When a restaurant leaves you dreaming about your next visit before you've even digested your last meal, it's doing something right – and for me, that place is the Old Manse of Blair.
Set in the rolling beauty of Highland Perthshire, I'd been looking for an excuse to return since my last visit, and Mother's Day provided the perfect one.
The journey there was as much a part of the experience as the meal itself. We set off from Fife, taking our time and soaking in the spring sunshine.
A nostalgic pitstop at Killiecrankie – a place rich with childhood memories of squirrel-spotting and Jacobite tales – brought a charming start to the day.
After a cuppa at the visitor centre café, we wound our way up to Blair Atholl, where the Old Manse of Blair awaited us for a 2pm booking.
Approaching the Old Manse of Blair, which was recently added to the Michelin Guide 2025, feels like arriving at a country estate from a bygone era. Surrounded by peaceful hills, ancient forests, and fronted by a field of gorgeous Highland cows, it's a scene straight from a postcard.
Birds flitted overhead as we stepped inside the beautifully restored building – a labour of love that has retained all its stately character while offering modern comfort and elegance.
It was great to return under the culinary leadership of Scott Davies, formerly of the celebrated Three Chimneys on Skye. I'd interviewed Scott last year, and I still remembered the dish he served – a smoked salmon creation with an unforgettable forest tea.
To my delight, it was on the Mother's Day menu, and I couldn't wait for my mum – a former chef herself – to try it.
We were seated in the airy orangery, a stunning space that bridges the indoor luxury and the wild outdoors. We toasted with glasses of excellent champagne, befitting the occasion.
Then came the dish I'd been waiting for: hot and cold smoked salmon, delicately presented with Jerusalem artichoke, radish, spruce oil, and that incredible forest tea – now served in its own little whisky glass rather than poured on the fish.
The tea, more of a rich and fragrant broth than anything leafy, had the depth of a meat stock without a trace of meat. Its umami warmth came from foraged mushrooms, bringing the very soul of the forest into the glass.
It was both sophisticated and deeply comforting – a genuine highlight of the meal.
Even the bread course stood out. As someone who's gluten-free, I'm used to the usual sad freezer fare, but here? I was served what seemed to be freshly baked gluten-free bread, paired with a heavenly mushroom and miso butter.
My mum had the Wasted Degrees amber rye sourdough, made with local beer, and also raved about it. When even the butter is a conversation starter, you know you're in good hands.
For mains, I chose the North Sea roasted cod, which came with purple sprouting broccoli, charred cucumber, almonds, sweet pickled onion, fermented chilli sauce, and dill oil.
The fish was perfectly cooked – fresh, flaky, and so soft it barely needed a knife. The fermented chilli brought a gentle hum of heat, balanced by delicious vegetables and aromatic oil.
Mum opted for a trio of hogget – rump, belly, and rib – paired with mint hedgerow ketchup, elderberry sauce, and wild herb pesto.
The portion was so generous she ended up taking some home, but not before thoroughly enjoying the beautifully cooked, wonderfully flavoured meat and its lively accompaniments.
The staff were another highlight. The maître d' and waiter were knowledgeable, relaxed, and full of good humour. Despite the fine-dining calibre of the meal, the atmosphere was unpretentious and warm.
For dessert, I chose the decadent Maranon 70% chocolate tart (which they gladly made gluten-free), topped with hazelnut crumble, praline, and the dreamiest double milk ice cream. Rich, indulgent, but not overwhelming – it was a perfect finale.
Mum's dessert was a theatrical event: a parcel of forced rhubarb delights, hiding sponge, ginger beer and sorbet, all tied together with hay-smoked custard and chilli sugar. Each spoonful revealed a new texture or taste.
After our meal, we explored the drawing rooms of the Old Manse. Each space is tastefully decorated with bold artwork, plush furnishings, and splashes of colour that speak of contemporary luxury within a historic shell.
We found a piano in one room where Mum played the one tune she knows.
Outside, we wandered the grounds in the spring sunshine, greeting the Highland cows before heading off.
It was the kind of day that lingers with you – a perfect blend of food, family, and the unique charm of Highland hospitality.
There's also the enticing option to stay overnight at the Old Manse, which offers boutique rooms and other accommodation options across the estate.
It's the sort of place that beckons for a summer return – long days, wild walks, and more of Scott Davies' culinary wizardry.
For £65 each I thought the price was worth the wonderful food and the stunning setting.
I'd encourage anyone who enjoys an innovative and delicious meal to take the beautiful drive to The Old Manse of Blair.

