Leonardo DiCaprio comes under fierce fire for investing in luxury hotel in Israel

Daily Mail3 days ago
Leonardo DiCaprio has come under fierce fire for investing in a luxury hotel in Israel after the eco-resort received final approval to begin construction.
The Hollywood actor, 50, owns a reported 10 percent stake in the upscale resort, which will be built along Herzliya Marina – a high-end beachfront.
The independent project, originally announced in 2018, is being developed by Israel's Hagag Group alongside businessmen Ahikam and Lior Cohen, per Complex.
The Tel Aviv District Planning and Building Committee granted final approval on July 27 after the project was first announced in 2018 and received preliminary deposit approval in 2024.
The massive $270 million complex will span a staggering 12.6 acres, far beyond the initial 2.5 acres, and will rise up to 14 stories high, per Globes.
It is set to include 365 hotel rooms, conference center, fine dining restaurant, swimming pool, and direct yacht access to the marina.
An additional two acres of underground space has been approved for parking and hotel operations.
Despite the scale, developers insist the hotel will be built with sustainability at its core.
Leo, who has spent years promoting environmental awareness, has aligned the project with the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED standards.
This means it will implement sustainable practices across energy efficiency, water conservation, site selection, materials use, and indoor environmental quality.
He promised an eco-friendly build that will 'work in partnership with nature,' per a 2018 statement by the actor, according to JFeed.
No official construction date has been released yet, but plans suggest the resort will become a major luxury destination.
The project initially got underway almost seven years ago, before the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in Gaza in October 2023.
The conflict is ongoing and has since escalated into a regional crisis, with mounting casualties, humanitarian catastrophe, and rising tensions.
Many fans of the actor found the hotel 'tone deaf' given the current state of Israel.
'Yikes. Not a great look. Won't be watching anything of his from now on,' a user wrote on a Reddit post.

Despite the criticism, a few people expressed their excitement at the hotel's announcement
Others simply branded it as 'gross' and 'disgusting.'
Someone else commented a picture of a trash can lid, writing, 'Dropped your crown, Eco King.'
'So the environmental activism was just an act, should've known. If he has to build a luxury hotel, why there??' a person asked.
'I just don't see why people constantly fawn over this dude… he clearly doesn't care about the environment,' another slammed.
On a second thread about the hotel, someone wrote: 'Wow. I was never a huge fan of him, but yikes.'
Other comments read, 'Yikes, my guy,' 'What is with celebs being so openly gross?' and 'Eco-friendly? With a nation that is starving children? This is a choice.'
Someone else wrote: 'That's insane. Leo covered his face when walking with Jeff Bezos and his wife, but he has no shame in continuing his plans to build a luxury hotel in a country that is currently committing an ethnic cleansing on their neighbors.'
However, there were some who expressed their excitement at the hotel's announcement.
'Can't wait,' someone wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
'Amaaazing,' another shared.
Others appeared to toast to the decision using an iconic gif of Leo in his Great Gatsby role.
Leo has been a passionate advocate for the environment for years, speaking out about everything from climate change to wildlife protection.
Through his foundation, Re:wild, he's donated over $200 million to environmental causes around the world.

Inside the Italian island celebs are choosing over St Tropez - and it's also home to Princess Diana's favourite hotel

