Exports of new climate change resilient apple tipped to nearly double this year
The 'Sassy' apple which was bred by Plant and Food Research has proven to have a long storage and shelf life.

The 'Sassy' apple was bred by Plant and Food Research and is being grown by Taylor Corp in Hawke's Bay and the Golden Bay Fruit company. It can tolerate warmer climates while still developing good red colouring even during hotter summers.
That represents a major success for Plant & Food Research apple breeder Richard Volz who started developing 'Sassy' back in 2001.
"It was a little bit by chance that we found it, because it's not often that we find those sorts of apples. It's difficult to breed for a future hot climate in New Zealand when, compared with many other parts of the world, we have a moderate climate," he said.

Volz describes the Sassy apple as being a vibrant block red colour, with a zesty flavour that ripens early in the season. It's also proven to have a long storage and shelf life, and natural resilience in the orchard.
"Sassy is unique because it colours often in February in Hawke's Bay when it can be quite warm, and many apples struggle for colour.
"We have to have good colour in our fruit particularly for the Asian market. It was identified early on that this is an apple that colours well every year even when it's warm - so it could be good for other hot climates," Volz said.
The new apple variety was introduced to the market by Prevar, a joint venture between Plant & Food Research, New Zealand Apples and Pears Inc and Apples and Pears Australia Ltd established to commercialise new apple and pear varieties.
The global license is held by NGA, a joint venture between growers Golden Bay Fruit and Taylor Corp, who are working together to export Sassy to consumers all over the world.

Exports of the zesty block red apple are forecast to nearly double this season to 1.8 million kilograms, and the variety is now being sold to over 10 countries. Volz said it's been a very rewarding project.
"It's the kind of success that reminds us why we do this work, to create varieties that truly make a difference for growers, exporters, and consumers," he said.
Taylor Corp owner Kelvin Taylor told RNZ he was excited about the apple's future as it was now being grown in nurseries in South Africa, China, Europe and the UK.
"The volumes are going to shoot up pretty quickly once these other countries get involved with it, they're all saying the flavour of it and the colouring is outstanding," he said.
During the peak of the season, the Taylor Corp packhouse processes about 3000 apples a minute through its new machines that sort through the crop - picking the best fruit for export and sending the blemished apples off to be juiced.

Kelvin's been growing apples for over 50 years, and said climate change was certainly something they had to consider when choosing what to plant.
"It's a totally different way you have to look at things now, it's a challenge," he said.
One of the many challenges in a warming climate is disease and pests, so Plant and Food Research are working on new varieties that are more resistant to both, and will require less spraying.
"That's an important part of our work. As the climate changes in future some of those pests and disease pressures for growers are going to get worse and worse so we need to be doing that," Volz said.

Indian business community divided on trespass law reforms

Some welcomed the move as a step toward better protection from retail crime, while others remained uncertain about its practical impact. Under the proposed changes , franchises would be able to trespass individuals from multiple locations, while the maximum duration and fines for trespass notices would double. The reforms come just days after the government introduced tougher penalties for shoplifting as part of a broader crackdown on retail crime . "We know our trespass laws are no longer fit for purpose," Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said. "They're difficult to enforce and often criminals take no notice," he said. "They return with impunity and just continue to rob businesses of their livelihoods." He said the government would look at how best to support retailers in issuing trespass notices before the legislation was introduced, particularly when offenders refused to cooperate. "I don't see anything new, just that the trespass notices and the penalties have been increased and that's pretty much it," Kandhari said. "The actual impact will happen when it comes down to enforcement," he said. "That's the real challenge, and that hasn't been solved." Kandhari preferred to see even tougher penalties, including potential imprisonment. "I'm not sure increasing the notice period and raising the infringement from $1000 to $2000 will make any substantial difference," he said. Rajesh Goel, president of the Auckland Indian Retailers Association, also questioned whether police had capacity to enforce the new laws. "I'm not quite sure how this is going to work," Goel said. "In South Auckland, we have a lot of problems with homelessness and people with mental health issues," he said. "We can't just keep issuing trespass notices - I don't think they'll follow them either." However, he acknowledged the government was moving in the right direction. Photo: Supplied Jithin Chittibomma, chair of the Sandringham Business Association, said the reforms were more suitable for large retailers than for small family-owned shops. "Trespass notices in general are irrelevant to small retailers," Chittibomma said. "They're more useful for supermarkets who can use AI, facial recognition and all of that," he said. "For small dairy shops, it's still the police that matter - and response times haven't improved." Chittibomma said the coalition government had made some progress in tackling retail crime, and the current reforms were a good starting point. "These are the first significant changes we've seen in the last 10 years," he said. "Definitely a step in the right direction in my opinion but we'll have to wait for the data to see if they make a difference." Harish Lodhia, director of Sona Sansaar jewellery store, said the changes were "long overdue". "We welcome these changes," he said. "Hopefully the crime rate in this country comes back to pre-Covid levels." Lodhia, who has issued trespass notices in the past, said it was "necessary" in some cases. "We don't want to put anyone into problems unless it's a serious thing they've done," he said. Himanshu Parmar, a member of the government's ministerial advisory group on retail crime, said the changes were part of a broader plan to improve protection for businesses. "The government, along with the ministerial advisory group, is adding more layers to give retailers better protection," he said. "Actions must have consequences." "The Trespass Act is a key tool retailers rely on to keep offenders out, but it's 57 years old and out of date," Kaushal said. Kaushal disagreed with the suggestion that the reforms wouldn't help small businesses. "It's basically for everyone, big or small," he said. "Every business can issue these notices and, if people don't cooperate, they will face consequences." He added that giving franchises power to issue trespass notices across multiple locations would be a "gamechanger" for small convenience stores and petrol stations. Asked whether he was pushing the government to fast-track the legislation, Kaushal said he was as hard as he could. "We are a democratic country, and we have to respect the parliamentary process," he said. He said Goldsmith had assured him the legislation would move forward in a couple of months. Once passed, Kaushal said, police would be required to enforce it. "This is a very old piece of legislation that's no longer working," he said. "But it's an important tool that every retailer in New Zealand relies on," he said. "We need to update it so offenders think twice before they do anything."

