Michelle Buteau talks saying goodbye to 'Survival of the Thickest' and her 'first true love' stand-up comedy

Buteau celebrates stand-up as a Gala star at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal
From her incredible success with the Netflix series Survival of the Thickest and history-making stand-up shows, including being the first woman to film a comedy special at Radio City Music Hall, Michelle Buteau is one of the most beloved talents in entertainment. So the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal is lucky to have her featured as a Gala star.
Whether she's acting, doing stand-up comedy, hosting, writing or producing a project, she excels at it all. But no matter how many hats she's worn in her career of more than 20 years, stand-up is her "first true love."
"I fell in love with stand-up and everything else is just cherries on the cake," Buteau told Yahoo Canada.
"When you get the Gala spot at JFL, it feels like you've won Formula One. ... When you start stand-up, there are a handful of things, especially New York comedians, always talk about getting. An SNL audition, or a Late Night spot, and JFL was right up there. So this is very exciting. I mean, it's been a long time, so very happy to be doing it."
As Buteau highlighted, there's nothing like experiencing the thrill of a live stand-up show. But through her comedy specials on streaming sites and leveraging online platforms, Buteau has really been able to make her work available to people around the world. It's that accessibility component that's important for her.
"There's a non-binary teenager in Kenya that's reaching out to me, a 62-year-old lesbian in Bulgaria, ... then there's cities in Brazil ... using my catchphrase," Buteau said. "It makes comedians feel like rock stars."
Michelle Buteau is 'tired' of people being told their 'not worthy'
With the success of Survival of the Thickest, the show has been praised for being particularly sex-positive, as the lead character Mavis (played by Buteau) works to thrive mentally, emotionally and sexually.
"When we talk about mental health and making people feel good, it isn't just about how you look. It's about how you feel. And it's about how you feel in all chapters of your life," Buteau said. "So whether it is a piece of clothing, whether it is food, whether it is attention, whether it is sex, all of it is meant to build you up, not tear you down."
"[I'm] sick and tired of the conversation, especially in and around the arts, film and TV, of bigger bodies always having to feel very grateful that someone finds them desirable, which is just plain bullshit. ... Since the beginning of time there has been thick people who have been loved on and dicked down. It's just like, excuse me, why is this such a wild concept that somebody would love their body? And honestly, it is what we are going through today and what we've been going through also since the beginning of time. It's control. It is a mental prison. If you tell people they are not worthy ... they're going to believe you, they're not going to feel good about themselves. And I'm so tired of that."
Buteau added that what's great about having Survival of the Thickest on Netflix, which is available in 190 countries, is how many people she can reach with the show's core messaging.
"I know that I can reach people of all gender expressions, of all sizes and shapes, and say, 'Hey boo, you look f—king good and you're worthy of whatever you want,'" she said. "That's why I made my character a stylist, because I think the platform of fashion can showcase the injustices. ... It's also a good excuse to be like, 'Hey, I need a lot of money for fashion.'"
While we already know that Season 3 of Survival of the Thickest will be the show's last, a tough hit for many fans, Buteau is ready to go out with impact.
"It feels earned and deserved," Buteau said. "I'm really lucky ... that I found something I love to do, and so I don't take the responsibility lightly. We're going to blow it up ... in the best possible way."
"I know people are bummed that it won't be coming back, but it's actually such a gift to know that it is the third and final. I don't think a lot of platforms and networks give you that information all the time."

Prince Harry And Meghan To Suffer 'Huge Loss Of Revenue' As $100M Netflix Deal Will Not Be Renewed

