Tuticorin to get three defence, space tech investments worth more than 5,600cr
Sources in the state govt said the biggest project involves Sakthi Group, which will set up a manufacturing-cum-proof testing facility for ammunition and propellants in Tuticorin with a committed investment of 5,000 crore. This project will employ around 2,000 people.
"Establishment of this facility will augment the defence sector production in Tuticorin district," said a govt source. The second project is from Ethereal Exploration Guild, a space tech startup which will be setting up a manufacturing and testing facility for medium lift rocket engine in Tuticorin.

The project will involve an investment of 519 crore and an employment commitment of around 582 jobs.
The third project is also from a startup. Agnikul Cosmos will invest 121 crore with a projection of creating 525 jobs. The company will establsish a facility for manufacturing and testing of rocket launch vehicles for satellites in Tuticorin. Sources said these three big investments will help establish Tuticorin's credentials as TN's space tech cluster.

In its recently released space tech policy, the state govt had set a target of attracting 10,000 crore investment in the space sector in the next five years and create direct and indirect employment for nearly 10,000 people.
The state is also working towards creating a skilled talent pool for the space sector in the next five years.
Given that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is setting up India's second spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, Tuticorin is ideally placed to become a defence and space tech hub.

Abhishek urges unity within party, attacks BJP during TMC meet
1 2 Kolkata: A day after being appointed Trinamool's leader in Lok Sabha, party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee launched a scathing attack on BJP during a virtual meeting with nearly 9,000 party functionaries on Tuesday. Amid preparations for the 2026 assembly elections, Banerjee underscored the need for discipline and accountability within the party. He warned against infighting and favouritism within party ranks, saying, "Everyone is a soldier of Mamata Banerjee ." He instructed booth-level party workers to conduct voter list verifications and report irregularities by Aug 31. HC seeks to know TN's stand on quota for trans persons
Chennai: While commending Tamil Nadu govt's Policy For Transgender Persons, 2025, and calling it a significant step forward for the community, Madras high court said the govt's stand on granting horizontal reservation for the community in education and jobs remained unclear. "It is not clear as to whether the govt wants to provide horizontal reservation, which has been the request of the community and which has been reflected in many of the earlier orders passed by various courts, including a division bench of this court," said Justice N Anand Venkatesh on Tuesday. Hence, the state is directed to take a decision in this regard so that the community need not knock on the doors of this court every time and seek the reservation, the court added. Besides the horizontal reservation, the other issue requiring immediate consideration pertains to the district-level and state-level committees to monitor and review the progress in the implementation of the policy, the court said. "Hence, the state must issue necessary directions to the registrars about the legal sanction of these marriages," he added. Another suggestion for the govt was regarding the deed of familial association or other types of domestic partnership/civil union which the parties may enter to govern their rights. This issue has significance since none of the Succession Acts recognises such rights, and therefore, the parties must be able to at least deal with their rights by entering into such agreements, the court said. The court further recorded the submission of the govt that insofar as the policy for LGBTQIA+, the same is under process and some time is required to finalize it. Now that the govt has come out with a policy for transgender and intersex persons, it is time that it comes up with a policy for LGBTQIA+ people also. This process should be expedited, the court said.
