Turkey's state energy company TPAO is joining a major natural gas field off Azerbaijan as a partner, in a deal that will mark a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Monday.
The gas production-sharing agreement will be signed between TPAO, Azerbaijan's SOCAR and British energy giant BP on Tuesday and covers the Shafag-Asiman offshore block in the Caspian Sea, Bayraktar told the Baku Energy Week conference.
He described the partnership between Turkey and Azerbaijan as a 'strategic energy alliance built on deep-rooted history, shared culture and a common vision' and said the new deal would enhance joint production in Azerbaijan.
The Shafag-Asiman offshore block has long been viewed as a promising site for hydrocarbon exploration. It is 125 kilometres (78 miles) southeast of Baku and at a depth of 650-800 metres, according to SOCAR's website. The first exploration well was drilled in 2020.
'Hopefully, we will finalize the agreement here. We have acquired a 30 percent stake. Our partners are SOCAR and BP. We hope to begin production at this field,' Bayraktar told reporters on the sidelines of the conference.
In a message sent to the opening ceremony of the event, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to deepening energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, calling their joint projects a key to regional and European energy security.
Erdogan praised the enduring partnership between Ankara and Baku, which he said has been crowned with joint infrastructure projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC), Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines, and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).
'Our collaboration not only benefits Turkey and Azerbaijan but also continues to make significant contributions to the energy security of the region and Europe,' said thepresident.
On the sidelines of the event, Bayraktar held a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which he described as productive, focusing on expanding cooperation across various energy domains.
'TPAO's presence in Azerbaijan is growing.
We're also discussing collaboration on additional fields and will continue to ramp up our activity in the Caspian Sea,' he said.
Bayraktar echoed Erdoğan's view that Turkish-Azerbaijani energy projects contribute to Europe's energy security.
'In the coming period, we anticipate new developments regarding projects that aim to deliver gas to Europe from alternative and additional sources,' he said.
He also highlighted Azerbaijan's increasing investments in renewables and revealed plans for cross-border clean energy infrastructure.
'In the period ahead, we will develop projects for generating renewable energy in Nakhchivan and transporting it to Turkey, and through Turkey on to Europe,' he added.
The remarks come at a time of rising global energy uncertainty driven by geopolitical conflicts, aging infrastructure and market volatility.

Another opposition leader jailed in Georgia amid deepening crackdown

A court in Georgia has sentenced prominent opposition figure Nika Gvaramia to eight months in prison, amid a deepening crackdown on critics of the ruling Georgian Dream party. Gvaramia, the co-leader of the opposition Akhali party, was also barred from holding office for two years. The court imposed the sentence on Tuesday over his refusal to cooperate with a parliamentary commission tasked with investigating alleged wrongdoing under ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili, a pro-Western reformer currently serving a 12-and-a-half-year prison term. Several other leading opponents of Georgian Dream have been jailed on similar charges to Gvaramia, including Giorgi Vashadze, a former deputy justice minister, who received a seven-month prison sentence last week. The crackdown has led to growing accusations against the governing party that it is trampling on democracy amid continuing protests in the wake of last year's disputed elections. Speaking to the AFP news agency on Tuesday, Gvaramia's lawyer Dito Sadzaglishvili said the verdict against his client was 'unlawful' and 'part of the government's attempt to crush all dissent in Georgia'. Growing criticism The British government on Monday denounced the crackdown on opposition figures and summoned the country's charge d'affaires. 'The imprisonment of prominent opposition leaders is the latest attempt by the Georgian government to crack down on freedoms and stifle dissent,' the United Kingdom's Foreign Office said. 'The UK Government will not hesitate to consider further action should Georgia not return to respecting and upholding democracy, freedoms and human rights,' it added. The NGO Amnesty International also criticised the government, saying last week in reaction to Vashadze's sentencing that it had 'serious concerns over the misuse of legislative, policing and other powers to silence government critics in Georgia'. The human rights organisation specifically took aim at the parliamentary commission linked to the arrests of opposition figures. 'With its status disputed, the commission has been instrumentalised to target former public officials for their principled opposition,' said Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty's deputy director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. After Georgian Dream claimed victory in a contested election in October, the European Union candidate nation experienced mass protests. Critics accuse the government of undermining democracy and of bringing the country close to Moscow, allegations the governing party denies. The EU has said some 80 percent of the population supports Georgia's bid to join the bloc, a commitment enshrined in its constitution. Amid allegations of democratic backsliding, the United States and several European countries have sanctioned some Georgian government officials.

