‘Virtually ran the college': TMC student wing member accused in rape case had free run of institute even after graduating
Monojit Misra, the main accused in the rape of a student at a Kolkata law college, is a member of the ruling TMC's student wing and a former president of its college unit who wielded immense clout in the campus even after completing his graduation.
Misra, 31, was among three people arrested in the case. The two other arrested persons, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), are also members of the college's Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit and Misra's associates.
The Indian Express spoke to current and former students as well as local TMC members who alleged a string of offences on campus by Misra, his outsized influence there, and his flaunted closeness to local party leaders.
Students pointed to the fact that the college's governing body — its president is TMC MLA Ashok Deb — appointed Misra as a 'casual' clerical staffer after he had passed out.
'Misra was the TMCP unit president in the college before he passed out. Earlier, he was accused of ransacking CCTVs put up by the authorities in the old campus of the college. Even in the new campus, he was accused of abducting a student of a rival TMCP faction,' alleged a former student.
'He was suspended twice for all this. But after he passed out, he was appointed as a casual clerical staff by the governing body of the college,' said this person, who is also a TMCP member.
The person said: 'Misra formed a gang of students in the college. He called it Team MM. The two other accused persons are members of this group.'
Indeed, a graffiti on one of the college walls reads: 'Monojit da is in our hearts (Team MM)'. The text 'arma sobai TMCP samarthak (We are all TMCP supporters )' appears above it.
Misra's most recent role in the TMCP was as one of the secretaries of its South Kolkata unit.
Trinankur Bhattacharya, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad president, said: 'He was once with Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. But now he is not. Whoever he may be, be it a party leader or not, he should be given exemplary punishment if found guilty. We condemn such incidents.'
Another student and TMCP member said:. 'He virtually ran the college and his diktats were to be followed by the students. From Saraswati Puja to symposiums to party programmes, he was at the helm of everything in the college.'
Misra is a resident of the Kalighat area. A Kalighat TMC leader said: 'We don't know how the party gave him space in the law college. He always tried to be close to local TMC councillors and MLAs.'
Misra's Facebook timeline appears to bear this out, with multiple photographs showing him with TMC leaders. There are also several photographs and posts related to the college.
His bio describes him as a lawyer with the Alipur police and sessions court and an organisational secretary of the South Kolkata TMCP.
Debanjan Dey, the state secretary of CPI(M) student wing SFI, said: 'Monojit Misra is a known criminal from Kalighat. Many cases are pending against him. Even after that, he was given a job in this college. Why did not take action against him?'
Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari posted on X: 'This incident is not just a crime, it is a blatant proof of the corruption of educational institutions by the leaders of the Trinamool Congress student wing. The Trinamool student leaders are repeatedly abusing their power to create an atmosphere of fear and anarchy in educational institutions.'
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, meanwhile, posted on X: 'Police to see that maximum punishment should be given. However we must be careful. Such boys sometimes come close to our party and then they will do their will and do shameful acts. The leaders with whom this boy has worked locally should be careful.'

‘If found guilty, he should get maximum punishment': Father of Monojit Mishra, prime accused in Kolkata rape case, speaks out
Two days after Monojit Mishra was arrested in the Kolkata law college rape case, his father is still coming to terms with the news that his son has been accused of raping and assaulting a 24-year-old student for hours. A priest from Kalighat, Mishra's father (name withheld on request) said he was ashamed after hearing the news. 'We stay in a 6 x 8 ft room. We worked so hard and rose from the lower strata of society to make him a lawyer. It is hard to believe that my son has done it,' he said, speaking to The Indian Express over the phone. 'He is my son. I worked very hard to make him a lawyer. But I must say, if the judiciary, after seeing all the evidence, finds him to be guilty, he should be given the toughest punishment, the maximum punishment. I will accept it with my head bowed,' he added. Mishra, 31, the prime accused in the rape case, is among the four accused arrested. The TMC has claimed that Mishra is no longer associated with the party. Asked if he would pursue the case for his son, Mishra's father said, 'I will not pursue the case or fight a legal battle. Frankly, I cannot afford it. It is a fact that as a father, one's duty is to do everything to see his son become something. What more can a father do? Then this happens.' Mishra's father said he and his son have been estranged for the last five years. 'We have not had any communication for the last five-six years. He is so busy. I live on my own money. Sometimes clients come enquiring about him, and I tell them this is not his chamber. Since this is his permanent address, his ATM cards and other things come. He collects it,' Mishra's father said. According to him, since school, Mishra had supported the TMC. 'Later, when he joined law college, he became a leader there. There was so much factionalism in the TMC in his college. There were cases and counter-cases…which is normal in college politics,' he added. STF cracks task-based cyber scam: Mastermind, 2 held from Bhopal; victims lured via Telegram, duped of lakhs
