Beware the Sussex stink! Families living on the south coast plagued by 'rich and potent' stench coming in from the sea

Daily Mail2 days ago
Pungent cheeses are one thing. And we've learned to put up with a whiff of garlic or onions here and there.
But now the French have truly outdone themselves on the nose-wrinkling stakes after a cloud of foul-smelling gas wafted over the Channel.
The stinky air - dubbed 'Le Pong' - has left exasperated Britons on the south coast retching in disgust.
Emergency services in Sussex were swamped with calls from worried locals fearing some sort of environmental disaster. Things were so bad, it even saw the coastguard being scrambled on Tuesday evening.
However, besieged residents have been told the stench is not due to some catastrophe - but done to the French.
The 'rich and potent' gas cloud, said to smell of sweat and rotten eggs, drifted over from a factory in the northern French city of Rouen.
The smell is so bad, locals have reported breathing problems and streaming eyes.
It's not the first time the south coast has been plagued by 'Le Pong' - a similar incident happened in 2013, sparking outrage.
As locals demand answers, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they believe the smell is coming from the sea.
Councillor Paul Wells of Bognor Regis Town Council said: 'Can't seem to get anything out of anybody about what it might be but it seems to be spreading across the south coast.
'It's a very rich, potent gas small. It's making people feel faint.
'Shops have been contacting us looking for advice and the gas board is overloaded with calls.
'There have been reports in Chichester, Bognor and Littlehampton and more from social media.
'People want some answers.'
A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We have had a number of calls from people along the south coast concerned they can smell gas.
'It is believed that this might be coming from offshore, rather than a local domestic gas leak.
'We would always encourage anyone who thinks they smell gas to contact their utilities provider.
'If you begin to feel unwell, always dial 999 for emergency medical care.'
Last month, Bognor Regis was crowned the sunniest place in Britain by the Met Office, after receiving more than 1,900 hours of sunshine a year.
Its long beach, as well as Butlins resort, are a major draw for the town.
However, the stench now blighting the area could prompt tourists to turn their noses up at visiting the seaside resort.
Some residents said the whiff smelled of sweat and rotten eggs, while others compared it to stale cabbage, garlic or diesel fumes.
A spokesman for gas company SGN, said: 'We've received several calls this afternoon regarding a smell in the air in the Bognor Regis area.
'Our engineers are responding to individual reports, but there's nothing so far to suggest the smell is coming from our network.'
The coastguard confirmed it was called at 5.20pm on Tuesday after reports of a 'gas and diesel' smell at Selsey Bill.
'Investigations found no evidence of anything untoward,' a spokesperson said.
MailOnline has contacted Lubrizol - which runs the factory in Rouen - to see if there has been another leak at its facility.

Comedian reveals 'horrendous' side effect of weight loss jab Mounjaro 'no one mentions' - and the extreme way he covers it up

A comedian has revealed a lesser-known 'horrendous' side effect of the weight loss jab Mounjaro - and he's resorted to desperate measures to cover it up. Appearing on the Have A Word podcast, comedian Will Thompson described his experience with the GLP-1 medication, which helps people lose weight by reducing appetite. But as thousands of Britons turn to the jabs to help them slim down, here's been a steady stream of side effects being shared and discussed by the jabber community. These typically include chronic constipation, hair loss, loss of libido and extreme bloating. But there's one 'horrendous' side effect Will said he never sees mentioned. 'The one that no one really mentions is the burps are horrendous,' the comedian said. 'I've done farts to cover up some of the burps I've done.' These are known as 'sulphur burps', and are typically characterised by an unpleasant rotten egg smell. They occur due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas, which can be a byproduct of digestion or the result of an underlying gastrointestinal issue. Mounjaro keeps you feeling full by slowing down how quickly food is digested, which could be the cause of this unpleasant side effect. Discussing his decision to take the weight loss drug, Will said it is 'fully cheating and I don't give a f***'. He said: 'Because people tell you that, they're like 'no, its not hard work, you're cheating'. 'But I'm not an athlete, I'm not training for anything, I just can't be arsed. 'I could not stop eating badly.' The comedian said the biggest impact of Mounjaro is the lack of 'food noise'. Will said: 'How I described it was Twixes don't speak to me anymore. It's f***ing great. 'You know when you're in a garage and you see all the sweets. Now you show me and I'm just not bothered. 'Don't get me wrong there's side effects to doing it.'

