TSMC's taiwan stock value surpasses US$1tril amid AI frenzy
TAIPEI : Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (TSMC) market value closed above US$1 trillion for the first time in Taipei last week, with a raised sales forecast driven by robust artificial intelligence (AI) demand.
The main supplier of chips to Apple Inc and Nvidia Corp saw its Taiwanese shares climb to a record high on Friday, a near 50% rise from an April low.
That has made it the first Asian stock worth more than US$1 trillion, since PetroChina Co briefly reached the milestone in 2007.
TSMC's stock surge reflected growing investor confidence that the world's top chipmaker will ride the AI boom to even greater dominance.
The company raised its full-year revenue growth forecast to about 30% last week, signaling TSMC may benefit in a tightening race for AI manufacturing capacity.
'We think that TSMC's tone towards advanced node demand is even more positive with AI customers showing no signs of demand slowdown,' wrote Goldman Sachs Group Inc analysts, including Bruce Lu, after TSMC's quarterly earnings.
'We expect to see a higher magnitude of price hike in 2026,' he added.
TSMC's American depositary receipts were valued at around US$1.2 trillion as of the close on Friday.
Owning ADR shares have been more convenient for foreign investors as converting the Taipei-listed stock into the US equivalent needs regulatory approval.
Strong AI spending by TSMC's customers and the upside of wafer prices will help mitigate the negative impact of a strong Taiwan dollar and help add resilience to the company's gross margins, JPMorgan Chase & Co analysts including Gokul Hariharan wrote in a note late last week.

Nvidia-backed Enfabrica releases system aimed at easing memory costs
A NVIDIA logo is shown at SIGGRAPH 2017 in Los Angeles, California, U.S. July 31, 2017. REUTERS/Mike Blake SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Enfabrica, a Silicon Valley-based chip startup working on solving bottlenecks in artificial intelligence data centers, on Tuesday released a chip-and-software system aimed at reining in the cost of memory chips in those centers. Enfabrica, which has raised $260 million in venture capital to date and is backed by Nvidia, released a system it calls EMFASYS, pronounced like "emphasis." The system aims to address the fact that a portion of the high cost of flagship AI chips from Nvidia or rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices is not the computing chips themselves, but the expensive high-bandwidth memory (HBM) attached to them that is required to keep those speedy computing chips supplied with data. Those HBM chips are supplied by makers such as SK Hynix and Micron Technology. The Enfabrica system uses a special networking chip that it has designed to hook the AI computing chips up directly to boxes filled with another kind of memory chip called DDR5 that is slower than its HBM counterpart but much cheaper. By using special software, also made by Enfabrica, to route data back and forth between AI chips and large amounts of lower-cost memory, Enfabrica is hoping its chip will keep data center speeds up but costs down as tech companies ramp up chatbots and AI agents, said Enfabrica Co-Founder and CEO Rochan Sankar. Rochan said Enfabrica has three "large AI cloud" customers using the chip but declined to disclose their names. "It's not replacing" HBM, Sankar told Reuters. "It is capping (costs) where those things would otherwise have to blow through the roof in order to scale to what people are expecting." Malaysia set to emerge as Asean AI hub with Nvidia-YTL partnership
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is poised to emerge as a regional hub and centre of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia, following the signing of a landmark partnership between Nvidia Corp and YTL Power International Bhd. YTL Corp Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh described the partnership as a "blessing". "We are indeed blessed to be a partner of visionary Jensen Huang's Nvidia and also to continue to play a role as a leaven to boost the productive use of AI in the Asean region," Yeoh told Business Times. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the agreement marks a significant step in accelerating Malaysia's AI capabilities. The initiative, backed by a substantial investment of RM10 billion, underscores Malaysia's ambition to position itself at the forefront of AI innovation. "This landmark project includes the development of AI data centres, deployment of Nvidia's high-performance graphics processing units and, most importantly, the creation of Malaysia's own sovereign large language model (LLM)," Tengku Zafrul shared on X. The sovereign LLM is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Malaysia's digital autonomy by enabling the creation of AI solutions tailored to local languages, cultures and industries — supporting national security and propelling digital economic growth. YTL Power, a unit of YTL Corp, will lead the physical development of the AI infrastructure. The company is also tasked with building a robust AI ecosystem by engaging global technology firms, local suppliers and local contractors, ensuring strong domestic participation. Tengku Zafrul added that the partnership is a direct result of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's international engagement efforts, which have opened the door to high-impact investments with the potential to reshape Malaysia's economic and technological future.

Ringgit retreats as investors watch for US central bank policy updates
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — The ringgit ended lower against the US dollar today as market traders await the outcome of the United States (US) Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, said an economist. The two-day FOMC meeting, taking place from July 29 to 30 in Washington, is expected to provide key guidance on the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy direction. At 6 pm, the local note eased to 4.2320/2365 versus the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2275/2345. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that in the meantime, the US labour market data will be the key focus tonight when the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) will be published. 'Consensus estimates have pegged the number of jobs openings to decline to 7.55 million in June from 7.769 million in the prior month,' he told Bernama. Thus far, he said, the US Dollar Index (DXY) has risen to as high as 99.01 but later hovers around 98.816 points. At the close, the ringgit ended higher against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8479/8511 from 2.8497/8546 at the close on Monday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6518/6578 from 5.6720/6814 last week, and edged higher against the euro to 4.8990/9042 from 4.9331/9412 previously.
