ED files chargesheet against Robert Vadra in Shikohpur land deal case
This is the first time a chargesheet has been filed by any investigative agency against 56-year-old Vadra in a criminal matter. According to the report, the ED has filed the complaint in a local court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Vadra was questioned by the agency for three consecutive days in April.
Shikohpur land deal case
The case concerns a land transaction involving Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd, a company in which Vadra was previously a director. In February 2008, the company purchased 3.5 acres of land in Shikohpur, Gurugram (then Manesar-Shikohpur, now sector 83), from Onkareshwar Properties for Rs 7.5 crore.
At the time, Haryana was governed by the Congress under then chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Four years later, in September 2012, Skylight Hospitality sold the land to real estate firm DLF for Rs 58 crore.
The deal became controversial in October 2012 when senior IAS officer Ashok Khemka, then serving as director general of land consolidation and land records-cum-inspector general of registration in Haryana, cancelled the land mutation. He stated the transaction violated provisions of the state's consolidation act and related procedures.
Robert Vadra rejects allegations
Vadra has consistently maintained that he has done nothing wrong. He has described the case as a "political vendetta" aimed at targeting him and his family, which includes former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and current Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Apart from the Shikohpur land deal, the ED is also probing Vadra in two other cases. One is related to UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari, and the other involves a separate land deal in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Delhi HC seeks NIA's response on Abdul Rashid's plea in terror funding case
The Delhi High Court on Friday sought a response from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on a plea by jailed Lok Sabha MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid seeking interim bail to attend the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid and in jail in a 2017 terror funding case, has also challenged a trial court order asking him to bear travel expenses of ₹1.44 lakh per day for attending Parliament in custody from July 24 to August 4. A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur issued notice to the NIA on the plea and listed the matter for further hearing on July 29. The court is also scheduled to hear on July 29 Rashid's regular bail plea in the case. The Baramulla MP has been lodged in Tihar jail since 2019 after he was arrested by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the case. During the brief hearing, Rashid's counsel submitted that the MP has already been saddled with Rs 17 lakh cost to represent the public at large in Parliament. He said Rashid was previously allowed to attend Parliament and that he was losing every day as he was unable to attend the session due to the huge costs. Rashid sought interim bail or custody parole with travel expenses to carry out his duty as a parliamentarian. Custody parole entails a prisoner being escorted by armed police personnel to the place of visit. On July 22, the trial court granted custody parole to Rashid to attend the Monsoon session from July 24 to August 4, subject to payment of travel expenses. Rashid, who defeated Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, is facing allegations that he funded separatists and terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the NIA's FIR, Rashid's name cropped up during the interrogation of businessman and co-accused Zahoor Watali. After being charge-sheeted in October 2019, a special NIA court framed charges against Rashid and others in March 2022 under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against the government), and 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code and for offences relating to terrorist acts and terror funding under the UAPA.

Karnataka deputy CM's remarks reflect Congress culture: Sawant

In an unusually harsh remark, Shivakumar on Thursday claimed that Sawant had 'lost his mental balance" and said Karnataka would proceed with the Mahadayi river project, an emotive issue in neighbouring Goa. He claimed that Sawant was not aware of the federal structure. Shivakumar's comments came after Sawant told the assembly earlier that Goa would move the Supreme Court against Karnataka for continuing work on the project on the river, pronounced as 'Mhadei' in Goa, despite the matter being heard by the apex court. Talking to reporters in Panaji on Friday, Sawant said Shivakumar's statements reflect the Congress culture. 'We have been pursuing our demand to save Mhadei from being diverted, before the Supreme Court and the Centre," the chief minister said. 'He (Shivakumar) is showing the Congress culture. We are serious about the issue. We will continue our communication with the centre," he said. 'When someone is frustrated, they utter such words," he said, adding that Congress leaders in Karnataka are competing amongst themselves on how low they can stoop. Goa has been opposing Karnataka's Kalasa-Banduri projects in the Mahadayi river basin. The Kalasa-Banduri project by the Karnataka government proposes diverting Mahadayi river water into the Malaprabha river to enhance the drinking water supply in parts of Dharwad, Belagavi, Bagalkote, and Gadag districts.
