Governor for 3-pronged strategy to combat climate change

Hyderabad: In a strong push for climate action, Governor of Telangana Jishnu Dev Varma, called for a focused three-pronged strategy to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs). The Governor emphasised that this approach would significantly benefit the economy, environment and society at large. Echoing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—who has united the global community on climate action and continues to lead efforts both domestically and internationally—the Governor underlined the urgent need for coordinated efforts across key sectors. The Governor stressed the involvement of all relevant departments, including Energy, Transport, Buildings, Rural and Urban Development, Industry, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in promoting renewable energy and accelerating energy efficiency measures. 'Energy Efficiency alone can contribute over 40 per cent in mitigating climate change impacts,' he noted. As part of this climate roadmap, the Governor proposed: Aggressive afforestation efforts led by the Forest and Environment Department, with a long-term target to increase Telangana's green cover to 50 per cent by 2047. Mass awareness campaigns involving all stakeholders—public and private—with a special focus on women and students through schools, colleges, and universities to promote energy conservation and sustainable practices. As part of ongoing outreach efforts, A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Southern Regional Media Adviser to BEE, along with Sr officers of EESL briefed the Governor on key developments in the field of energy efficiency. He outlined the scope of BEE's Standards and Labelling (S&L) programme, under which 39 appliances—16 of them mandatory, including air conditioners, fans, and refrigerators—are covered.

23 cos setting up campuses in new tech hub: Babul Supriyo

Kolkata: Twenty-three companies, including and L&T, have started construction of their buildings at Bengal Silicon Valley (BSV), an upcoming tech hub in New Town, while NTT, ST Telemedia and CtrlS data centres are on the verge of launching their operations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This was revealed by state IT and electronics minister during an interaction with IT industry stakeholders on Friday. Urging private tech firms to adopt a startup each for improving Bengal's IT ecosystem, the minister said: "About 41 companies have taken plots at BSV spread over 250 acres. The construction work of five companies is nearing completion while 23 companies are in different stages of construction. We will bring an amended version of the existing IT policy. We are also working on global capability centre and semiconductor policies. " The state was looking at an investment of Rs 30,000-35,000 crore from the companies setting up units at BSV, Supriyo said. Speaking on incentives for manufacturing units, he said: "The land price at BSV is Rs 40 crore per acre, but govt has given it for Rs 5 crore per acre. We are not thinking about any more subsidy." Representatives of TCS, Capgemini and British Telecom urged Supriyo for a change in the syllabus of degree and diploma engineering to tide over the dearth of skilled workforce in the city. "When we recruit passouts, they are not industry-ready. We have to look at workforce outside the state," said Monojit Sengupta, a representative from TCS. Responding to this, Supriyo said: "Webel and tech education department are coordinating on the issue. We are open to suggestions from IT companies for introducing new chapters or courses in the syllabus."

Delhi Cuts Commercial Property Charges To Match Gurugram, Noida Rates

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved significant cuts to commercial property charges in a move aimed at making the Capital more competitive with neighbouring Gurugram and Noida. The decisions, cleared during a meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, are expected to encourage more commercial development within Delhi, where high charges have long been seen as a deterrent. Amalgamation Charges Cut from 10% to 1% One of the key decisions is a drastic reduction in amalgamation charges for commercial properties-from 10% of the circle rate to just 1%. This will make it significantly cheaper for developers to combine smaller plots and undertake larger commercial projects, something that had become far more viable in cities like Noida and Gurugram due to their lower charges. Officials acknowledge that the earlier structure made large-scale projects in Delhi financially unattractive, pushing developers to invest in neighbouring NCR towns instead. Auction Pricing Factor Reduced The DDA also approved a reduction in the multiplication factor used in the auction of commercial properties - from twice the circle rate to 1.5 times. This is expected to bring down the base price for auctions, potentially attracting more bidders and increasing developer participation in Delhi's commercial real estate sector. Both decisions follow recommendations from a government-industry task force formed by the L-G's office, which found that high costs and rigid regulations were key reasons for the city falling behind its NCR counterparts in terms of commercial development. Focus on Narela Development The Authority also cleared several proposals aimed at boosting development in the underdeveloped Narela sub-city: Change of Land Use: Approval was granted to convert land in sectors G-3, G-4, G-7, and G-8 for establishing a multi-sports stadium and an education hub. Discounts on Unsold Flats: Government agencies and universities purchasing at least 10 flats in Narela will now receive the same discounts as individual buyers - 25% for LIG flats and 15% for MIG, HIG, and EWS units. Premium Housing Scheme 2025: A new scheme will offer 177 residential flats and garages in localities such as Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Rohini, Pitampura, Jasola, and Ashoka Pahari via e-auction. Support for Signature View Residents: DDA will provide monthly rent assistance of Rs 50,000 for HIG flats and Rs 38,000 for MIG flats to residents of the unsafe Signature View Apartments during reconstruction. Real estate developers have constantly flagged that Delhi's commercial property rules were outdated and cost-heavy. The latest reforms attempt to correct that imbalance, especially at a time when Delhi has been losing out on commercial investment to nearby cities. While the move signals a shift in DDA's approach toward more developer-friendly policies, its impact will depend on how quickly these changes are implemented - and whether they lead to a visible uptick in commercial construction within the city.
