‘If cyber crime was a country, it would be the third largest GDP'

Economic Times06-06-2025

When it comes to cyber crime, the numbers are stark:
ADVERTISEMENT It currently costs the world $9.2 trillion
On average, it takes a threat actor 72 minutes to gain access to user data, and that number is going down
About 20% of data breaches today are as a result of insiders
As the world's largest security company, Microsoft tracks 7,000 password attacks each second. That's 600 million attacks a day
The number of attackers (such as unique nation state actors and financial crime actors) Microsoft is tracking has gone from an average of 300 every day to 1,500 increase. These were some of the eye-opening statistics Microsoft's CVP of Security, Vasu Jakkal, underlined in her revelatory keynote address on day two of TiEcon 2025.TiEcon 2025, the world's largest tech conference, and the biggest in its 32-year history, took place this May in the heart of Silicon Valley. The conference brought together 3,000-plus entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders from around the globe. With over 180 speakers and this year's theme, 'AiVerse', the conference showcased the transformative power of innovation. Under the leadership of TiE Silicon Valley President Anita Manwani, TiEcon continues to drive a culture of transformational change, fostering new ideas, connections, and opportunities for the next wave of global entrepreneurs.
In keeping with the AiVerse theme, Jakkal underscored the importance of security as a foundation for AI. Because Microsoft has a $20 billion security business that processes 84 trillion signals every day, it is uniquely positioned to observe emerging threats such as wallet abuse, word prompt injections, and large language model (LLM) poisoning. Other highlights from the keynote included:
How agentic AI can bolster securityAgentic AI, designed to autonomously make decisions and accomplish given goals with minimal human supervision, is already addressing challenges in healthcare, education, transportation, and security. In the near future, both individuals and organisations could have agentic AI in the form of unique, interactive personas. Think an agent that helps with deep research for your startup, an analyst agent that converts raw data into insights, a chief staff agent that manages schedules every day, or even a home companion agent that can tutor children and plan family trips. As such agents become digital colleagues and thought partners, the question to ask is: what risk can their prevalence pose to us? This is where critical security considerations come in. The questions to ask are:
What is your identity strategy?
What permissions do such agents have?
How are you protecting your data?
Do you have the right data leakage policies
If agents are working across teams, companies, or homes, what are the privacy considerations? As agents become pervasive, human defences will need to scale at the speed and scale of AI. Which is why we need to think about agents for security, and AI for security in general.
In 2023, Microsoft began focusing on security-focused AI by launching the GPT-4-based Security Co-Pilot. It takes open source models, grounds them on the trillions of security signals and data in its repository, and refines them on security skills. The result is faster and more accurate threat prevention.

How agentic AI can address gaps in security
Around 4.6 million jobs in security remain unfulfilled globally. In this context, AI agents can enable potential talent to develop required competencies.Security today is largely reactive. Agentic AI agents can predict and stop novel attacks before they happen. As an example, they can identify data risks when an organisation puts data structures in place. They can autonomously apply identity and access policies so the right people can have access to the right things at the right time, for the right reasons. And such policies can be dynamically adjusted.
ADVERTISEMENT In workplaces, such agents can also be part of SaaS AI apps or custom enterprise offerings such as the Azure AI Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, or Google Vertex.
What more Microsoft is doing to secure the future of AI
In November 2023, Microsoft launched the Secure Future Initiative, a multi-year cybersecurity effort that shapes how it designs, builds, tests, and operates products and services to meet security standards. Apart from operating the largest security initiative in the world, Microsoft ties executive compensation to security and has 14 deputy Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) who oversee security engineering teams. Employees across the company are also taken through a security skill academy.
ADVERTISEMENT 'We review our security updates with Satya [Nadella, CEO] every other week and send a report every week. And we have a meeting with the board, of course, every quarter. The first meeting starts with security,' Vasu Jakkal shared.
'Security is a team sport. It deeply matters and turbocharges our product flywheel of defence, because we use all these learnings from security to build better products.'
TiEcon 2025, which ran from April 30 to May 2, featured eminent tech executives as other grand keynote speakers. ICYMI, here are the takeaways from Satya Nadella's discussion on what makes a generational company in the AI age.