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's $100 million Netflix deal will not be renewed when it expires in September, reportedly ending on mutual and amicable terms. At the same time, Netflix gained significant viewership from its debut docuseries, but recent projects have underperformed. Meghan is now focused on expanding her lifestyle brand, As Ever, following the successful launch of her rosé. Despite the deal's end, Season 2 of "With Love, Meghan" is set to premiere this fall on Netflix. Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Netflix Deal Won't Be Renewed Harry and Meghan's multi-million-pound deal with Netflix is coming to a close, with reports suggesting the streaming giant will not renew the contract when it expires this September. Although no formal statement is expected from either party, insiders claim the decision to part ways was mutual. Behind the scenes, Netflix executives have quietly decided it's time to move on. The Sussexes originally signed a reported $100 million agreement with Netflix, leading to the successful launch of their documentary series, one of the platform's most talked-about releases. According to The Sun, a source close to the situation, "Netflix was clever in that they got a hell of a lot of viewers for the first documentary series, and knew, realistically, it would prove the zenith of content from the Montecito pair." Things definitely slowed down for the duo as one of Harry's latest projects, 'Polo,' reportedly drew just half a million viewers, failing to make a strong impact. Meanwhile, Meghan has been focusing on her new lifestyle brand, As Ever. "The deal is done; no more shows will be made. Netflix feel they've got all they can from the couple," the source said. "They're not unhappy with how things turned out — they got those initial hits, and produced one of the most talked-about shows of all time. The content got weaker from there on, but, frankly, for £20million a year, anything was better than nothing." Harry and Meghan's Netflix Exit Reportedly Amicable, But Will Be A Huge 'Loss Of Revenue' For The Royals While viewership has declined and the Sussexes' priorities have shifted, sources say the separation from Netflix is amicable. "There's no animosity from either side," the source said. "Things have just run their course. Netflix execs are well aware Meghan's priority now is her own brand, and they won't play second fiddle to that." "Publicly, there will not be a statement, and of course, if things change dramatically, they'd be open to a one-off project down the line," they added. Still, the end of the lucrative deal reportedly hits Harry harder, with the source noting that "it's a huge loss of revenue" for the couple. Could The Royal Couple Move To Paramount+? Despite the end of the contract, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly remains on friendly terms with the Duchess of Sussex. Meanwhile, streaming rival Paramount+ is reportedly interested in collaborating with the Montecito-based royals, especially after their partially successful deal with rival company Netflix. According to reports, the duke and duchess would consider new opportunities, provided the right concept comes along. It's also been revealed that Netflix signed a deal with King Charles and actor, Idris Elba for a documentary. As reported by The Sun, the deal with the British monarch may have faced a roadblock if the streaming giant had remained in business with Harry and Meghan by renewing their contract. Season 2 of 'With Love, Meghan' Set To Premiere on Netflix This Fall Despite End of $100M Deal Despite the $100 million deal ending, the curtain hasn't completely closed on Harry and Meghan's relationship with Netflix. A second season of Meghan's lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan" has already been filmed and is set to premiere on the platform this fall. Although a specific release date hasn't been announced, the Duchess of Sussex previously teased the upcoming season with an ASMR-inspired montage posted to Instagram. The video featured cozy scenes from the kitchen and behind-the-scenes moments from the upcoming episodes. "If you're loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up on Season 2!" Meghan wrote in the caption. "Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life! @netflix." Michael Steed is returning to direct the second season, with model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen announced as the first confirmed guest star. Meghan Markle Expands Lifestyle Brand, As Ever, Pauses Podcast To Focus On Growth Meanwhile, Meghan is reportedly doubling down on her lifestyle venture, As Ever, following the successful sell-out of her debut rosé wine. According to those close to her, the Duchess of Sussex is eager to expand the brand and is already preparing to launch a champagne line, along with a selection of holiday-themed products. "As a growing business, As ever is continuing to explore growth opportunities that feel aligned with the brand's core values and quality standards," a source shared, per Page Six. "The brand continues to evolve with new products that align with her vision for quality lifestyle goods at accessible price points." Last month, Meghan confirmed that she was taking a pause on her podcast focused on female founders, citing her desire to fully focus on the brand. She made the announcement during an appearance on Skims co-founder Emma Grede's Aspire podcast. Solve the daily Crossword

What happened to Amy Bradley? Netflix documentary raises questions that internet sleuths are scrambling to answer.

