
BITS Pilani, Hyderabad develops plant-based cure for Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia

, Hyderabad, have developed a
plant-based drug formulation
that could offer more affordable treatment for iron overload, a condition common in patients with Thalassaemia and
Sickle Cell Anaemia
. The new formulation, tested successfully on rats and mice, uses compounds found in plants to remove excess iron from the body and does so using a much lower dosage than the standard treatment available in the market today.
Published in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, the study explains how the team combined caffeic acid, a naturally occurring compound, with amino acids to create two formulations: Caffeic Acid–Spermine (CA-Sp) and Caffeic Acid–Histidine (CA-His). "When compared with the current drug in use, CA-Sp required just one-fifth of the dosage to remove excess iron," said department of biological sciences professor Jayati Ray Dutta. She worked on the project along with Ramakrishnan Ganesan from the department of chemistry. Researchers pointed out that even though the treatment duration was kept the same for comparison, the new drug showed better iron removal and lower toxicity. "We tested for liver inflammation and found that our drug performed better than the standard one," Dutta said. Apart from effectiveness, the formulation also scores high on affordability. "The current drug costs about 300 per dose. Our plant-based formulation could cut the cost by more than 50%," she added. The researchers used the natural iron-binding ability of polyphenols and paired them with compounds known as biogenic amines, which are commonly found in nature. "This is a step forward in developing green, affordable therapies for transfusion-dependent patients. It has the potential to transform iron overload treatment, not just in India but globally," said Ganesan. Iron overload is a growing concern in India, especially among patients with Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia who depend on frequent blood transfusions. Left untreated, excess iron can severely damage the liver, heart, and endocrine system, they added and pointed out that India is home to over 100,000 Thalassaemia patients, many of whom require perpetual
iron chelation therapy
(ICT) to manage iron toxicity.

Over 5 lakh take part in Yogandhra-2025 campaign in Chittoor
The month-long Yogandhra-2025 celebrations concluded on Saturday at Mesanical Grounds of the District Sports Authority here with District Collector Sumit Kumar urging people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives for better health. Addressing a massive gathering of yoga participants, the Collector said that over 5 lakh people participated in yoga sessions conducted in coordination with the AP Tourism and Revenue departments. More than 5,000 trainers were deployed to ensure wide public engagement across the district. 'We conducted major sessions at seven venues, including tourist spots like Puligundu, Boyakonda, Kanipakam, Naniyala Elephant Camp, and Kangundi Fort. These sessions drew thousands of participants,' he said. The Collector highlighted that yoga must not be limited to a one-month campaign but practiced as a lifelong companion to enhance physical and mental well-being. Referring to the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam, Mr. Kumar said that it would serve as a valid endorsement of the benefits of yoga for society. Eradication possible through awareness: Collector
Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha on Thursday emphasised that Sickle Cell Anaemia can be eradicated through comprehensive awareness, announcing large-scale awareness programmes which commenced on June 19. He highlighted a robust action plan in place to curb the disease, with a specific focus on tribal areas. On Thursday, to mark World Sickle Cell Day, the District Medical and Health Department organised a Sickle Cell awareness programme at the Kondapalli Tribal Welfare Girls' School. Collector Lakshmisha, along with other officials, unveiled posters, pamphlets, and manuals related to the Sickle Cell Anaemia Eradication Mission and comprehensive disease information. Speaking at the event, the collector stressed the urgent need to create widespread awareness about the disease across various segments of society, as part of the mission to eradicate Sickle Cell Anaemia even before 2047. He explained that while healthy red blood cells are typically round, in Sickle Cell Anaemia, these cells are crescent-shaped. He clarified that the disease is hereditary, passed from parents, and is not contagious. He added that the disease can be diagnosed through a simple blood test. He reassured that individuals with Sickle Cell Anaemia need not worry, as timely identification and proper medical care can significantly improve a patient's quality of life.