Microsoft claims its AI Diagnostic Orchestrator outperformed 21 doctors, got 85.5% of diagnoses right

Microsoft has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) system that it says can diagnose some of the most difficult medical cases more accurately and at a lower cost than human doctors. The system, called the Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO), was tested using case studies published by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). These cases are known for being particularly complex and usually involve teams of specialists. According to Microsoft, the AI got the correct diagnosis 85.5 per cent of the time, compared to just 20 per cent for a group of experienced doctors from the US and UK. As more people turn to digital tools for medical advice, the company says it sees over 50 million health-related searches every day across its services like Bing and Copilot. To test the system, Microsoft created a new challenge called the Sequential Diagnosis Benchmark (SD Bench), based on 304 real NEJM cases. The cases were turned into step-by-step scenarios, where the AI or a human doctor could ask questions or order tests before making a diagnosis. Each test had a virtual cost, helping to measure both accuracy and how wisely resources were used. Microsoft tested several top AI models, including OpenAI's o3, Claude, Gemini, Llama, and DeepSeek, both alone and as part of MAI-DxO. The orchestrator system works by combining different models to act like a team of doctors, sharing ideas and narrowing down possible diagnoses. The best results came from using MAI-DxO with OpenAI's o3 model, the tech giant stated. Reportedly, the results showed that the AI not only diagnosed more cases correctly but also did so with fewer and more cost-effective tests than the doctors involved in the study. However, Microsoft admitted the research has its limits. The tests focused on rare and complex cases, not everyday health problems. Also, the doctors were not allowed to use any support tools like books or the internet during the test, unlike in real-world situations where such resources are often used. Other tools developed by the company include RAD-DINO, which helps improve radiology processes, and Dragon Copilot, a voice assistant for doctors. Microsoft says it is now working with health organisations to test its AI in real clinics and hospitals. Before any wider use, the technology will need to meet safety standards and get approval from regulators.

Microsoft releases first preview of Windows 11 25H2 update for these users

Microsoft has released the first version of this year's Windows 11 update called the 25H2. As announced by the company, the 2025 update is now available to Windows insiders. Announcing the new build in a blog post, the company said 'Today, Windows 11, version 25H2 became available to the Windows Insider community, in advance of broader availability planned for the second half of 2025.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Get ready for a reset of the 36-month support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions and the 24-month lifecycle for Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation editions,' it further added. The blog states that the 25H2 update installation package is 40% smaller than the previous version. Another improvement coming with the version is the Windows shared servicing branch. This capability applies the same technology used for the monthly update process to the annual feature updates. 'This process is called "feature updates via servicing," and the updates are implemented through enablement packages (eKB). An eKB is an update package that helps update a device to the next version of Windows with a single restart that reduces downtime.' The blog post reveals that Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 share the same source code. How to install the new 25H2 build As mentioned earlier, the first 25H2 version of Windows 11 is available for Windows insiders. Those interested can enroll in the Windows Insider Program and join the Dev Channel. Once enrolled, head to Settings, choose Windows Update, and allow the latest updates to download and install. After the usual beta testing, Microsoft will officially began rolling out the Windows 11 24H2 update to all users on October 1.

Inspired by Warren Buffett's investment mantras? These 3 stocks make up 66% of Bill Gates' Foundation's $45 billion portfolio — check list