'Amy Bradley is Missing' is one of the most-watched documentaries on Netflix right now. But the case is not new to true crime fans. In the opening scene of the Netflix documentary, Amy Bradley is Missing, several interviewees share their suspicions about what happened to the 23-year-old woman who went missing while traveling with her family on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 1998. 'Somebody killed her,' one person suggests. Another says, 'I think she jumped or fell off,' while a third posits, 'I think she got taken as a sex slave. But I don't know that.' Bradley's unsolved disappearance has long been the subject of such theories. At around 3:40 a.m. on March 24, 1998, Bradley returned to her family's cruise cabin after dancing in the ship's club space. Her dad, Ron, said he woke up briefly around 5:30 a.m. and saw her out on the deck, but when he woke up again at 6 a.m., she was gone. A four-day search of the ship and the surrounding waters turned up no trace of Bradley. The three-part Netflix series, which came out on July 16, doesn't have concrete answers, but it does explore several theories that police pursued as well as others that true crime fans and internet sleuths have clung to about what happened that morning. Theories presented in the docuseries One of the first theories police investigated was that Bradley had either fallen overboard or taken her own life by jumping off the deck. But Bradley's family has never supported either theory, maintaining instead that they believe she is still alive. But Victor McCollum, an FBI agent who was on the case, says in the documentary that right after Bradley went missing, there was 'no direct evidence she jumped.' Other authorities who were interviewed added that, because of the ship's location and other conditions in the water surrounding it in the early morning hours of March 24, if Bradley had jumped, they would've found something. 'Because of the position of the boat, wind force, sea current, the wave height — the body would have washed up,' Henry Vrutaal, a Curaçao coast guard officer, says in the documentary. 'But she was nowhere to be found. Not even a piece of clothing, nothing.' Another theory emerged when Chris Fenwick, a video editor who was on the ship, found the last known footage of Bradley, which shows her dancing with one of the cruise ship's band members, Alister Douglas, commonly referred to by his nickname 'Yellow.' Another passenger, Lori Thompson, said she and a friend were sitting on the deck 'sometime between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.' on March 24 when they saw Bradley and Douglas in a glass elevator together. Thompson said that about 15 minutes later, the friends saw Douglas walk across the deck alone. 'I kinda got a bad vibe,' Thompson says in the series. 'Immediately, I thought, 'Where's Amy?'' FBI agents say that Douglas was interviewed, and he had 'vehemently denied' walking around with Bradley in the early morning hours on the ship. He passed a polygraph test, and no charges were ever filed against him. Douglas, who was not interviewed for the Netflix series, spoke about the case in an interview with the 'True Crime This Week' podcast in October 2024. 'About five minutes to 1 a.m., I said [to Bradley], 'Look, I have to go, I've got to get out of [the] passenger area.' And I left,' Douglas said on the podcast. 'That was my last conversation, last time I saw her.' In the aftermath of her disappearance, some people have claimed that they've seen Bradley in Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island where the cruise ship was about to dock when she went missing, fueling theories that she was kidnapped or sold into sex trafficking. At the end of the first episode, David Carmichael, a Canadian scuba diver, says that he saw Bradley with two men on Curaçao in August 1998, but he did not know she was a missing person at the time. However, authorities have not confirmed any reported Bradley sightings since her disappearance. The FBI has also stated that there is no evidence that Bradley was kidnapped by someone who was on board the cruise ship, and they have not arrested or detained any of the passengers in relation to her case. Internet sleuths have been trying to solve this case for years The Netflix documentary may be bringing Bradley's case to a new audience, but internet sleuths, who are people who use online resources to investigate mysteries and crimes, have been digging into her disappearance for years. These amateur investigators tend to meet in designated Reddit threads, Facebook groups and other online forums. While internet sleuths have had some success (online sleuths were credited with helping identify people who were involved in the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021), there are many cases where they made inaccurate and potentially harmful accusations. The most popular theories within these communities align with what is discussed in the Netflix series: that Bradley either fell overboard or was kidnapped and could still be alive. So far, though, neither internet sleuths nor professional investigators have been able to figure out what happened to Bradley. Solve the daily Crossword

Hulk Hogan was filming Netflix docuseries at the time of his death

Hulk Hogan was in the midst of filming a documentary project for Netflix at the time of his death, CNN has learned. The wrestling legend died earlier this week, at the age of 71. The previously unannounced project, made in partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), is intended to chronicle the wrestling legend's storied life and career, on and off screen, and will still be released after Hogan's sudden passing, according to sources associated with the project. Filming remains ongoing. One source close to the untitled documentary said that the project has been in the works since 2024. Over 20 hours of unseen sit-down interviews with Hogan have already been completed, and an additional 30 hours of scenes have already been shot. The documentary was being produced with Hogan's full participation. 'People will see a side of him they haven't seen before,' the source told CNN. No release date has been set thus far, and Hogan's unexpected death will require filmmakers to re-tool portions of the documentary. Cameras will be on the ground at WWE Smackdown on Friday evening to capture a planned tribute to Hogan, according to the source. Born Terry Bollea and better known as Hulk Hogan, the professional wrestler was widely recognized as the biggest wrestling star of all time, helping catapult WWE into the massive success it is today. He died on Thursday from cardiac arrest, according to officials. Police and fire personnel in Clearwater, Florida, said in a news conference that there were no signs of suspicious activity or foul play in his death and that a standard investigation is ongoing. Hogan is credited with turning the sport of wrestling into an entertainment powerhouse. His larger-than-life presence in the 1980s and 1990s propelled him to become a household name and global superstar, creating the blueprint for other wrestlers – like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and John Cena – to parlay their fame in the ring over to Hollywood and into movies, television shows and reality TV. The Netflix documentary project is being directed by Bryan Storkel and will be produced by Connor Schell's studio, Words + Pictures, in collaboration with WWE. The Hogan doc was first reported by Puck. Netflix declined to provide further details on the documentary at this time.
