Colin Cowherd pushes Nick Saban – Archie Manning conspiracy theory involving Cleveland Browns
Colin Cowherd proposed a Nick Saban-Archie Manning conspiracy theory involving the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland is still in one of its best eras of this century, with head coach Kevin Stefanski at the helm of the franchise. The Browns have made the playoffs in two of the past five seasons, including winning their first postseason game since 1994. Last year's team, however, did struggle, going 3-14 overall, leading some to question Kevin Stefanski's job security.
And it's not going to be easy to recover from 2024 in a loaded AFC North division. The quarterback situation for the Browns has dominated the headlines with Deshaun Watson likely out for the season with a torn Achilles. To be honest, the three-time Pro Bowler was largely dismal for Cleveland when he was healthy, but regardless, there is a vacancy at QB1 for this current roster. Four quarterbacks are battling over this starting position: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. While there is a chance the long-term solution under center for this franchise is one of those players, Colin Cowherd floated a theory on The Herd that the Browns might have a master plan, should things fall apart in 2025.
'This is the worst kept secret in the South. Haslam, Jimmy, owner of the Browns, huge SEC Tennessee booster, leans heavily on the Manning family. Very close to the Manning family. Yes, that's not make believe. Arch Manning is part of the Manning family. And this is where Nick Saban comes in. Saban is incredibly close to not only Jimmy Haslam, but Saban's close to the Manning family as well.
And so Saban, if he could land, I'm told, a top quarterback like Harbaugh going to the Chargers for Herbert, he would take a phone call for the NFL. And there are two teams guaranteed to be awful this year in the NFL. Cleveland and the Saints. Nick Saban has coached in Cleveland with the Browns under the Belichick staff and he coached at LSU. This is not a conspiracy theory.'
Arch Manning has yet to have a full season as a starter in college, and it's unclear whether he would declare for the draft after 2025 anyway. Still, even with a lot of the unknown, the former 5-star QB is projected to be a potential top prospect in the 2026 draft. These two moves would certainly shock the world, but wouldn't exactly be beyond the pale for owner Jimmy Haslam. Cowherd's comments, overall, definitely add some extra pressure on Stefanski, who seems to be in dire need of a bounce-back season if he wants to stay with the Browns. Even though Nick Saban's return to the coaching ranks, especially in the NFL, still looks pretty far-fetched.

Bills WR Shavers carted off with ankle injury; LB Bernard, WR Samuel sidelined with hamstring issues
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills backup receiver Tyrell Shavers was carted off the field at training camp after hurting his right ankle on what proved to be the final play of practice Sunday. Shavers made a catch in the end zone and fell awkwardly while attempting to protect the ball from rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston. Shavers was on the ground for several minutes while being tended to by the training staff, leading to coach Sean McDermott ending practice a few minutes earlier than scheduled. The 25-year-old Shavers signed with Buffalo as an undrafted rookie free agent two years ago, and appeared in three games with the Bills last season. Also, starting linebacker Terrel Bernard and starting receiver Curtis Samuel did not practice Sunday with both dealing with hamstring injuries. The team had no update on the severity of the injuries, with McDermott scheduled to address reporters on Monday. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

49ers activate Ricky Pearsall from PUP list and Brock Purdy returns to practice
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers activated second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall from the physically unable to perform list and he practiced for the first time this summer. Niners quarterback Brock Purdy was also back at practice Sunday after missing a session on Friday for personal reasons. Pearsall had been out since injuring his hamstring during the offseason program. The Niners are counting on a big season from the 2024 first-round pick after trading away Deebo Samuel and with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss the start of the season recovering from knee surgery. Pearsall had a difficult rookie season, missing almost all of camp with injuries to his hamstring and shoulder and then sitting out the first half of the season after being shot in a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Pearsall returned in Week 7 and finished the season with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. Pearsall had a strong finish to the season with 14 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the final two games. ___ AP NFL:

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time. Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field. Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons. After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday. 'We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. 'But all three are kind of competing there.' Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season. 'He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,' Reid said. 'He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.' Meanwhile, Reid said cornerback Kristian Fulton had a procedure to 'clean out' his knee in the spring, which is why he remains on the physically unable to perform list. The Chiefs gave him a two-year, $20 million deal in March. Rookie tight end Jake Briningstool also did not practice Sunday because of a hamstring injury. ___ AP NFL:
