10 best family tents for camping in 2025: Spacious, multi-room and weather-proof models

Independenta day ago
Camping can be a lovely way for families to take holidays or short breaks together and feel closer to nature – soaking up the great outdoors, eating in the open air, watching sunrises, and stargazing.
But the tent you choose can have a huge impact on the experience. Flimsy materials, leaky roofs or collapsing structures do not make for happy campers, nor does feeling boxed in or struggling to find somewhere to put your stuff.
Family tents come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and styles, from spaceship-like futuristic designs to blast-from-the-past canvas classics. Regardless of whether you opt for an inflatable or poled family tent, you'll want a solid roof over your head – one that can withstand everything a British summer (or spring or autumn) can throw at it.
You also need to think about how many bedrooms you want and how easy the tent is to put up. For example, inflatable tents tend to be quicker and simpler to set up than poled options, but inflatable versions are also usually more expensive, heavier and bulkier, making them harder to transport and store (you'll also need to carry a pump with you).
That's why I've been busy putting lots of family tents to the test, from cosy and compact designs to multi-room affairs, across a range of budgets and camping needs, from ultralight backpacking tents to luxurious homes-away-from-homes. Though I think the Vango Savannah 400 is the best option for most families, there are lots of other excellent options to consider.
How I tested
I pitched, inspected and slept in several tents before whittling down the options to my favourites. My family and I tested the tents in the back garden before taking them on camping trips in North Wales and other locations around the UK. Testing took place during cool temperatures and rain as well as warmer weather.
Each model was scored on several key criteria:
Pitching: I looked at how quick and easy the tents were to pitch and take down, as no one wants to waste precious holiday time on assembly.
Weight: It was vital to consider how heavy and bulky the tents were, which is particularly important if you're planning on hiking with your tent.
Comfort/practicality: I considered whether the tents had blackout bedrooms (key for families with babies or young children), how much space there was inside, and special features or interesting design elements, such as windows, ventilation and storage.
Stability and durability: Finally, I looked for tents with quality materials and durable designs that have been made to last.

Meet Ben - South Wales contestant on BBC's new Destination X

Destination X will be hosted by Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon, and is described as a mix between The Traitors and Race Across the World. The new series will see contestants travel around Europe on a bus with blacked-out windows, trying to work out where in the world they are. At the end of each episode, the contestants will guess where they think they are, placing an X on a map. Whoever puts their X furthest away from the location is immediately thrown off the X-bus and eliminated from the competition. The last person standing will walk away with a cash prize of £10,000. Meet Ben - the South Wales contestant taking part in Destination X One of the 13 contestants taking part in series one of Destination X is 42-year-old Surf School Director, Ben, who hails from South Wales. Ben has "20 years' experience of doing some crazy activities" including the likes of surfing and cliff jumping. He is now looking to take part in Destination X to show his boys "that Dad's still got it". When asked why he thought he was selected by the BBC for the show, Ben said: "I have experience and am fairly capable in outdoor activities. "Being a surfer, you're used to dealing with lots of situations very quickly. A lot of my friends define me as affable. I get on with people quite well. "I've just spent a few weeks in a caravan with my family so can handle confined spaces." The 42-year-old has maintained a level of fitness, ready for the show, and mentally has been treating it "as if I was going to prison". Top 10 best British TV series Ben explained: "I'll be cut off from everybody and have got to deal with new people and environments that might be testing and challenging. "It'd be nicer to think I'm going to space as an astronaut." He said the thought of being away from his family, with no contact, for so long was making him anxious. "That's one of the things I might struggle with. The longest I've spent away from my kids in 10 years is five days, and in that time, I still spoke to them," Ben added. "But I'm looking forward to not having to check my phone and to having real conversations with people." His plan to win Destination X and take home the £100k is to "not think too hard about it". Ben explained: "Sometimes I will overthink things to a point that I come up with the wrong answer. "So I want to be myself, have fun with it and try to lead with my gut." If he wins, Ben said he would put the £100k towards helping his local community. He said: "My whole life I've put people first, above money. "But there is that conundrum that the communities I support are constantly looking for funding so it would help. "There's a number of accessible bits of equipment I'd like to design and build, and that money would give me freedom to be able to make that happen." Rob Brydon says "I'd be hopeless" on Destination X Rob Brydon also opened up about his time on Destination X, revealing why he wanted to be a part of the show and how he would have fared on the BBC series. The Gavin & Stacey star said: "I've never done a TV show on this scale before. I loved the idea of it, the combination of having to work out clues as to where you are and having to get on with each other. "It struck me as the best bits of The Traitors with the best bits of Race Across the World. "The other thing that attracted me was the scale of it and being a part of a show as ambitious as this, with as huge a crew and as huge a team. "I knew it would be a real challenge to see if I could steer that ship." Rob Brydon said he was surprised at how invested he became in the show. (Image: BBC/TwoFour) Brydon said he was surprised at how invested he became during the series. He explained: "It didn't take long at all to get really fully invested in it. "You get involved with the contestants and you feel for them when they are struggling, and you celebrate with them when they do well. "It was a far more involving experience than I was expecting." When asked about how he would fare on Destination X, Brydon commented: "I think I would be hopeless at the game, I would not have a clue and would be cruelly exposed as being not too bright at all!" Destination X contestants travel on a bus with blacked-out windows. (Image: BBC/TwoFour) He continued: "I would have struggled hugely with that (being on the bus for 30 days) as well, particularly the lack of sleep. "They have nice bunks but nonetheless you're sleeping on a bus. You lose your privacy; I would have found that very difficult indeed." There will be two new episodes every week, airing on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Faroe Islands introduce self-navigating cars to take tourists off the beaten track

