Florida Panthers React to NHL's Historic Aleksander Barkov Announcement
When the Florida Panthers drafted center Aleksander Barkov No. 2 overall back in 2013, they envisioned him as the face of their franchise for years to come.

Barkov has more than lived up to those expectations, leading the Panthers to a Stanley Cup championship last year and back to the Final this year while making two NHL All-Star teams and winning two Frank J. Selke Trophies, given annually to 'the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game,' and a Lady Byng Trophy along the way, given to 'the player who best combines sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct, and high playing ability.'
Barkov added to his trophy case on Monday when the NHL announced that the Panthers' 29-year-old captain won his third Selke Trophy as well as his first King Clancy Memorial Trophy, given annually to 'the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.'

Barkov became the first player in NHL history to win both the Selke and King Clancy trophies in the same season, and he's just the fourth player to win both awards during his career.

The Panthers celebrated Barkov's notable achievements with a congratulatory social media post.
'Congrats, Cap! Barky won the Frank J. Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy 👏' the Panthers posted on X.
Barkov joined an exclusive group that includes Patrice Bergeron, Bob Gainey, Pavel Datsyuk, Jere Lehtinen, and Guy Carbonneau as the only players to win the Selke three or more times. Bergeron, a recently retired Boston Bruins legend, holds the record with six wins and Gainey is second with four wins.
The 6-foot-3 Finn scored 20 goals and 71 points this season, and he led the Panthers with 51 assists and 34 takeaways.

He also ranked fourth in the NHL in faceoff win percentage (56.5%) among centers with at least 1,000 faceoffs. It was the eighth straight season his faceoff percentage was above 50. Barkov also logged four shorthanded points this season, one shy of his career high.

Anything can happen. I think just going into anything, going into life, tryouts, growing up going to baseball: You get one tryout. You get one first impression. 'Just do your best. That's kind of all. I'm a big believer of everything happens for a reason, so I feel like if I put myself in the best position I can, it'll be good.' It was his energy and speed, however, that seemed to positively impact the Rangers the most. Gary Bettman faces all-important question after Canadian Five's acquittal
The CBA, extended last month for four years, grants the NHL commissioner essentially unfettered power regarding off-ice discipline. If the NHLPA had issues with Article 18-A, the union should have addressed its concerns during the recent kumbaya negotiations, which apparently never touched larger systemic issues off the ice. Now, the union's words ring hollow in advance of Gary Bettman's decision whether to readmit the Canadian Five to the NHL after Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were found not guilty on July 24 by Judge Maria Carroccia following their trial in Ontario, after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman in her London hotel room in June 2018 following a Hockey Canada event. In this case, not guilty does not equate to innocent. That is my opinion, just as it was the judge's opinion that the woman — known as E.M., whose identity is shielded by a publication ban — was not credible in her testimony. I am not an attorney and I am not conversant with Canadian law, but from the moment the judge refused to admit Brett Howden's texts into evidence, the verdict seemed inevitable. Alex Laferriere agrees to three-year, $12.3 million contract to stay with Kings
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Forward Alex Laferriere has agreed to a three-year, $12.3 million deal to stay with the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings announced the deal Saturday for Laferriere, who was a restricted free agent this summer after playing out his entry-level contract. The 23-year-old Laferriere had 19 goals and 23 assists last year for the Kings, emerging as a dependable scorer in only his second NHL season. He largely played on the right wing alongside center Quinton Byfield, another key member of Los Angeles' young core, and high-scoring Kevin Fiala. A third-round pick in the 2020 draft, Laferriere has 31 goals and 34 assists in 158 games for the Kings. New Los Angeles general manager Ken Holland has taken care of his most pressing summer contract issues after the signing of Laferriere, but Holland said last month that he would be eager to sign Adrian Kempe to a long-term deal as the Swedish forward heads into the final season of his current contract.
