‘Grownups get spring break too': Nearly 400,000 to breeze through OIA this weekend

Yahoo16-03-2025
This weekend is set to be the busiest travel days at the Orlando International Airport as Spring Break gets underway. As the temperature increases, beaches get more crowded, and the airport gets busier than usual; you know it's time for Spring Break in Central Florida.
'We've flown out of Orlando several times before. It's always about the same—a little crowded, but manageable,' said Shayne Grant, a traveler at OIA.
The Orlando International Airport is bracing for the flow of tourists from all over the country looking for an early taste of summer in the Sunshine State. 'Grownups get spring break too, so we are doing it,' said Rachel Hughes while waiting in line to check her bag with her airline company.
According to AAA, Florida has three of the top five spring break destinations this year - Miami in 4th place, Fort Lauderdale in 2nd, and Orlando, of course, is in first place. 'It was amazing. It was our first time in Orlando… We had a blast! We would definitely come back,' who was on her way back to Arizona.
According to AAA, theme parks and beaches are the driving force behind the numbers. 86% of Floridians will be taking at least three days off this spring break season – Rachel Hughes and her family, all Orlando residents, are certainly included in that number.
'We are going to wait it out; we have plenty of time to stand in line with everybody else. What else can you do? Keep your good humor, be positive, it is what it is,' said Hughes.
AAA also discovered that people are spending more this year on spring break. A domestic round trip costs $820, nearly 10% more expensive than last year.
Still, airport officials tell us roughly 400,000 people are expected to travel alone and out of the airport this weekend.

Letters to the Editor: As Disneyland turns 70, readers share their earliest memories of their visits

To the editor: In reading this article, I feel compelled to cast my vote for Disneyland's first decade as the best of times for those of us who were able to enjoy it ('What was the greatest Disneyland era? We look back on 70 years at the happiest place on Earth,' July 17). Shortly after I turned 5, my parents took the family to Disneyland just two weeks after its opening in 1955. Even in its early days, it fit the definition of 'magic kingdom' to a T. While I was watching a parade, Zorro himself (Guy Williams) stopped his horse right in front of me and scrolled a familiar 'Z' in the air with his famous saber. He then dismounted and signed my autograph book after having his merry band of characters do just the same. The icing on the cake came when Walt Disney himself suddenly appeared, patted me on the head and told my parents 'nice kid.' I suppose it helped that I was wearing an official Davy Crockett coonskin hat. To this day, I feel like Disney royalty as a result of his kind words. Those of us who remember what an 'E' ticket is are a dwindling horde, but even after all these years, I still remember that day and the kind pat on the head from the man himself. Stephen Lash, Carlsbad .. To the editor: Thank you for this wonderful overview of the 70-year history of Disneyland. Seventy years ago, when I was 8, my sister was 12 and my brother was 6, my parents decided to take us on a five-week drive across the country from the Boston suburbs to Los Angeles to be part of the grand opening of Disneyland. We drove without GPS, but with the old AAA booklets, to see our beautiful country. Along the way, we stopped at Yellowstone, Bryce, Zion and Yosemite national parks. But what was most memorable was our wonderful time at Disneyland's grand opening. All our neighbors came out to say goodbye as we started our journey, and we drove in an old DeSoto without air conditioning. But we didn't care because we got to see so much. We collected small pendants from each state and learned to appreciate this great country's beauty and natural wonders. Because of this experience, I am still an active traveler all over the world, and it all started with my parents' desire to imbue in us a love of seeing this country and the world — and of course, Disneyland. Fran Lyons, Encino .. To the editor: My dad began working at Walt Disney Studios in 1956 just after the opening of Disneyland. He would tell us that the Disney motto was 'Never stop creating.' All Disney employees were given free tickets to the park annually. While driving from Hollywood to Anaheim took about two hours since the 5 Freeway was just being constructed, my mom would pack a lunch to eat in the car during the long journeys. Very special memories. Cheryl Ortega, Los Feliz .. To the editor: Disney may have created '70 years of magic' but, elsewhere in the same edition of the paper, the Los Angeles Times noted that Disney pledged $15 million for President Trump's library to resolve a defamation lawsuit ('After CBS and ABC's Trump settlements, Democrats want to curb presidential library gifts,' July 16). That pretty much cancels out Disney magic in my book. Mary Montes, West Hills

From the Keys to Sanibel: Survey says Florida has some of the best islands in the U.S.