The Faroe Islands have introduced a fleet of self-navigating, speaking cars in a bid to tackle 'predictable experiences' and expose visitors to undiscovered destinations on the archipelago. A video introducing the scheme shows visitors hiring a car before following navigation instructions to lesser-known places. Along the way, the car 'narrates' information about the surprise route. A statement from the Faroe Islands explains that tourists' tendency to gather around 'the same iconic hotspots' creates a 'closed ecosystem where images from popular places attract even more people to those very locations.' It adds that the result is overtourism and 'predictable experiences'. After booking with 62N car rental, a partner of Visit Faroe Islands, travellers scan a QR code which activates one of 30 itineraries curated from a locals' perspective. These include a visit to Europe's tallest sea cliffs, hikes to breathtaking fjords and a trip to a roadside fish-and-chips stand. 'There's just one catch: you have to surrender control,' reads the statement. 'When you rent one of these cars, you sign an agreement to follow its directions, with no clue where you're headed.' Visit Faroe Islands CEO Guðrið Højgaard said: 'We set out to explore how technology and creativity could offer a new way for travellers to discover the Faroes – one that leads them into places they might never find on their own. 'This is a more thoughtful kind of journey, designed to both protect what's most beloved and reveal spots often overlooked. 'With this initiative, we hope to lead by example, demonstrating how destinations can embrace innovation to spread tourism more responsibly and meaningfully.' The new fleet of cars can be booked on the Visit Faroe Islands website, with rates starting from around £74 per day.

I've found an incredible cheap UK holiday park that brings the best bits of Center Parcs, Butlin's and Haven to ONE site