The 79-year-old president sparked some concern when he was recently spotted with concealer on his hands covering up discolored skin on Wednesday. 3 The White House has given an update on Donald Trump's health Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 3 Trump sparked some concern when makeup appeared to be covering his hand on Wednesday Credit: AFP or licensors 3 Trump's hand is seen during a White House meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in February Credit: Getty Images - Getty Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Leavitt downplayed the bruises, saying they were the result of a chronic and harmless vein condition. She said the Commander in Chief has "chronic venous insufficiency," which can cause swelling and discoloration in the ankles and hands. The blood circulation issue is primarily seen in people over 70 and more than 200,000 cases are reported each year, according to Mayo Clinic. It was caught after Trump noticed "mild swelling" and underwent ultrasounds and a "comprehensive exam," Leavitt said. The press secretary explained that the "minor soft tissue irritation" was exacerbated by "frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin." She acknowledged that pictures taken of the president recently captured the bruising. 'In the effort of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his physician with all of you today,' Leavitt told reporters. 'Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease. "An echocardiogram was also performed and confirmed normal cardiac structure and function, no signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified additionally.' The health update comes after the president passed his annual physical exam with flying colors in April. At the time, White House physician Sean Barbabella said, "President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State." Trump's discolored hand was first noticed in February during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. More to follow... What is Lumpy Skin Disease?: The cattle condition that's causing a cheese shortage 'crisis'

Rags Martel finds out how London's cheesemongers are coping with the temporary ban on unpasteurised soft cheeses made in Italy and France London, and the rest of the UK, could be (brie) facing a cheese shortage. An outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease -LSD for short - in cows in Italy and France has led the UK to temporarily banning imports of unpasteurised soft cheeses made in the two countries after May 23. It means some cheesemongers, who rely on these imports could be facing a shortage - with some reporting thousands of pounds worth of produce not being allowed into the UK and going off at the border. Mons Cheesemongers, which sells French and Swiss cheese across London, told ITV News that the ban is a "nusaince". Their East Dulwich shop has run out of Brie and fears Camembert will be finished by the end of the week too. It's meant they're losing out on sales, to the farm shops and delis they supply and that customers are not getting the cheeses they want. There are fears the ban will continue for much longer. Cheesemonger Andrew Postlethwaite said: " I think it would be pretty devastating to imagine a Christmas without raw milk, cow's cheese. "I feel potentially people don't quite realize how much of, how much raw milk French cheese they eat at Christmas, and what a big part of British culture - we've been eating French cheese since far longer than we've been drinking tea." The disease sees bovines covered in lesions, leads to a drop in milk production, immaciation and even death in rare cases. A Defra spokesperson said: 'This government will do whatever it takes to protect British farmers and their herds from disease. "We have strengthened protections by temporarily suspending imports of a small amount of products from Italy and France, following outbreaks of lumpy skin disease across Europe. "Unpasteurised cheeses are restricted, but as most Italian cheeses, such as Parmesan, Mozzarella, and Gorgonzola, are pasteurised this should not have a significant impact on supply chains." Some cheesemongers, have argued that the rules are too strict. Patricia Michelson, who runs La Fromagerie, has lost thousands of pounds worth of produce at the border, she told The Times. She argues that France's dairy industry is carrying on as normal, as their government tested the infected milk and found it "not be diseased in any way". Ms Michelson said: "If DEFRA wants to protect their herds in the UK then banning live animals is absolutely correct as a precaution. "Dairy herds (in the UK) are perfectly safe from French and Italian made dairy products. "EU due diligence is already rigorous but the new UK paperwork duplicates it at cost, causes delays, and adds confusion—especially at poorly managed UK entry points. "It also poses huge delays at the final import gateway in the UK. "Unless DEFRA has proof that all milk products from France and Italy are affected by LSD, we deserve clarity. "For importers, this isn't trivial—it's costly, illogical, and deeply frustrating. " But for London businesses, who sell cheese that's made in the UK, it could be a chance for their products to take centre stage. Bath Soft Cheese Co, which sells its products in London's Borough Market, is hoping they can step out of France's shadow and promote their cheese, made on a farm in Kelston with milk from their own cows. Bath Soft Cheese, Shop Manager Damien Johnson told ITV News London: "It is a bit of a crisis. "We'd like to think there would be a knock-on effect that it would give us an opportunity to promote the diversity of British cheeses and what we already produce and sell in the UK.""We hope that they contain the outbreak, mainly for the impact on the animals above all else, but we hope that it gives us an opportunity to showcase ourselves in the meantime while they sort out the problem."We don't have the fame for cheese like France or Italy does, so I think people are pleasantly surprised to find that there is a significant range of British cheeses, that can maybe replace for a period of time, the French cheeses that are no longer being shipped to the UK on people's cheese boards."
