From trading floors to retail loans, traditional banks lose ground to tech-savvy challengers: BCG
are struggling to keep pace with fast-moving, tech-driven financial rivals, even as the overall
financial services
sector continues to grow. This is the central finding of Boston Consulting Group's latest Future of Finance report.
'Financial services revenues are growing – but
banks
are not capturing their fair share,' BCG says. The report observes that value is shifting away from traditional banks to fintechs, private credit funds, non-bank liquidity providers, and digital-native banks. 'Maturing digital assets appear to be on pace to cause significant disruption, with most banks currently on the outside looking in,' it adds.
Digital attacker banks have seen the highest growth among financial players. According to BCG, these banks have recorded revenue compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of 85–100% over the past five years. They are followed closely by private credit players and retail trading platforms. In contrast, traditional banks have posted revenue CAGR of just 10–15%, even though they still hold the largest share of balance-sheet assets.

The advantage of these challenger firms lies in their use of scalable platforms, lean cost structures, and digital-first models. 'Non-traditional bank competitors are generating new revenue pools,' BCG says. 'The best attackers are positioned for rapid growth, thanks to modern technology stacks and front-to-back digitised operating models.'
The disruption is not limited to
retail finance
. In capital markets too, boutique advisory firms and non-bank market makers are steadily eating into the fee income of large banks. 'Private credit has been gnawing away at bank share, particularly in the US,' the report says.
Live Events
Traditional banks are also facing deep-rooted structural challenges. Their fee income is declining. Productivity from non-interest income has dropped across all regions. Meanwhile, cost pressures continue to rise. Despite having invested in technology for years, their efficiency gains are starting to slow. 'Many banks struggle to counter these trends,' BCG says. The report also points out that pricing remains an underused tool for improving performance.
The difference in cost efficiency is stark. According to the report, the cost-to-serve for
neobanks
is often only one-tenth that of traditional banks. 'New competitors are winning on productivity,' BCG says.
Investors, too, are taking note of this growing gap. In regions such as East Asia and the Eurozone, most bank stocks are now trading below their book value. 'Investors are avoiding banks that may be in a vicious cycle of outdated operating model and low profitability,' BCG warns.

Land acquisition prep begins for Patna-Purnia expressway
Patna: Revenue and land reforms department has started preparations for land acquisition across six districts — Vaishali , Samastipur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura and Purnia — for the Patna-Purnia Greenfield Expressway project after receiving necessary clearances. Landowners will be compensated at market rates to ensure smooth acquisition and avoid potential disputes. Revenue and land reforms department's additional chief secretary Deepak Kumar Singh has written to all six district magistrates (DMs), instructing them to proceed with preliminary notifications after obtaining approval from the Central Valuation Committee. The directive came following a high-level meeting chaired by chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena recently, according to the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). An NHAI official said Singh, in his letter to the DMs, told them to conduct a revised valuation of land based on the prevailing market price in the area, as per Section 26 (3) of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, before initiating the process. "In this context, prohibition, excise and registration department has been granted the authority for special revision of MVR (minimum value registered) under Sub-rule 7 of the Bihar Stamp (Amendment) Rules, 2013, in light of the notification," said the official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like അപൂർവ്വയിനം റോസാ വിത്തുകൾ: വേഗത്തിലുള്ള ഡെലിവറി Rare Climbing Rose Seeds Learn More Undo He added the 90m-wide greenfield expressway will be built with an estimated cost of Rs 18,042 crore till Chandbhatti village on Purnia-Kishanganj NH-27. "A total of 21 big and 140 small bridges, 11 ROBs, 21 interchanges and 322 underpasses will be built under the project. At the request of the state govt, spurs will be constructed to connect the cities of Samastipur, Saharsa and Madhepura to this project. The designated speed limit on this route will be 120km per hour. The state govt has appointed a competent authority for land acquisition," the official said. The project will also provide connectivity to Bihta Airport through a bridge between Dighwara and Sherpur, and eventually link to Darbhanga and Purnia airports. Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Patna and Purnia by half from at least seven hours to three-four hours.

Difficult to project FY26 disinvestment mop-up at the moment: MoS for finance
The government on Monday said it is 'difficult' to anticipate the precise amount of its disinvestment proceeds this fiscal, as the process hinges on a number of factors, such as administrative feasibility, market conditions, economic outlook and investor interest. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the FY26 budget estimate of Rs 47,000 crore under miscellaneous capital receipts indicates total mop-up from the government's management of equity investments and public assets through various mechanisms, and not just disinvestment.