There's a glamorous Italian island that celebrities are flocking to instead of other dreamy locations like St Tropez and Monaco. Sardinia has become the destination of choice for A-listers and the ultra-wealthy. With spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters and a rich history, it's no wonder the Mediterranean island is attracting stars - desperate to tie the knot. Last summer, Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and his now wife, Lauren Sanchez, soaked up the sun in Sardinia, after sailing around aboard Bezos' Koru superyacht. They were accompanied by Leonardo DiCaprio, his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, as well as Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom. Sardinia is where on-off couple Tom Brady and Irina Shayk first met too, reportedly 'clicking' at the lavish $13 million wedding of billionaire Joe Nahmad in May 2023. Tom and Irina partied alongside famous faces like tennis pros Serena and Venus Williams, designer Tommy Hilfiger, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio It's also been said at President Joe Biden's daughter Ashley Biden was in attendance, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton, according to a local news outlet. The ceremony took place in a structure built at the foot of Monte Moro. It began in the afternoon and went on until 'late at night,' the publication reported. It was followed by a celebration at the glamorous Hotel Cala di Volpe in the coastal area of Costa Smeralda - where rooms cost a whopping $3,924 a night - the following day. Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma also tied the knot in Sardinia last September too, in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their nearest and dearest. As for other stars visiting the island, Paris Hilton went on a luxurious yachting trip to Sardinia with her children in June. And last year, British actress Gemma Arterton was spotted enjoying a local beach. Now, Jennifer Lopez is confirmed to be jetting there this summer. The American singer and songwriter will be performing at Cala di Volpe's annual August Gala. The Gala Night is a highlight of the season, with Mariah Carey headlining last year, and Imagine Dragons the year before the. But that's not the starriest part of the hotel, located near Pontili e Gavitelli and Costa Smeralda. With spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters and a rich history, it's no wonder the Mediterranean island is attracting stars The property featured in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, as Bond (Sir Roger Moore) and Soviet agent Triple-X Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) were seen walking through the hotel The property featured in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, as Bond (Sir Roger Moore) and Soviet agent Triple-X Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) were seen walking through the hotel. Other A-list guests who've frequented the venue include Beyonce, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Justin Bieber. Princess Diana visited Cala di Volpe too, and reportedly said it was her favourite hotel. The royal stayed in the mega suite, which now costs $40,000 (£30k) per night, with Dodi Al-Fayed during their last holiday together back in 1997. In keeping with the glamorous island and its guests, Dolce & Gabbana partnered with DG Resort to transform Cala di Volpe this summer.

Dubai ruler installed solar panels ‘without planning permission'

The billionaire ruler of Dubai has built solar panels on his sprawling Highland estate without planning permission, The Telegraph can reveal. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum installed the eco-friendly technology on the Inverinate estate to improve the 'sustainability performance' of one of the properties. The estate is on the banks of Loch Duich, which is a special area of conservation and home to wildlife including deer, Eurasian otters, pipistrelles, and western European hedgehogs. His representatives are now seeking retrospective planning permission for the plans, which also include an additional room for staff and a new road. Sheikh Mohammed is a strong supporter of solar energy and has spearheaded the development of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, the world's largest single-site solar park. But the plans come amid growing questions from locals after long periods of construction work on the 63,000-acre estate. A design statement included with the plans states: 'Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels have been installed on the roof to enhance the building's sustainability performance in line with national and local renewable energy goals. Their location ensures minimal visual impact.' The 74-year-old bought the estate in Wester Ross – which boasts three helipads and a pool – more than 20 years ago and usually visits once or twice a year. Sheikh Mohammed has undertaken a vast expansion of the estate in recent years and was recently given permission for a tenth property on the site with 15 bedrooms, a large living room and dining room area, and a conservatory. His representatives say that he has been expanding the number of buildings on his land in recent years to make more room for guests and staff. 'He's rarely in Scotland' One local told The Telegraph: 'I think he has been good to the local community, but he's rarely in Scotland, so why the constant expansion on the estate?' Another pointed out that construction work 'has become a little bit too much in recent years for an estate which doesn't appear to be used much.' In 2020 he won a planning battle to build a six-bedroom lodge at the estate after the Scottish Government overruled the council, which blocked the application in the wake of more than 30 local objections. The application was approved on the condition that the Sheikh's property firm paid £30,000 towards local affordable housing. Sheikh Mohammed, who also owns several vast estates in Essex, Surrey, and Suffolk, is one of the UK's biggest landowners and one of the world's richest men, valued at £11bn. Meanwhile, Scotland has some of the most concentrated land ownership in the West, with half of all private land owned by just 400 people. Richard Scott, the 10th Duke of Buccleuch, owns about 200,000 acres of land, whilst Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen, who owns the global clothing chain Bestseller, owns over 220,000 acres of land. A statement from his representatives submitted to Highland Council said: 'This retrospective application reflects necessary and beneficial modifications made during the construction and operational planning phases. 'The proposed changes are minor in scale relative to the approved development and are fully justified in terms of functional necessity, sustainability, and design integrity. 'We respectfully request that The Highland Council support this application.'