The route from Stonehaven Harbour to the iconic Dunnottar Castle was named the third most beautiful walk in the UK in a new study by photo printing company CEWE, which analysed Google reviews to find the country's most-loved walking trails, Express reports. ‌ Each location was assessed on the number of five-star ratings and how often words like 'beautiful', 'stunning', 'amazing', and 'lovely' appeared in the reviews. ‌ The Stonehaven to Dunnottar walk scored highly, with 254 reviewers describing it as beautiful and an overall 4.8-star rating. The 3.5-mile circular route takes between 90 minutes and two hours to complete and leads walkers south from the town's picturesque harbour to the imposing ruins of Dunnottar Castle. Along the way, the trail passes through Black Hill, Strathlethan Bay, Dunnicaer Pictish Fort, and Castle Haven. Stonehaven, a former fishing town with around 11,000 residents, is known not only for its coastal charm but also for its ancient Hogmanay fireballs ceremony, during which locals parade through the streets swinging flaming balls above their heads to banish evil spirits and welcome the new year. ‌ But the real showstopper is Dunnottar Castle itself. A ruined medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky headland, it sits about two miles south of Stonehaven and boasts a commanding position on the northeast coast. While most of the existing buildings date to the 15th and 16th centuries, the site has been fortified since the Early Middle Ages. ‌ Dunnottar has played a central role in Scottish history, most famously as the hiding place of the Honours of Scotland, the nation's crown jewels, during Oliver Cromwell's invasion in the 17th century. Once the seat of the powerful Earls Marischal and home to the Keith family from the 14th century, the castle declined after the final Earl forfeited his titles for supporting the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. It is located in the Outer Hebrides, between South Uist and Barra. Scotland's islands make for a great day trip or staycation destination. Out of the hundreds of islands dotted around the country's coast, there are countless worth visiting. If you are looking for something a bit different for a holiday this summer season, there is one isle in the Outer Hebrides that is a hidden gem. In addition to its spectacular beaches, it is also a wildlife lover's dream. ‌ Eriskay is a small island situated between South Uist and Barra. It is connected to the former via a causeway that first opened in 2001. ‌ Home to a population of around just 140 people, Eriskay makes for a great escape if you are needing some time away from the hustle and bustle. The island has a few accommodation options dotted around, but for the most part is dominated by nature. One of Eriskay's most notable features is its resident pony population. Eriskay ponies, which roam freely on the island, are extremely rare—with only a few hundred existing worldwide. According to the Visit Outer Hebrides website, Eriskay ponies are "the last surviving native Hebridean pony breed". They are known for their hardy and people-friendly nature and generally grey colour. Meanwhile, one of the island's top beauty spots is Eriskay Beach, which is located along its northwest coast. Known for its pristine white sands and bright turquoise waters, it is a great spot for sunbathing—and even a dip in the water if you can face the cold. Eriskay Beach has received rave reviews from visitors on Google, where it has an overall rating of 4.9 out of five based on 77 reviews. Recent travellers have described the bay as "lovely" and "a must visit". ‌ Another popular beach on the island is Prince Charlie's Bay, which is found south of Eriskay Beach. Also known 'Coilleag a Phrionnsa'—Gaelic for 'the Prince's cockleshell strand'—it is among the most historic beaches in Scotland. As its name suggests, Prince Charlie's Bay has a fascinating past tied to Bonnie Prince Charlie. It is said that he first set foot on Scottish soil on the beach in 1745, ahead of the Jacobite rising. ‌ Like Eriskay Beach, Prince Charlie's Bay has earned very positive feedback from day-trippers. The beach has a rating of 4.9 out of five on Google, where recent visitors have called it "beautiful" and praised its "stunning views". There is also a popular pub and restaurant on Eriskay called Am Politician, named after a vessel that ran aground off the island in 1945. Utilising locally sourced seafood and produce, it serves up everything from snacks to three-course home-cooked meals. ‌ One recent Am Politician customer wrote: "Stopped off for some lunch. A very tasty special of kippers and then had the meal deal of soup and a sandwich which was reasonably priced. "Staff friendly and great atmosphere." Elsewhere, another highlight of Eriskay is the Category C listed St Michael's Catholic Church. Dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, the church dates back to the early 1900s. If you are interested in visiting Eriskay, the island can be reached by travelling on the ferry to South Uist from Mallaig on the mainland. It takes an impressive garden to compete with this level of natural beauty but the Hercules Garden, which is set a short stroll from the Castle, more than rises to the challenges. It was laid out in the 18th century to cover nine and a half acres around a series of ponds and it is presided over by a life-sized statue of the Roman god who gives the garden its name. Everything here is on a large scale, from the 275-metre long herbaceous border that occupies the south-facing wall to the orchard of apples, pears, cherries, plums and damsons that covers the opposite slope. Ducks live on the ponds and marginal plants grow around the edges, but at one time the largest stretch of water was used for curling matches and McGregor's Folly - a handsome stone pavilion - now houses a small exhibit of the stones and brooms that would once have been used to play the roaring game. Climate change has resulted in fewer spells of the below-zero temperatures that are needed in order to freeze the surface of the ponds, but the central Highlands remain one of the coldest parts of the country so the high walls surrounding the Hercules Garden help to protect more tender plants, while the long daylight hours in summer encourage rapid growth, with the result that the garden fizzes with colour throughout the season. Part of Blair Castle's appeal is its wooded setting and this is the legacy of the 'Planting Dukes of Atholl' who, during the 18th and 19th centuries, populated the estate with 27 million trees, including many of the new arrivals that were reaching these shores from America and Asia. In doing so they transformed this part of Perthshire and the rarest of their imported conifers were planted in Diana's Grove, a two-acre woodland close to the castle. Today those early arrivals have grown into some of the tallest trees in Scotland and they surround the dramatic ruins of St Bride's Church, resting place of 'Bonnie Dundee', who led the Jacobite army at the battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 and who died in its closing moments. One of the best ways to explore the gardens at Blair is to follow the Sculpture Trail, which leads visitors past 20 artworks, both historic and contemporary, set amongst the landscape. A Squirrel Trail, which is populated by metal squirrels, has been designed to enchant young visitors. (Image: Discover Gardens) The long avenue that leads from the entrance gate to the castle itself is planted with Common Lime trees, some of which date back to 1740. As these trees reach the end of their life they will be replaced with young trees grown from seed collected on the estate. Visitors can explore the wider estate by foot or on bike using 50 miles of waymarked trails that lead across its moorlands. Part of these have recently been subjected to 're-wetting' to assist with carbon sequestration to provide habitat for insects and birds. Elsewhere hedges have been planted and meadow areas created to support populations of honeybees, bumblebees and the rare Mountain Mason Bees that are found on the estate.