Qatar Sports Investments marks 14 years of transformative ownership of Paris Saint-Germain

Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) on Monday marked the 14th anniversary of its acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), celebrating a period of extraordinary transformation, growth, and sporting excellence that reached its greatest milestone yet with the Club's historic UEFA Champions League 2025 triumph just weeks ago. On Saturday (May 31), PSG claimed the most prestigious title in European club football, defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in a commanding performance in Munich. This landmark victory - the Club's first UEFA Champions League title - ended a historic 2024–2025 season in which PSG won four major trophies: the Trophée des Champions (1-0 vs AS Monaco on January 5th at Stadium 974 in Doha), Ligue 1, which the Club won by a dominant 19-point margin, the Coupe de France (3-0 vs Reims on May 24th at the Stade de France), and finally, the Champions League itself. This season firmly established PSG among the giants of world football and marked one of the most successful campaigns in the Club's history. Since QSI's investment in 2011, PSG has won an unprecedented 37 trophies, become a global force across men's, women's, and youth football, and evolved into a cultural and commercial icon beyond the sport itself. Other key achievements include: • Top-3 revenues in world football of €806 million (up from €101 million in 2011). • The Club has contributed over €3 billion to French public finances since 2011. • State of the art +€350 million training centre in Poissy, focus on developing local Parisian talent. • 191 PSG Academies in 21 different countries. • 228 million followers on social media (up from 600 thousand in 2011). The Club continues its pursuit of greatness in the US this month, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup following their 4-0 defeat of Inter Miami on Sunday.

UK-US deal for lower car and aerospace duties takes effect

Agencies A trade deal cutting tariffs on British exports of automobiles and aerospace equipment to the United States takes effect Monday, as the two sides continue to negotiate over steel duties. 'From today, British car and aerospace manufacturers will benefit from major tariff reductions when exporting to the US, saving thousands of jobs,' the UK Department of Trade said in a statement Monday. London and Washington reached an agreement in May to cut US tariffs on cars from 27.5 percent to 10 percent, with a limit of 100,000 vehicles a year. It also fully eliminated a 10-percent tariff on goods such as engines and aircraft parts. 'Our historic trade deal with the United States delivers for British businesses and protects UK jobs,' Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in the same statement. 'From today, our world-class automotive and aerospace industries will see tariffs slashed, safeguarding key industries that are vital to our economy.' In return, Britain agreed to further open its market to US ethanol and beef. That has raised concerns in the chemical industry and among British farmers, even though the meat would still have to meet UK food safety standards. London is still negotiating for lower tariffs for its steel and aluminum exports to the United States, which has raised its levies to 25 percent. 'We will continue go further and make progress towards zero percent tariffs on core steel products,' the trade department said in the statement. Meanwhile, China will maintain duties on certain steel products from the European Union, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Indonesia, its commerce ministry said Monday, as overcapacity concerns drive global trade turbulence. The duties on stainless steel billets and hot-rolled plates, first levied by Beijing in 2019, range from 20.2 percent for Indonesian imports to 43 percent for those from the EU. China's commerce ministry said that an internal investigation found the potential termination of the anti-dumping duties could still cause 'damage' to the domestic stainless steel industry. Authorities will therefore continue to impose duties on products from the three countries and the European bloc 'for a period of five years starting from July 1', the ministry said in a statement. China, the world's largest steel producer, first took the measures in response to tariffs imposed on it by the United States during Donald Trump's first presidential term. The US tariffs were motivated by fears in Washington and among its allies that unfair industrial policies in China had led to a global glut of cheap exports, threatening to undercut local producers. Since returning to office in January, Trump has sent the world economy into a tailspin with a tariff blitz that has hit Chinese exports particularly hard. Trade tensions between the world's top two economies remain high despite China and the United States reaching a temporary truce to the tariff war.