LUCKNOW: In a significant breakthrough against rising online financial fraud, the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh arrested three accused — including the mastermind — from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, for operating a sophisticated cyber scam. The scam lured unsuspecting victims through social media platforms by promising handsome returns on completing fake 'tasks.' The trio was arrested on Friday from Danish Nagar, Hoshangabad Road, under Bagh Sewaniya police station limits, in a joint operation with Amethi Police. Additional SP, STF, Vishal Vikram Singh, who led the probe, said that the arrests followed a months-long investigation into a rapidly growing trend of task-based scams proliferating across Telegram and Facebook. "Victims were invited to join private Telegram groups via fraudulent links, where they were enticed to complete small digital 'tasks' in exchange for inflated financial rewards. Initial earnings were credited into fake wallets to build trust — but as victims invested more, they were trapped in an endless cycle of deposits, losing lakhs in the process," he said. The arrested accused have been identified as Shivansh Mishra (22) — the alleged mastermind, son of Shailendra Prasad Mishra, a resident of Ganeshganj, Suhagpur, Shahdol (M.P.), and a B. Pharma student at Bhabha University, Bhopal. Ravi Singh (23) — son of Vinod Singh, also from Suhagpur, Shahdol, and a close childhood friend and classmate of Shivansh. Umashankar Tiwari (43) — maternal uncle of Shivansh, residing at South Tatya Tope Nagar, Bhopal. He played a key role in procuring bank accounts using real and forged documents. Police also seized three mobile phones used for scam coordination, 16 debit cards linked to fraudulent bank accounts, 15 cheque books, nine bank passbooks, and 359 screenshots of incriminating WhatsApp conversations related to cyber fraud. One PAN card, one driving licence, and one IGT Solutions employee ID card were also seized. One of the complainants, Ashish Vikram Singh from Amethi, filed an FIR (No. 13/24) at the Cyber Crime Police Station, detailing how he was targeted. Ashish received a Facebook link promoting a 'work-from-home reward scheme.' Upon clicking, he was added to a Telegram group where he was assigned digital tasks. After depositing ₹10,000, he received a small bonus of ₹2,512, giving the appearance of legitimacy. Encouraged, Ashish completed 28 rounds of 'tasks,' seeing increasing fake rewards in his digital wallet. At one point, a balance of ₹9.13 lakh appeared in the account, and he was promised he could withdraw it after completing a final task worth Rs 3.16 lakh. But when he attempted to withdraw, he was told to deposit additional 'security amounts' — first Rs 2.25 lakh, then Rs 3 lakh more, and finally Rs 6.3 lakh for "VIP access." Ultimately, he was defrauded of Rs 13 lakh. ASP Singh said that during interrogation, Shivansh confessed that he and Ravi were recruited during a brief stint at a Bhopal call centre operated by IGT Solutions. There, they met cyber fraud recruiters — Zubair Khan, Saif Khan, and most crucially, Anil and Amit Nayar — who ran a parallel racket involving rented bank accounts. For every new bank account with full access kits (ATM card, cheque book, SIM card, login credentials), Shivansh and the team were paid Rs 15,000 and a share in the illicit earnings. They created nearly 50 bank accounts over the last year, often using forged documents or by convincing acquaintances. These accounts served as the primary money mules through which fraudulent deposits were laundered and withdrawn. Umashankar Tiwari, Shivansh's uncle, admitted to arranging for bank accounts and delivering complete kits to his nephew, who passed them on to the Nayar brothers. Recognising a pattern in multiple such fraud complaints across Uttar Pradesh, STF cyber units were tasked by Additional Superintendent of Police Vishal Vikram Singh to intensify intelligence gathering. Based on digital footprint tracking, technical analysis, and confidential tip-offs, a coordinated STF team — in collaboration with Amethi Police — raided the gang's hideout in Bhopal and arrested the three accused. Police said that efforts are ongoing to apprehend Anil Nayar, Amit Nayar, and others involved in this widespread scam. Police suspect the gang has operated across at least 200 fake bank accounts in the past year, defrauding victims across states. ASP Singh said the case highlights the alarming evolution of cybercrime in India — no longer limited to phishing emails or tech support scams, but now mimicking professional reward systems, task apps, and digital wallets to dupe individuals with promises of quick money. The STF has urged citizens to remain cautious and verify any online reward-based scheme before investing time or money. The STF has appealed to potential victims of similar task frauds to come forward and file complaints as further investigation into this pan-India racket continues.