Bill Gates stands amongst the world's richest individuals. (AI image) With wealth surpassing $100 billion, Bill Gates stands amongst the world's richest individuals. His philanthropic contributions to the Gates Foundation, established in 2000, have exceeded $60 billion, demonstrating remarkable generosity. The investment portfolio of the Gates Foundation combines technological expertise and wisdom from a legendary investor's influence. Bill Gates' personal investment holdings, which include substantial Microsoft shares (MSFT 0.60%) and various strategic investments, have largely funded these charitable contributions. Beyond Microsoft, Gates adopts a value-oriented investment approach, that appears to be influenced by his close associate and former Gates Foundation trustee and contributor, Warren Buffett , according to a report by The Motley Fool. The Foundation's investment strategy reflects both Gates and Buffett's financial philosophies, featuring a concentrated selection of the topmost investments. As a result, three exceptional stocks constitute approximately two-thirds of the foundation's trust fund holdings. We take a look at them. Berkshire Hathaway (18.4%) Warren Buffett remains a significant contributor to the Gates Foundation, with his contributions since 2006 exceeding $43 billion. His donations specifically comprise Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway. He retains company control through a strategic approach of converting high-voting Class A shares to Class B shares prior to donation. The Foundation operates under specific conditions set by Buffett, requiring annual grant payments equivalent to his donation amount plus 5% of trust assets. Despite these requirements, the Foundation has retained substantial Berkshire Hathaway holdings, possessing 17.1 million shares valued at approximately $8.3 billion at the first quarter's end, the The Motley Fool report says. A significant portion of Berkshire's worth is derived from its portfolio of publicly traded equities and cash holdings. Its total liquid investments amount to approximately $631.8 billion. Buffett maintains more than half of this amount in Treasury bills or cash whilst searching for valuable investment opportunities. However, due to Berkshire's substantial size, only a limited number of companies remain as feasible investment targets. Microsoft (31.1.%) When Microsoft was established in 2000, Bill Gates initiated donations of company shares, consistently increasing his contributions over time. Despite utilising shares to support grants, the foundation has accumulated a significant position in the organisation. By the end of quarter one, the trust maintained approximately 28.5 million shares, valued at over £14 billion as of late June. The company's shares have reached unprecedented levels recently, driven by its achievements in artificial intelligence (AI). Following a £10 billion investment in OpenAI in early 2023, Microsoft's Azure emerged as the premier cloud computing service for developers seeking access to advanced AI models. The company has demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving 33% growth in its latest quarter. Additionally, Microsoft executives indicate that demand continues to exceed supply capacity, suggesting sustained growth prospects for the foreseeable future, the report said. Microsoft's enterprise software division has experienced significant growth through AI integration. The company's Microsoft 365 commercial segment has achieved substantial revenue increases, driven by expanded user base and enhanced pricing structures. The organisation has introduced specialised AI-driven assistants, known as Copilots, across various platforms including GitHub and Dynamics 365, enhancing business software functionality. Additionally, their Copilot Studio enables organisations to develop customised AI assistants using their proprietary data. These initiatives have resulted in robust revenue expansion and increased profitability through improved margins. With Azure's continued prominence in Microsoft's strategy, this positive trajectory is expected to continue. Waste Management (16.2%) The Gates Foundation trust's investment portfolio largely mirrors the value-investing principles that brought success to Warren Buffett. Waste Management stands out as a prime example of this approach. Since 2002, Waste Management has remained a consistent component of the portfolio. This long-term investment has shown steady value appreciation over time, with minimal share disposals. At the conclusion of the first quarter, the trust maintained ownership of 32.2 million shares, currently valued at approximately £7.3 billion. The company's appeal lies in its substantial competitive advantage. Its unrivalled network of landfills creates a barrier that competitors cannot overcome, given the stringent permitting requirements for new facilities. This position enables Waste Management to generate revenue from smaller waste collection firms requiring access to its disposal sites. Additionally, its operational efficiency benefits from economies of scale, enabling optimised collection routes and enhanced operational performance. These factors contribute to the company's robust profit margins. The company's surplus funds have enabled its expansion through acquisitions, notably Stericycle, now operating as WM Healthcare Solutions. During the latest investor presentation, the leadership team projected £50 million in additional revenue through cross-selling with Stericycle, complementing the £250 million in operational efficiencies. The leadership anticipates yearly revenue expansion of approximately 9%, alongside improved EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) margins through 2027. This financial performance will generate substantial free cash flow, enabling further strategic acquisitions, dividend increases, and share buybacks. The current enterprise value stands at roughly 15 times the projected EBITDA for the upcoming 12 months, suggesting reasonable valuation. This presents a viable investment option for those seeking dividend growth companies with robust free cash flow potential, the Motley Fool report added.