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IF you want the style of Center Parcs, the buzz of Butlin's and the hype of Haven, I've found one holiday park that has it all and it won;t cost a fortune. When one child loves spending hours in the pool, another enjoys a boogie on the dance floor and the third wants to swing through the trees on the high ropes, it's hard to know which holiday park is best for your family break - but I've got you covered. 7 I took my three sons for a holiday at a Haven park in North Wales Credit: Catherine Lofthouse 7 There's a climbing wall and plenty of other activities too Credit: Haven My family and I recently took a trip to Haven's Hafan y Mor park near Pwllheli in North Wales. We loved it so much I had booked to return next summer before we'd even made it home. The park is set on a little slice of the British coastline that's like stepping back in time to the holidays of your childhood. The site's staycation secret is that it used to be a Butlin's before being turned into a Haven 25 years ago. So it's still got all the best bits of Butlin's - from the flumes and slides of the Splashaway Bay adventure pool to the top-notch venue full of shows. I even did a double take when I saw the stripy blue tops of the entertainment crew, instead of the Redcoats of Butlin's from days gone by. Now one of the largest Haven parks, there's a stunning choice of outdoor activities you'd usually see at an upscale Center Parc resort. It's the first Haven I've been to where the high ropes take you through the trees, just like at Center Parcs. The Dragon Lakes Adventure Park even sees thrill-seekers zipping over the waters where fellow guests can take to pedalos. The adrenaline-charged activities also include The Jump - a terrifying free-fall leap onto a huge inflatable cushion - as well as climbing wall, mini 4x4 off-roaders and even Segways. There's all sorts of accommodation at Hafan y Mor, including Center-Parcs-style pine lodges surrounded by trees. The perfect Haven holiday park for a kid-friendly break - with direct beach access, indoor waterpark and neighbouring seaside theme park 7 You can jump off the free-fall platform Credit: Haven 7 One of my sons was a big fan of the giant trampolines Credit: Catherine Lofthouse There are even old-fashioned chalet blocks from back in the Butlin's days and mod-con caravans you'll see at all Haven resorts, so you can pick whatever works for you and your budget. It's not often that my three boys all get their own bedroom when we go away on holiday, but our recently refurbished four-bed chalet was huge. I loved the village vibe of everyone hanging out on their decking or balcony, so reminiscent of childhood holidays when the kids played together on the grass by your block. I even spotted one family stringing up a badminton net. The chalet accommodation is also one of the cheapest options - we paid less than £300 for our June weekend away and it's only £275 for four nights in the summer holidays next year, which is incredible value for money if you're bringing eight people. We were just a stone's throw from Dragon Lakes Activity Village, which also offers up sports courts, a sandpit playground and even a bark park for furry family members. Like Center Parcs, most of the activities aren't included in the price of your break, and you'll need to factor that in, but the cost is far less at Haven. We paid £12 for Aquajets in the pool, £8 for the mini 4x4 off roaders and £7 for a go on the bungee trampoline. 7 We rented out aquajets which were cheaper than those at Center Parcs Credit: Catherine Lofthouse 7 The holiday park is surrounded by beaches where you can relax or paddle Credit: Haven Aquajets at Center Parcs would set you back £18.50 to £22.50, while children's 4x4 off-road explorers are £24, so there's a hefty saving to be made here. And you could easily just stick to the freebie fun if you prefer. The pool was enough to keep everyone busy for hours and although you pre-book an entry time, there wasn't anyone asking us to leave at the end of our hour time slot on the weekend we were there. The free shows and entertainment were great - my littlest loved the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime and won a prize for his enthusiastic dancing at the kids' disco. And no seaside staycation would be complete without a stroll to see the sandy shore, although you might need to venture a bit further afield if you want to find a beach to play on. This is quite a spread-out site with a railway track splitting it in two, but there's a land train that takes you on a turn around the park if your little ones are worn out with all the activities and don't fancy walking. This tucked-away spot is surrounded by dramatic mountains, picturesque beaches and unassuming tourist towns that only add to the magic of a trip here. It's like going back in time to the heyday of the great British staycation. Catching sight of Criccieth Castle overlooking the beach was a welcome signal that we had almost arrived after our long drive. It's a bit of a trek to get there, but the direct train from Birmingham takes less than five hours, around the same time as travelling by train from London to Cornwall. And Penychain station is on the edge of the park within walking distance of its entrance. This haven by the sea could well become our new holiday hotspot as it ticks all the boxes for my boys. Here's more about the Haven holiday from someone who visits every year - and has discovered secret areas that guests don't know about. Plus, the beachfront Haven holiday park reveals plans for huge new adventure attraction and Wetherspoons pub.
