protests and graffiti that have been smeared across Spain - British expat Sandra Laurie, who has lived in Spain for nine years, says Brits should continue visiting Spain. "Local businesses, restaurants, and shops have built their success on welcoming tourists from all over the world," she exclusively told the Mirror earlier this year. "If you have a trip planned—don't let the headlines deter you. The Costa del Sol and other popular destinations are buzzing with life. The beaches are packed, the pueblos are alive with energy, and both locals and tourists are soaking up the sun, relaxing, and making the most of everything Spain has to offer." Of course, Sandra says being a 'respectful' visitor is key to being welcomed to the sunny country.

Nationalisation of train operators ‘tackling deep-rooted problems'
The Cabinet minister made the claim ahead of c2c becoming the second operator to be nationalised by the Labour Government on Sunday. The operator, which runs services between London Fenchurch Street and south Essex, has been owned by Italy's state-owned rail company Trenitalia since 2017. The Department for Transport (DfT) said c2c is 'consistently rated one of the best performing operators in the country'. It achieved a passenger satisfaction rating for the overall journey of 89% in the most recent research by watchdog Transport Focus. This was the joint sixth best performance out of 22 operators. Ms Alexander said: 'Whether you're shopping in Lakeside or walking along the beach in Southend-on-Sea, from this Sunday you will be able to get there on a train service run by the public, for the public. 'Public ownership is already tackling deep-rooted problems we see on the railway that's led to spiralling costs, fragmentation and waste.' Customers of a nationalised train company can use their tickets on another publicly-owned operator at no extra cost during disruption. Ms Alexander added: 'A unified network under Great British Railways (GBR) will take this further with one railway under one brand with one mission – delivering excellent services for passengers wherever they travel.' GBR is an upcoming public sector body that will oversee Britain's rail infrastructure and train operation. Nationalised services are currently the responsibility of DfT Operator. South Western Railway became the first operator brought into public ownership by the Labour Government in May. It joined Northern, TransPennine Express, Southeastern and LNER, which were nationalised under the Conservative government because of performance failings by the former owners of those franchises. Rob Mullen, managing director of c2c, said: 'We are proud of the reliable and high level of service we offer our passengers, consistently being rated as one of the best performing operators in the country. 'We now have a golden opportunity to collaborate with the wider family of publicly-owned operators, sharing our successes and best practice, but also learning from a wide range of different and diverse operators who have already benefited from public ownership, to drive even more improvements for the people and places we all serve. 'A unified and focused railway can deliver more for our communities, including better growth, jobs and houses.' Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, welcomed the nationalisation of c2c but expressed frustration that staff cleaning its trains and stations will still be employed by private company Bidvest Noonan. He said: 'The injustice of outsourcing must end so all railway workers can reap the benefits of public ownership and greedy private contractors can no longer extract obscene profits from the industry. 'Our members working for Bidvest Noonan deserve decent pay and the same terms and conditions as their colleagues, and we will fight tooth and nail to achieve it.' Paul Nowak, general secretary of trade union body the TUC, said: 'We need a fully integrated national rail service that works for passengers and the rail workforce. 'That means tackling outsourcing in the sector.' The next operator to be nationalised will be Greater Anglia on October 12.