Florida's islands are still favorites among tourists. Florida's hotels, not so much. The Sunshine State is home to several of the best islands to visit in the entire continental United States, according to a newly published survey of nearly 200,000 travelers worldwide. That includes two locales hit hard by three hurricanes in four years — a tribute to Floridians' resilience. The bragging rights stem from the results of the publication Travel + Leisure's 2025 World's Best Awards, out in July. The annual issue, in its 30th year, asked readers all over the globe to vote on their favorite top destinations, hotels, and a host of other categories. While several of Florida's islands dominated in that category, cities and hotels across the state didn't perform quite as competitively. The winning islands were: ▪ Amelia Island in second ▪ Marco Island in sixth ▪ Florida Keys in eighth ▪ Sanibel Island in eleventh ▪ Captiva Island in fifteenth Florida dominated that category, providing five of the top 15. That was more than any other state in the continental U.S. It was also one more than it had in the 2024 World's Best Awards — Marco Island joined the other four for the first time this year. Florida's top islands Travel + Leisure had readers rate the islands on natural attractions/beaches, activities/sights, restaurants/food, people/friendliness and value. Amelia Island is known for beaches and horseback rides. In Nassau County, it's about 30 minutes from Jacksonville. It held the same position in last year's rankings. Marco Island is in Collier County and about 20 miles south of Naples. Abundant with wildlife, it's the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands. In the early days of COVID-19, it was an early rebel, even by Florida standards. In late April 2020, Marco Island City Council voted for a limited re-opening of its beaches. At the beginning of that month, Governor Ron De Santis had issued a shelter in place order for the entire state. It limited the public to essential activities or services. The city council later reversed course due to public pressure to keep the beaches closed. The Florida Keys dropped this year to eighth from fifth in 2024, but remains a regular favorite. 'Old Florida at its very best,' one Travel + Leisure reader wrote. 'Locally owned and managed eateries and hotels. Down-home Southern friendliness. Great food,' the magazine said. Sanibel Island, known for seashells on beaches and serving as a weekend getaway for South Floridians, slipped to eleventh from 10th one year ago. That it's ranked at all is remarkable given it was wrecked by Hurricane Ian in 2022. Parts of the Sanibel Causeway were damaged. Hurricane Milton in 2024 with its 120 mile-per-hour winds also hit Sanibel Island but didn't do as much damage. Captiva Island in Lee County, popular for redfish and snook, was hit by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Helene and Milton, within two weeks of one another in 2024. Iconic waterside restaurant The Mucky Duck was damaged by all three. Even as the island category was where Florida shined, the results also reflected the increasing pull of the world. Amelia Island, second best in the U.S., scored a total of 86.81. The 25th ranked island in the world had a higher score. The big winner was Páros in Greece, chosen as the top island in the world. Mount Desert Island in Maine was the best in the U.S. Hotels, cities absent? The findings however were not all sunshine. Among the best 100 hotels in the world, not a single one was in Florida. The U.S. overall had 16, California leading with four. Massachusetts and New York were also represented. In the best U.S. cities to visit category, not one from Florida cracked the Top 15. New York City, Chicago and Boston all did. Santa Fe, New Mexico, topped the list for the first time in the best U.S. cities to visit. 'Readers raved about the inventive New Mexican cuisine and the destination's natural beauty - sitting at 7,000 feet,' Travel + Leisure wrote. Santa Fe, which gets over 300 days of sunshine per year, also won praise for its markets and art galleries. These results reflect an increasingly competitive tourism market for Florida. Gone are the COVID-19 days when everyone flocked to the Sunshine State. It's now battling Europe, Asia, much of the United States and Latin America, too. While Florida was shut out in the top 100 hotels, Mexico, Chile, Peru and Costa Rica each had two. Argentina and Panama had one a piece. The 2025 results reflect a constantly changing travel landscape, Travel + Leisure Editor-in-Chief Jacqui Gifford said in a statement. 'From a high-desert city in the American Southwest to a quiet Greek island, our readers are seeking depth, character and a strong sense of place.'