First Thing: Stock markets fall as US announces new tariff rates on dozens of countries

Good morning. Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on imports from dozens of trade partners, in his latest attempt to reshape the global economy. However, in a minor reprieve that opens the door to further negotiations, the White House said these measures would take effect in a week, not Friday, the deadline previously set by Trump. The new rates, which Trump sees as benefiting US exporters, unleash a fresh round of uncertainty for dozens of countries, including longtime US allies. It has also raised fears of inflation in the US. Which countries have higher rates? Rates were set at 25% for India's US-bound exports, 20% for Taiwan and 30% for South Africa. Switzerland faces a rate of 39%. The deadline for a tariff deal with Mexico was extended by another 90 days. The mathematics of famine are simple in Gaza. Palestinians cannot leave, war has ended farming and Israel has banned fishing, so practically every calorie its population eats must be brought in from outside. Israel knows how much food is needed. It has been calibrating hunger in Gaza for decades, initially calculating shipments to exert pressure while avoiding starvation. 'The idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger,' a senior adviser to the then prime minister, Ehud Olmert, said in 2006. An Israeli court ordered the release of documents showing the details of those macabre sums two years later. What has Israel said? As Gaza has slid into famine this summer, Israeli officials have variously denied the existence of mass starvation, claimed without evidence that Hamas steals and hoards aid, or blamed hunger on UN distribution failures, sharing pictures of aid pallets awaiting collection inside the border. The siblings of Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein's most prominent accusers, who died this year, said their sister had wanted the so-called Epstein files to be released, and urged Trump not to pardon Epstein's longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell. In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Giuffre's family said she would have wanted the documents – a trove of materials related to the investigation into the late sex offender – made public. 'She had a little bit of hope in her because it was said that the files were going to be released,' Amanda Roberts, Giuffre's sister-in-law, told the network in an interview, saying Giuffre would have wanted 'transparency and justice' for his victims. What did they say about Trump's comments this week that Epstein 'stole' Giuffre and others from Mar-a-Lago? 'She's not an object, she's a person,' Sky Roberts, Giuffre's brother, said through tears. 'She's a mom. She's a sister. And she was recruited by Maxwell. She wasn't stolen.' Joe Biden said the US was facing an 'existential' fight and marginalized groups were 'dramatically under attack'. The former president said some politicians watched deportations of legal immigrants with 'glee', in a speech to the National Bar Association gala. Justin Timberlake has said he is suffering from Lyme disease, a serious illness usually contracted after being bitten by a tick. There has been an upsurge in prevalence of the disease across a swathe of the US in recent years. The historian Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said professor emeritus of modern Arab studies at Columbia University, has cancelled plans to teach this fall, in response to the school's recent agreement with the Trump administration. The White House will soon begin construction of a new $200m ballroom to be ready before Donald Trump's term ends in early 2029. The press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said the building would be 90,000 sq ft (8,300 sq metres) and would hold up to 650 seats. It will be the latest change introduced to what's known as 'the People's House' since the Republican president returned to office in January. The actor was born 100 years ago – and his performances still induce hysteria today. Fans and collaborators such as Michael Palin, Woody Allen and Lesley-Anne Down explain why. 'Spike was the imaginative genius who wrote The Goon Show but it was Sellers who brought me to tears with his gallery of unforgettable characters: Major Bloodnok, Bluebottle, Henry Crun, Hercules Grytpype-Thynne,' Palin says. A 2024 mass monarch butterfly die-off in southern California was probably caused by pesticide exposure, new peer-reviewed research finds. Researchers discovered hundreds of butterflies that had died or were dying in January 2024. Testing of 10 of the insects revealed an average of seven pesticides in each, and at levels that researchers suspect were lethal. Since hitting the market in 2019, Labubus have become a global phenomenon. Their popularity has been fueled by social media posts of live unboxings that showcase rare collections. Launches of new editions sell out on Pop Mart within minutes, sending the company's profits soaring over the past year. Avid collectors say that acquiring the dolls has become almost like a 'social currency', according to one meet-up attender. First Thing is delivered to thousands of inboxes every weekday.