NZ-designed apples miss trick by omitting FernMark branding in Canada

Canadian consumers have actively boycotted US products, since President Donald Trump launched his trade war , along with ongoing calls to make Canada the 51st state of America. T&G Global's premium Envy and Jazz apples exported to Canada were packaged in 2.27 kg (5lb) bags, with prominent 'product of USA' labelling, and were not immune to the consumer backlash. T&G chief operating officer for the apples business Shane Kingston said the brands were grown in more than 11 countries, across both hemispheres. "This also diversifies our geographical spread, and ensures varieties are grown in the right regions and close to markets," he said, adding that sales met expectations. "Currently, around 31 percent of T&G's apple supply is sourced from Aotearoa New Zealand, 37 percent from the Americas, 23 percent from Europe and the United Kingdom, and 9 percent from other markets." While Envy and Jazz apples sold in Canada were imported from southern hemisphere locations and Washington State, they were designed in New Zealand and were eligible to carry the New Zealand Inc trademark. FernMark brand manager David Downs said the lack of New Zealand branding was a missed opportunity, given that it could be applied to any product designed, grown or made in New Zealand. "That intellectual property was developed here and there is definitely a connection to New Zealand that should be highlighted," said Downs, who was also the chief executive of NZ Story, which - a government agency tasked with helping market New Zealand to the world. "It's actually a great example of New Zealand innovation." "It's interesting, isn't it, that consumer sentiment can shift pretty quickly," Downs said, referring to the trade dispute in North America. "Someone in Canada suddenly being suspicious of not wanting to buy products from the United States or from another country, because of their perceived activities." He said the FernMark had been independently valued at more than US$290 billlion (NZ$478b), although the licence to use it cost relatively little for qualifying companies. "What the FernMark does is basically visibly allow you to connect your brand with the brand of New Zealand, and that visible connection and association allows you to get that value from the hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of brand value that we have as a country." He said the number of companies using New Zealand's FernMark to promote their products had more than doubled over the past couple of years and featured on products in more than 40 countries. More than 600 companies used the FernMark on some two billion products, with food products one of the biggest users. "Some of those companies are very, very big, with tens of thousands of SKU's [stock items]." Recent research indicated 46 percent of international consumers recognised the FernMark, and 44 percent said they were more likely or a lot more likely to buy a product because it. "More and more in this disrupted world, reputation is what matters," Downs said. "For us, for a relatively small economy like New Zealand, it's important we protect our reputation. "That's not the job of just politicians. It's also the job of exporters and all of us." Cost of living pressures top of mind for government, PM Luxon says

Photo: RNZ / Reece Baker The government has ticked off most of its action plan for the last quarter, as it turns to the next with a continued focus on the cost of living. In its report card for the last three months, two items were listed as 'in progress': The AI strategy is expected to be released in the coming weeks, and further decisions on capital market settings were expected in the next quarter. One change that has been made was to reduce the listing costs on firms by making the publication of their prospective financial information voluntary. Turning to the next quarter, a statement from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said continuing to address cost of living pressures over the coming months was key. Luxon said the government was taking action on the cost of food, housing, banking and energy to "drive a better bargain" for New Zealand families. "While it's still tough out there for too many Kiwis, our Government's focus on unlocking economic growth is starting to show some promise with key indicators up across the board." He said it wasn't enough for businesses to grow and invest. "New Zealanders deserve an economy that works for them, with more competition and lower prices," Luxon said. The next quarter will see the repeal of the oil and gas exploration ban, next steps to improve supermarket competition and further changes to the RMA. Luxon said repealing the ban would "unleash the energy" the country needed to "keep the lights on and prevent power prices from skyrocketing in the years to come". "The cost of housing is also a priority, with significant improvements to the RMA enabling more construction in our biggest cities expected to become law," he said. The government will also look to publish the first standards allowing the use of overseas building products in the country. The Public Works (Critical Infrastructure) Amendment Bill will be passed, which will streamline the process to acquire land for big projects. Legislation will be introduced to "strengthen governance and planning arrangements" at Auckland Transport. Under law and order, the government will look to progress legislation that makes stalking an illegal offence, and introduce legislation that deters "anti-social road use." Changes to the electoral system are on the way, including introducing a ban on prisoner voting, and the government will begin delivering rehabilitation and reintegration services to remand prisoners. Cabinet will consider decisions on legislation to "affirm police's authority to collect, use and retain information about individuals in public places for lawful policing purposes". Other actions under better public services include starting to deliver additional elective procedures, and opening an expression of interest for 120 nurse practitioner training places. The government will also implement its funding increase for GP clinics and the first prototypes for the expansion of urgent care for rural and remote areas. Legislation that will give effect to the ECE Regulation Sector Review will be introduced and key policy decisions taken to tighten the eligibility for income support for 18/19 year olds.
